Machzor Feedback Needed

We Want Your Feedback!

With the melodies of the High Holidays still fresh in our mind, the Rabbis, Cantor and Ritual Committee would like your feedback. As you know, we piloted segments of the draft edition of the new Reform Movement Machzor during the Erev Rosh Hashanah and Ne'ilah services.

We would love to hear your perspective about any of the aspects of the book that caught your attention. Tell us your thoughts about the layouts, translations, readings, and transliterations. Let us know what you liked and what missed the mark. Your feedback will help inform us as we vet this new Machzor as a potential replacement for the existing ones.

Click here and let us know what you think.

Breakfast with Dr. Eilon Schwartz

Thursday, October 23 8:00-9:00 a.m.

NEW CONVERSATIONS ABOUT ISRAELI SOCIETY

Please join us for breakfast to meet a very special Israeli activist and teacher, Dr. Eilon Schwartz.

Eilon is the director of a new kind of Israeli organization called SHAHARIT. At this turbulent time in Israeli society, Shaharit ("dawn") is challenging conventional wisdom by building conversations between all sorts of estranged communities - Left and Right; Ultra-Orthodox, Orthodox, Reform, and secular; Jews and Arabs - to create new sorts of social contracts and political networks.

Click here for more information about Dr. Elion Schwartz

Join us for breakfast and a special opportunity to have a dialogue about Israel in all of its complicated beauty. There is no cost for this breakfast and it is not a fundraiser.

To RSVP, please contact Karen Edwards (kedwards@shirtikva.org) in the Shir Tikva office no later than Sunday, October 19.

Reyim Goes to the Theater

November 16, 3 p.m., SpeakEasy Stage, Tremont Street, Boston

Join us for a performance of BAD JEWS

It is the story of two cousins waging war over a coveted family heirloom in this biting comedy about religion and culture. At odds are the annoyingly devout Daphna Feygenbaum, a young woman who wears her Jewishness like a righteous badge of honor, and her equally self-centered cousin Liam Haber, an entitled young man who has spent much of his life distancing himself from his cultural traditions. Though a comedy, BAD JEWS seriously explores issues of religion, cultural history, and personal identity. Following the performance there will be a discussion of the play.

ALEX CICELSKY is a remarkable teacher of Jewish ecological traditions. He is a senior staff member and founder of the Center for Creative Ecology (CfCE) and a founder of Kibbutz Lotan.

Founded in 1983 by graduates of the Reform Youth Movement of America, Kibbutz Lotan is an extraordinary place: one of Israel's two Reform kibbutzim.  Located in the Southern Arava desert, their community's mission is to live Jewishly, equitably, and in an environmentally sustainable way. Besides the environmental research work they do and the innovative practices they have put into place, their CCfCE runs a myriad of educational programs for post high school, college and post graduate students. They also run programs for American, Israeli and international youth groups and international (including Palestinian) visitors of all ages who come to experience the community and to learn firsthand about the kibbutz's sustainable building techniques, recycling, organic farming, water recycling and waste management, permaculture and philosophy of eco-village living.

His teaching throughout the weekend will be an invigorating and eye-opening exploration of the TORAH OF THE EARTH for adults & kids alike. Join us!

Facilitated by Dr. Max Klau, Powered by You

Connect monthly with other parents of teens in a gathering designed to explore the blessings and challenges of parenting.  This will NOT be a lecture or training experience, in which participants passively receive knowledge or skills from an "expert". Rather, it will be a space for reflection and discussion in which parents can explore their parenting challenges with fellow congregants in a space devoted to learning (not to problem solving).

To learn more, talk with facilitator, Dr. Max Klau - Shir Tikva congregant and chair of our AISH committee - on two conference call options:

11:00-11:30 a.m. on Tues, Oct. 7

1:00-1:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 17

Call in #: 605-475-6720

Lifelong Learning Opportunity

Lifelong Learning Opportunity for Members of Temple Shir Tikva

Lifelong Learners: An Independent Collaborative (LLAIC) started offering and classes in September, 2014, at Temple Beth Elohim in Wellesley. Because of the interest in this program, and space limitations in Wellesley, we have started to offer extra-curricular learning activities on Tuesdays at Temple Shir Tikva in Wayland. Members of Temple Shir Tikva can become LLAIC members and attend any extra-curricular activities offered at both temples, and the standard $35 semester membership fee will be waived.

To learn more about LLAIC, you can visit our website at www.llaic.org. If you have additional questions, you can call Richard Mansfield, Chair of LLAIC's Board, at 978 443 9668.
