What a week it's been!  Festivities kicked off last Friday after school with two student-faculty basketball games.  The first featured students (minus the boys' basketball team) against faculty and staff.  Buoyed by the skills of IT Director Keith Morris and Goshen Campus chef Matt Thomas, the faculty swept to a decisive win.  (Ralph Marshall, David Word, Benjamin Studevent-Hickman, Luke Johnson, Liz Minton and I rounded out the squad.)  The second act was the boys' varsity team against alums, coaches (which, yes, includes Tony Williams, Tony Butler, and Richard Butcher) and staff (Keith and Matt).  Again, the "old folks" pulled off the win.  Most importantly, it was a great couple of hours of fun and hoops.

On Monday, we enjoyed our last Choice Conversation of the year; this one with Nana Lampton.  Thanks again to Bob Klingle for all his work on this program.  Monday evening brought our second annual Academic Teams Banquet.  A big thank-you to Beth Beres for spearheading decorations and providing the celebratory cake.  We honored participants in Quick Recall, Governor's Cup, Math League, Science Olympiad, KYA/KUNA, and the World Language Festival.

Tuesday brought the highly anticipated annual Advisee Games competition.  We spent the afternoon at Seneca Park eating pizza and competing in the costume contest, wheelbarrow race, tug o' war, three-legged race, 50-yard dash, and water balloon toss. It's always a fun afternoon and a great way to enjoy some warm weather (finally) and each other.

Tonight is the annual Women's Retreat (a St. Francis tradition of over a decade), which well over half the girls in the school have signed up to attend.  The boys are also getting in on the act, holding their own Men's Retreat - an evening of paintball.

We will not have a Wyvern Weekly next week due to the Oaks Day holiday.  Please do note that on Thursday, Pegasus Parade Day, we are asking all students to leave school by 3:20 (unless they are staying to work at or attend the Parade).  This is also good general advice, as street closings make getting out of downtown markedly more difficult.

Please do mark your calendars for Wednesday, May 7th - the annual Student Art Show and Senior Project Showcase from 5:30 - 7:00 p.m.  You can drop in and see these wonderful drawings, paintings, photographs, and videos, as well as the fantastic projects the seniors have labored over for the better part of a year. Happy Derby Week!

Tennis

The Wyvern boys' tennis team carried a 11-3 overall record into our match with North Oldham High School on Monday.  Ben Weaver played a great match at #1 singles and went on to win 6-3, 6-2.  Angus Middleton and Alan Ziegler at #2 and #3 singles fought hard but went down.  Cole Von Feldt and Graham Cote at #1 doubles won with well-placed returns and opportunistic put-aways.

On Tuesday afternoon, the boys played well enough to defeat Eastern High School  5-0.  Gray Thurstone, Jamie Anderson and Ben Weaver, at # 1, 2, and 3 singles respectively, only lost three games among them in their matches.  Consecutive wins for both doubles teams was a refreshing sign this late in the season.  Cole Von Feldt and Graham Cote at # 1 doubles really fed off of each other in their 6-2 6-3 win. Matthew Siciliano and Andrew Thurstone at # 2 doubles continued to solidify their tactics in a tight 6-4, 6-3 win.

On the girls' side, the Wyverns didn't fare so well with top performer Eva Borders out of town on the 8th grade Big South Fork trip.  Lily Tierney gave a great effort at #1 singles but fell 6-0, 6-3.  Lucy Lv and Gracie Jones also dropped their matches at #2 and #3 singles as well.  In doubles action the results were about the as the Wyverns dropped three out of four doubles matches in the loss.

The boys' tennis team traveled to play Male on Wednesday.  With the season winding down, every victory counts toward a better region tournament seed. Gray Thurstone opened at # 1 singles against a veteran hard-hitting lefty and pulled out the 6-3, 6-1 win.  Jamie Anderson, at # 2 singles and still unbeaten this season, overpowered and overwhelmed his opponent from the start in a dominating 6-0  6-0 win.  Ben Weaver, at # 3 singles, lost very few points in his 6-1, 6-1 win.  Cole Von Feldt and Graham Cote, at # 1 doubles, dropped the first set, rebounded in the second, and lost the tiebreaker.  Andrew Thurstone and Matthew Siciliano too lost the first and rebounded in the second, and were able to take the tiebreaker and win their match.

Thursday afternoon, the Wyverns found themselves in a battle with regional opponent Manual.  With three of their top players unavailable due to school trips, the girls' team struggled in the match but gained some valuable experience.  Lucy Lv, Esme Tyler, and Gracie Jones played #1, #2 and #3 singles, with Talia Blue/Emma Boland, Maddie Case/Anna Finkelstein, and Shams Shaker/Fatima Adam taking the court in doubles.

Track

The track team traveled to KCD for their Invitational Meet on Saturday afternoon.  The Wyverns held their own in this meet. Foreign exchange student standout Simon Spengler continued his great season with a 8th place finish in the 100 Meters and 8th in the 200 Meters.  Also competing for the Wyverns were Emerson Mudd and Chris Kessler.  The Wyvern Mascot made a special appearance at the event as well.

High School Survey of Student Engagement
Over the next couple of weeks, St. Francis School will participate in the High School Survey of Student Engagement (an online survey). More than 400,000 students across over 40 states participated in the survey from 2006-2013. The survey assesses the extent to which students are involved in a variety of educational activities, and will help us measure students' level of engagement with their academics and extracurriculars. Individual students will not be identified on the surveys, and participation in the survey is voluntary. If you have any questions, please contact Suzanne Gorman.
