Dear Library Member,
While the summer may sadly be coming to an end, the Library is gearing up for a busy fall, with plenty of new programs and special events, as well as the continuation of many popular classes. (Please note the Library will be closed on Labor Day.)
Tired of paying for TV channels you never watch? Learn about the many other ways to watch your favorite shows and movies without cable television at our program, "Cable TV Alternatives" on Fri. Sept. 9th at 2pm.
This week's Friday film will be the 2106 release, Race, starring Stephen James and Jason Sudeikis, which will be shown at 1:30pm. The movie focuses on Jesse Owens's quest to become the greatest track & field athlete in history, launching him onto the world stage of the 1936 Olympics, where he faces off against Adolf Hitler's vision of Aryan supremacy. The film is rated PG-13.
On Saturday, The Garden State Speculative Fiction Writers group, a non-profit, multi-genre writers group catering to the needs of writers from all walks of life, will meet at 11:30am. Everyone is welcome to join them at their monthly meetings for writing workshops, critique groups, informative guest speakers, contests and much more. This month, the Special Guest Speaker is Ellen Datlow, a science fiction, fantasy, and short fiction editor for over 35 years and the winner of multiple World Fantasy, Hugo, Stoker, and Locus Awards. Don't miss this great opportunity to meet with this accomplished author.
The week wraps up with our popular Second Saturday Concert Series with an appearance by The Hub Kings jazz band at 2:30pm. Influenced by many of the great soul jazz performers from the 60s & 70s, the Hub Kings will perform music from such legends as George Benson and Grover Washington, Jr. Based in Metuchen, the three-piece band centers on the smoky tones of the Hammond organ, whose sound once dominated urban centers like New Brunswick and Newark. The band consists of musicians Jonathan Tristram (keyboards/
Hammond Organ); Kevin Hildebrandt (guitar) and Dave Smela (drums.)
All Second Saturday concerts are free, but attendees are asked to bring a non-perishable item for donation to the Old Bridge Food Pantry.
Have a wonderful Labor Day and a spectacular week. See you in the Library!
Regards,
