Reed Gabhart
Head of Goshen Campus

Last Thursday night we held one of our newer events on the Goshen Campus, but one that is growing both in size and spectacle every year! I'm talking about the 3rd Annual Middle School Sports Banquet that recognizes our Middle School athletes and their coaches for their many accomplishments over the course of the school year.

After a tasty taco bar dinner (and major kudos to our Chef Matt Thomas for whipping up a spicy feast for nearly 200 people!), we were treated to presentations from our coaches in every Middle School sport, followed by two trophies given to deserving competitors on each team.

What do I take away from this event?

First, just how much coaching means to the adults who choose to do it. Speaker after speaker commented on how much he/she gets out of working with young people. While it can certainly be frustrating (bad weather, sharing students with other activities, "questionable" officiating!), the rewards clearly outweigh the negatives. Our coaches are obviously dedicated, committed to bringing out the best in our athletes, and value good sportsmanship as much as winning. Passing these lessons on to our kids is just part of the gift they give to all of us. Their comments were both funny and touching, and one of the highlights of the evening.

Second, how supportive our children are of each other!
As "winners" were called to accept their trophies, huge cheers erupted every time. I didn't see any examples of anyone sulking or  wondering why he/she didn't receive a trophy. Our athletes have clearly been taught the "team" concept and are 100% behind one another. This is so nice to see in an increasingly "me" climate in America.

I know you join me in applauding ALL our coaches listed below! And it is certainly worth noting that many of them are our parents who are willing to give up major hours out of their certainly busy lives to give to the kids and St. Francis. Likewise, thanks to our faculty members who do the same (you'd think 8 hours with Middle School students in a day would be enough?). And, of course, where would we be without our tireless Athletic Director Tony Butler and Assistant Athletic Director Shavar Cowherd? These two devote overtime hours -- all the time -- to our athletic cause. All of you are rock stars! (And a special nod must also go to Cassandra Zimmerman for volunteering to do much of the behind-the-scenes organization necessary to put on a fantastic banquet!!)

Finally, kudos to the athletes themselves listed below! Juggling the demands of academics, hours put into athletics, and other school activities (and maintaining their personal lives!) is a huge task. Yet they take it on willingly and give their all time and time again. This was a night that makes you proud to be a Wyvern!

Track

The St. Francis track team had a very strong showing in their last two meets of the season. In the home finale, the Wyverns competed against Walden and the West End School. Both the 4th-6th and 7th-8th grade girls' team edged Walden in the dual meet. The boys' team finished second in the tri-team meet behind West End. Thanks goes out to all parents and volunteers who made the meet such a wonderful event.

The season came to a close with the Walden Invitational meet last week. A total of 12 schools competed in 28 events in boys' and girls' divisions before the meet was canceled because of the weather. The SFS 4th-6th girls' team placed second overall, scoring 77.5 team points. The 7th-8th boys had a strong showing also, finishing third overall and scoring 66 total team points. The 4th-6th boys finished 5th with 43 points and the 7th-8th girls finished in 10th place with 18 points in their respective divisions.

I would also like to thank Julie Dayton, Chase Carlson, and Teresa Saborsky for all their efforts to make this a memorable track season for myself and the athletes. They were true professionals and always went the extra mile to ensure our athletes were fully prepared for whatever was thrown at them. Congrats to all track athletes on a great season!

Gardening With Christine Brinkmann

If you pull a weed ... you can plant a seed!

Spring has finally sprung.

Your kiddos have been absolutely amazing help in the garden these past few weeks.  I promise you they haven't only been pulling weeds!  We have moved the chickens to the coop and made sure they were secure from predators. We built and planted a 1,000 sq. foot garden full of tomatoes, carrots, lettuce, radishes, beets, peas, beans, spinach, potatoes, corn, pumpkins, popcorn, melons, cucumbers, herbs, and flowers ... and did I mention we dug up and transplanted 10 fruit trees from my friends at New Directions Housing Corporation?!

You have amazing kids that I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know; they constantly motivate and encourage me to build upon this magical space. The possibilities are endless. They are a gift. Thank you.

If you are able to help me maintain and build upon some of these current projects, I have a SignUpGenius form ready for weekends and some of the dates that I have family obligations.

Please don't hesitate to email or call me if you have questions or want to do more than a weekend!  502-494-8212.

Lower School Choir Performance
Lower School Choir members traveled far and wide last Friday. They performed Broadway Beat for students at both the Preschool and High School. They also returned to The Forum at Brookside and sang while residents dined on lunch. They will perform for parents and students on Thursday, May 22. Join them in the Main Amp at 8:10 a.m. for their last performance of Broadway Beat.
Art Department News

It's the end of the school year!  That means art portfolios need to find their way home!  If your student is in JK, K, 1st, or 2nd grade, please come in and pick up his/her portfolio when you are at school. Please be respectful of the other students' portfolios, but feel free to grab the one(s) you need. Students 3rd grade and above will bring them home on their own.  Please contact your student's art teacher with any questions.

Teacher

Beginning Monday, May 19th, I will be having a sale of my most recent art collection, "Miniatures by Neisja," which I plan to sell at an upcoming craft show in New Jersey this summer. "Miniatures by Neisja" are small, collaged pieces mounted on 4"x4" wooden frames, featuring fabric and thread compositions on paper. The subjects range from hearts and ginkgo leaves to Xs and Os.
Part of my collection will be on display and for sale in my classroom until the end of school. Thanks so much for your support, St. Francis friends and faculty! Retirement is near, but I hope to maintain the many friendships I've built by attending special events like the "Our Good Earth" and Imagine! auctions!

Avoid the summer slump!
Summer Break is just around the corner! If you are looking for a way to keep your children academically engaged over the summer months, please consider purchasing Summer Solutions Workbooks. Each practice book contains 30 lessons along with Help Pages and an answer key for self-checking. The books can provide the necessary review and practice that allow students to retain important math and language arts skills. You can find more information, including sample lessons, help pages, and list of skills here.  It is recommended that the students complete a lesson three times per week over Summer Break. There are a variety of workbooks to choose from. If you would like to place an order, click here.  If you order by May 18th, the workbooks will come right to school and then into your child's backpack! These workbooks are only $11 each, and $1 from every book sold goes to St. Francis! Please contact Ann Mundt
if you have any questions.
