The Pegasus Parade event was a great success last week - thank you to all who volunteered or attended!

The highlight of the week was the Student Art Show and Senior Project Showcase, heldWednesday night.  The annual Art Show features self-portraits, other drawing, photography, films, and the musical stylings of the jazz ensemble.  Intermixed with this were the seniors, showing off their Senior Projects - yearlong efforts that have been researched, written up, and presented.  It was a fabulous evening that showed some of the best that St. Francis has to offer.  I particularly enjoyed the combination of these events with Incoming 9th Grade Registration, as once the 8th graders and their parents got done with the nitty-gritty, they too went downstairs to enjoy the showcase of art and Senior Projects.

For some levity in the midst of this first AP Exam week, today we welcomed the Lower School Choir and their Broadway Revue, under the direction of music teacher Kim Aberle.  The teenage audience was most appreciative of the show!

Next Friday is the all-school Prom, so just the reminder that it is indeed open to all students (although the seniors plan it).  Students may come as singles, in couples, or in groups - however they are most comfortable.  This year's event is at the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft from 8:00 p.m. - midnight.  Just a reminder that students do need to attend at least a half-day of school in order to attend social or extracurricular events in the evening.

Please watch the calendar in these weekly updates, as these next few weeks are busy ones!  As always, please be in touch with us if you have any questions.

Tennis

The 7th Region Tournament was held this week, and we are sending a school-record three players on to the State Tournament next week!  Gray Thurstone '14 and Jamie Anderson '15 were seeded 3rd and 4th, respectively, and enjoyed first-round byes, second-round victories, and quarterfinal wins.  They lost to the #1 and #2 seeds in the semifinal round in tough matches, but as top-four finishers in the Regional, move on to State.

Eva Borders '18 was seeded #1 in the Regional and did not drop a single game.  She was completely dominant, winning all three matches 6-0, 6-0.  What more is there to say about our 8th grader?

The other St. Francis tennis players also did themselves proud in Regional competition.  Lily Tierney played singles and lost but took one set to tiebreakers.  Emma Boland '17 and Talia Blue '17 lost in doubles competition in the first round but put up a tough fight.  Shelly Lancaster '18 and Esme Tyler '16 won their first match 6-3, 6-0 and then lost in the next round.  Graham Cote '14/Cole Von Feldt '14 and Andrew Thurstone '17/Matthew Siciliano '17 won their first-round matchups before falling in the second round.  Congratulations to all these competitors and good luck to Eva, Gray, and Jamie next week!

Track and Field

The team turned in a fantastic performance in last Monday's meet.  The boys' 4x100 team of Chris Kessler '15, exchange student Simon Spengler, Emerson Mudd '16, and Ethan McCrocklin '18 finished 3rd with a season-best time of 49.97.   Others scoring included:

100 M - Simon Spengler - 4th place, 12.66

100 M - Emerson Mudd - 5th place, 12.98

200 M - Simon Spengler - 5th place, 25.28

400 M - Ethan McCrocklin - 6th place, 56.77

800 M - Everett Davis '17 - 8th place, 2:41.55 (SEASON BEST)

Shot Put - Jewel Bailey '17 - 8th place, 18-05.50 (SEASON BEST)

Discus - Jewel Bailey '17 - 5th place, 53-05 (SEASON BEST)

The boys scored a total of 25 points to finish 5th out of 7 teams.  The girls, represented solely by Jewel Bailey, finished 6th out of 7 schools!

The team was slated to compete in the Class A Region 3 meet today, but it has been postponed until tomorrow at 2:00 EDT due to weather.  Good luck to our track and field athletes!

Improv Troupe takes trip to Chicago!

While most Kentuckians were celebrating the Kentucky Derby, Louisville's premier high school improv troupe, "Currently Out of Order," brought the funny to Chicago for the Teen Comedy Festival. The troupe flew into Chicago on Friday and caught up with former St. Francis front desk maven Jacob Isaac while visiting the Second City training center. The group also saw Second City's 102nd revue, directed by fellow Kentuckian Mick Napier. Saturday was devoted to learning all things improv. Students participated in workshops such as Sketch Comedy Writing, Musical Improvisation, Comedic Song Writing, Long Form Improv, Clown, Rap, and Stand-Up. Later that evening, various members of "Currently Out of Order" participated in long form, sketch, and musical improv scenes with members of different troupes from around the country. Truman Baize '16 and Gray Thurstone '14 even performed stand-up. "Currently Out of Order" was the headlining act of the high school set and did a tremendous job. Come see our final performance of the season this Saturday at 7:00 p.m. at The Bard's Town. See you there!

Message from the PA President

I hope everyone who was able to make it had a fabulous time at the Pegasus Parade--what a way to kick off Derby and enjoy some great Wyvern family time.  Big shout-out to all the volunteers who made everything run smoothly!!

As the school year starts to wind down, there's one more PA event that's important to have on your calendar:  the Book Buy-Back Days.  Buy Back for seniors will be Friday, May 16th from 2:00-3:30 p.m. and Buy Back for 9th-11th grades will be Thursday, May 29th from 11:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. and Friday, May 30th from 10:00 a.m.-noon.  The more parents we have volunteering, the easier the process will be for our students.  When you get the email from your trusty grade rep, please sign up for a shift or two.  The Used Book Sale is one of the PA's biggest fundraisers and the Buy Back is a critical part of the process--so answer the call and help collect those books!!

Happy Mother's Day to all our terrific Wyvern Moms!!
