Community Breakfast with Professor Rivka Yahav

Dear Friends,

You're cordially invited to join us for a special breakfast gathering at Temple Shir Tikva on Wednesday, April 15, at 8:30 am with PROFESSOR RIVKA YAHAV of Haifa University and her husband, Haifa Mayor Yona Yahav.

Professor Yahav is Head of the Interdisciplinary Center and Head of Postgraduate Psychotherapy Studies at the University of Haifa's Dept. of Social Welfare and Health Sciences. But her elaborate c.v. doesn't begin to do her justice. The University of Haifa is an extraordinary institution that has an enormous impact on Israel's most pluralistic city, and on the entire country. She'll be coming to Boston on an official visit via the Boston-Haifa Connection with her husband, Haifa's Mayor Yona Yahav.

We hope you'll join us for breakfast and conversation with a woman who has enormous insight on the great changes that are taking place in Israel today.

There is no charge for this breakfast. Please RSVP to Karen Edwards at kedwards@shirtikva.org or 508-358-9992 no later than Friday, April 10.  We look forward to sharing a special morning with you!

Sisterhood Book Group

Thursday, April 30, 2015; 7- 8:30 p.m.

In the Courtyard of the Kabbalist

For the third Sisterhood Book Group gathering of this programming year, we will be reading In the Courtyard of the Kabbalist by Ruchama King Feuerman. "An eczema-riddled, middle-aged former Lower East Side haberdasher, Isaac Markowitz, moves to Israel where he becomes, much to his own surprise, the assistant to a famous old rabbi who daily dispenses wisdom (and soup) to the collection of seekers gathered in his courtyard.

It is there that he meets Tamar, a young American woman on a mission to live a spiritual life with a spiritual man, and who sees Isaac as that man long before he sees himself that way. Into both of their lives comes Mustafa, a devout Muslim, deformed at birth, unloved by his own mother, a janitor who works on Temple Mount, holy to Muslims and Jews."

To find out what happens, read the book and join us for dessert and an engaging discussion (even if you haven't finished the book). For more information, contact tstsisterhood @shirtikva.org.

Reyim Goes to the Theater

Saturday, April 25, 8 p.m., Regent Theatre, 7 Medford Street, Arlington.

Join our Reyim group for a performance of "Old Jews Telling Jokes"

If the title doesn't tell you enough, here's a description of what's in store.

"Old Jews Telling Jokes is inspired by the website OldJewsTellingJokes.com, and features both brand new and satisfyingly old songs and jokes. If you've ever had a mother, visited a doctor, or walked into a bar with a priest, a rabbi and a frog, Old Jews Telling Jokes will sit in the dark, give you a second opinion, and ask you where you got that."

Tickets are $49 each and can be ordered through at www.shirtikva.org/reyim

We know this is short notice but we must have a final count by Tuesday, April 7th. We are holding 30 seats so act now!

If you would like to meet for dinner before the show, we can gather at TRYST, 689 Mass. Ave. in Arlington (very close to the theater) at 5:45PM. Dinner is at your own expense. Please let us know if you are joining us for dinner so we can reserve seating at the restaurant.

This should be a really fun evening!

Andrea Berlin: Revolt! Why the Jews Took on Rome

Sunday, April 12, 2015, 9:00 a.m.

The Adult Learning Committee Presents:

Prof. Andrea Berlin, James R. Wiseman Chair in Classical Archeology, Boston University

Revolt! Why the Jews Took on Rome.

What is the real story behind the animosities that eventually led to the catastrophe of the Jewish Revolt against Rome? Why would a small population without military capabilities or political allies dare to challenge a ruling power of such might? New archaeological evidence reveals a growing cultural divide beginning about two generations before the Revolt broke out, and sheds new light on the prehistory of this explosive event.

Join us for this spellbinding piece of history, from an expert in the field.

Please contact Marcus Cohn, Chair with any questions at mecpc1@gmail.com".

From Victim to Survivor:
The Significance of Life Experiences After the Holocaust

Sunday May 10, 2015, 9 a.m.

The Israel Connections Committee presents:

Dr Anna Ornstein, Professor of Child Psychiatry, Harvard University

Join us for a wonderful opportunity to hear Dr. Ornstein and discuss the current relevance of the SHOAH. Dr. Anna Ornstein is an Auschwitz survivor, a Professor of Child Psychiatry at Harvard University, and Professor Emerita of Child Psychiatry at the University of Cincinnati. She lives in Brookline, Massachusetts. She presented accounts of her concentration camp experiences at yearly seders and collected them into a book "My Mother's Eyes."(2012) Dr. Orenstein's brilliant psychoanalytic mind, her extraordinary history, and her clinical experience have led to her unique contributions to psychoanalysis.  She has published over 90 articles and received many awards including the Special Presidential Commendation by the American Psychiatric Assn.

Dr. Ornstein, noting her very good and productive life, writes "Appreciating life, all the little joys, when you've experience the total loss of everything, you realize how little everything else matters." Now she asks the questions: What have we learned from the Holocaust? How do we prevent recurrences of these genocidal tragedies?
