RICHMOND BETTER AT HOME
New Services Will Help Seniors Remain Independent Longer
It's been a busy year for our Seniors Community Support Services department! It seems like just yesterday that they were rolling out the new Community Action Ambassadors program and already they're getting ready to launch a new initiative - Richmond Better at Home

Two Better at Home services - Transportation and Friendly Visiting - will be added to our long list of senior services this September. Funded by the Government of British Columbia and managed by the United Way of the Lower Mainland, the Better at Home program will help to reduce isolation, enhance mobility, and support independence among B.C.'s culturally diverse seniors population.

Though service delivery begins in September, seniors can register for Richmond Better at Home services today. To be eligible for the services, clients must be 65 or older and reside in Richmond. For details, please call 604-279-7021 or visit: Richmond Better at Home.
Volunteer! Drivers and Friendly Visitors Needed
Our message is simple: the more volunteers we have for Better at Home, the more clients we'll be able to help. Read on to find out how you can make a difference in a senior's life. Together, let's create a more caring community for seniors.
Friendly Visitors
Our volunteer visitors help ensure that seniors living alone don't have to feel alone. Whether a client wants to watch a movie, play a game, or simply have a conversation over tea, our visitors will be there to offer a listening ear and a friendly face. All visits take place at the client's home. If you are a social butterfly then you'll definitely want to take a look at the volunteer job description!
Volunteer Drivers
Many seniors are stuck at home and disconnected from the community due to a simple lack of transportation. Our drivers reduce senior isolation by transporting clients to and from medical appointments, recreational activities, community events, and more. If you want to be a helping hand on wheels, check out the volunteer job description here!
Youth Now Applications are Due August 30!
Youth are the leaders of today, and that's certainly the case in our Youth Now program. Youth Now is designed to harness the leadership potential found in our community by training young adults to serve as board members for local non-profit organizations. The program is open to high school graduates under the age of 26 who live, work, or study in Richmond.

The seven-month program gives youth the chance to become a non-profit director while attending monthly seminars on topics ranging from media relations to fund development to strategic planning. If you are a young leader who wants to make a difference in your community while learning valuable leadership skills, send in your application today
Volunteer Management Training Series
Volunteers make the world go 'round - but it takes a good volunteer manager to make volunteering possible. Our Volunteer Management Training Series (affectionately referred to as "VMTS") is a six-part introductory course ideal for new managers of volunteers. Participants will learn how to run a successful volunteer program for their non-profit organization. The next VMTS starts in September. Visit our Workshop Registration Centre for more details.

Community Idol is Looking for a Star!

Your community makes you who you are - and now your community can make you famous! Canada's Community Foundations are launching Community Idol, a national talent search to find people with a passion for their community and a personality for the spotlight. Contest winners will be flown to Toronto for a starring role in a national TV and radio ad campaign.

We love our community and it would be great to have someone from Richmond (like you!) star in the campaign. For your chance to win, upload your audition tape to YouTube by August 30, 2013. Go to http://cfc-fcc.ca/talentsearch to find out more.
