I wanted to take just a "little" space to thank everyone for all the congratulations on finishing the London Marathon the Sunday past! It is another indicator of how special a community we have here

The kids overwhelmed me at a going away "Good Luck" assembly, and the cards they made were priceless, funny, and heartwarming. I brought back stories to both Middle School and Lower School Morning Meetings this week and truly enjoyed sharing "lessons" learned and answering questions.

Lessons? When life gives you strained hamstrings - run slower (and have a good attitude about it!). My favorite question was "Did you cry when you read our cards?" Bless you, Mae Wilson. (I had to explain what "misty" meant.) And while the kids may have felt sorry for me that I didn't "win," they were so supportive of and thrilled for me that they really did help pull me through the last 10 miles. I told the Lower School kids that we finished in front of Buckingham Palace and the Queen invited me in for tea. Half of that is true, but they believed it all. And even though I didn't rate for tea, the students did make me feel like royalty. Thanks, everyone!

Meanwhile, this is a BIG week for our 7th and 8th graders, who both took their annual outdoor education trips! The 7th graders journeyed to Mammoth Cave from Wednesday through Friday, while the Class of 2014 took their annual pilgrimage to Big South Fork all week! I'm sure they will be buzzing with stories and tales of joy (and hardships!) to share with you this weekend! Our outdoor education program is one of the students' highlights of their time at St. Francis and a true rite of passage. They learn so many things about themselves, their peers, and their lives back home when they exit their daily routine and have to fend for themselves a little more. More importantly, they realize these lessons themselves, which we share around the campfires at night. We'll be sure to share some of their pictures in the newsletter that comes out after Derby.

It's hard to believe we have a little over a month of school left! It will descend on us like an avalanche with the Kindergarten Derby next week, the 7/8 formal dance ("The Masquerade Ball"), banquets, talent shows - all leading up to the Goshen Graduation for the Class of 2014. Stay tuned for updates and details as they will be coming at you fast and furious!

On Tuesday, Mary Beth Uberti from the nonprofit organization Operation Parent came to provide expert advice to parents about helping children learn appropriate content, safety, and responsibility when using social media. Mary Beth emphasized that for many pre-teens and teens, texting and social networks are their major lifeline for communicating with peers, and she defined social networks as online places where kids can hang out together, post photos, artwork, links to other sites, and write comments about what they experience.
Some commonly used sites and apps, such as Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, Tumblr, Vine, and Kik Messenger, were discussed and information was provided about how each app works. Mary Beth stressed that it is very important for parents to know what sites their children are using and to understand how to navigate the sites in order to stay current on their children's online lives
In summary, the main points of emphasis were:

* Use a social media contract that outlines the family agreement about technology use.
* Explain and check the privacy settings for social networking sites and apps.
* Turn off "geotagging" as it identifies exact locations of people and photos (not the same as GPS).
* Read the "help" section of social networking sites in order to understand privacy settings, age requirements, and use of personal information by the site.
* Collect passwords for all technology used by your child.

For those who were unable to attend, I have copies of the PowerPoint presentation and the additional handouts that were provided. Please email me or stop by my office to get a copy.

4th Grade Raising Money for 100 Wyverns!

The 4th graders will be offering $1 face painting (on hands or biceps) during first recess next Tuesday through Thursday to raise money for their contribution to the gym of a cotton candy machine!

7th Grade Service Learning Project
Before Spring Break, the 7th grade helped feed the homeless of Louisville. Using funds raised from bake sales and book sales, the 7th graders purchased supplies to prepare full meals for approximately 300 homeless people through the aegis of the organization Loaves and Fishes. On a Saturday afternoon, the students prepared the food at St. Francis Church in Harrods Creek, then loaded it on a van to be taken to Old Male High School where the Salvation Army runs a kitchen. Curtis "The Chicken Man" Taylor, the main man with Loaves and Fishes, led the preparation and serving initiatives. The 7th graders were a terrific crew, responding well to guidance and performing tasks with great efficiency and purpose. From beginning to end, this service project of several phases was a complete and rewarding success for all involved. Kelly Bailey and Michael Mahoney were extremely proud of the group. Parent volunteers were a big help on the day. A special thanks goes out to Curtis Taylor and Cassandra Zimmerman for their stellar leadership.

If you have come through the building in the last few weeks, you may have noticed a book drive going on. This has been fun, but not as rewarding as we'd hoped. So we thought about it and decided to have a DVD/music drive following the book drive, thinking that people may have a greater desire to get rid of, as well as purchase, DVDs and music. Starting next week, we will have a labeled box out front to collect CDs and DVDs, where you may put any working discs that are appropriate for school (G-PG) and a table near the entrance where we will be selling them. We think this should be a lot of fun and would appreciate any donations.

Avoid the summer slump!
Summer Break is just around the corner! If you are looking for a way to keep your children academically engaged over the summer months, please consider purchasing Summer Solutions Workbooks. Each practice book contains 30 lessons along with Help Pages and an answer key for self-checking. The books can provide the necessary review and practice that allow students to retain important math and language arts skills. You can find more information, including sample lessons, help pages, and list of skills here.  It is recommended that the students complete a lesson three times per week over Summer Break. There are a variety of workbooks to choose from. If you would like to place an order, click here.  If you order by May 18th, the workbooks will come right to school and then into your child's backpack! These workbooks are only $11 each, and $1 from every book sold goes to St. Francis! Please contact Ann Mundt
if you have any questions.

As you know, we opted to not have our children do the traditional door-to-door selling of products this year in lieu of simply asking each FAMILY to pay $50 in support of the PA. Therefore, if you have multiple children it is not $50/ child, just $50 for the entire family. I bet you spent more than that on wrapping paper and chocolates in the past!

If you are writing a check, please note in the Memo line that it is for Goshen PA dues and your child's name. If you believe you have already paid but it is not reflected in our records, please contact the PA Treasurers Tim and Melissa Patrick.
