Alexandra and I are very pleased to announce some new hires for the 2014-15 school year!

We mentioned in an earlier newsletter that Trent Apple '92, currently heading up two of the sophomore Civ classes, will join us full time.  Trent has been a tremendous addition to our faculty this year and we are thrilled to have more of his time and talents next year.

Juan Ramirez joins us in the English department (and will likely also teach one Spanish class).  Juan  has a BA in English/creative writing with minors in history and theatre from Florida State University and an MFA in creative writing with a concentration in poetry from Sarah Lawrence College.  He is a native Spanish speaker who grew up in Florida, but his family is from Puerto Rico.  He began teaching right out of college in 2006 and has taught in middle school (particularly, a public charter school for gifted kids), high school, and college.  While at Sarah Lawrence, he discovered progressive education, and so when we posted our job on the National Association of Independent Schools' web site, he contacted us immediately.  He will move to Louisville this summer and we look forward to introducing him to all of you.

As you know, we have been working to bring the Learning Resource Center to the High School, and this will happen in a full-time way in August, as Emily Boyle will leave the front desk and transition to the role of LRC Coordinator.  She will coordinate with teachers and provide academic support, particularly in the areas of organizational management, executive function, coordinating tutors, leading after-school Homework Hall, etc.  Emily has a BS in psychology from Centre and an M.Ed in counseling and personnel services from U of L, and worked in academic support during her master's practicum.  This is the kind of job she hoped would one day become possible when she took the front desk position last year, and we are thrilled to be able to use her talents more fully.

We are currently evaluating candidates to teach French next year, replacing Sarah Moran, and will announce that hire once complete.

The boys' tennis team finished last week with a trip to South Oldham to take on the Dragons Friday night.  Gray Thurstone at #1 singles had a hard-fought battle with one of the state's top talents, going down 6-4; 6-3.. Jamie Anderson at #2 singles remained undefeated this season by thoroughly frustrating his opponent, who at one point was heard screaming "He's making me play like a 12 year old!"  Jamie's steady play forced error after error in his 6-4; 6-3 win. Graham Cote had an up-and-down physical and mental battle at #3 singles.  After dropping the first, Graham stormed back to win the second and led in the 3rd set tiebreaker before going down 6-2; 3-6; 10-8. Nick Scarfe and Ben Weaver at #1 doubles displayed improvement and played well together in their 6-1; 6-0 loss. Matthew Siciliano and Andrew Thurstone at #2 doubles showed signs of creating and seizing opportunities but lost 6-2; 6-2. Tanner Dehler at #4 singles and  Angus Middleton and Alan Zeigler at #3 doubles went down in spirited efforts 8-1 and 8-3 respectively.

After a rainout on Monday, the boys were back in action Tuesday at home against Ballard.  Gray Thurstone continued his gauntlet through some of the best tennis players in the state  unfortunately losing 6-4; 6-2.  Jamie Anderson kept his unbeaten #2 singles record intact as he put together some great tennis to win 6-2; 6-4.  Ben Weaver, at  # 3 singles, tried everything he had but couldn't come through in his 6-1; 6-1 defeat.  Cole Von Feldt/Graham Cote went down 6-1; 6-0 at #1 doubles.  Andrew Thurstone/Matthew Siciliano, at # 2 doubles, are putting the pieces together as they lost the 1st set, fought back to win the 2nd, and then lost the tiebreaker in a 2-6; 3-6; 1-0 (10-4) loss.   Ethan Mackin, Nick Scarfe and Carter Wooton all won at # 4, 5, and 6 singles.  7th graders Tanner Dehler and Angus Middleton were able to get in a spirited and competitive set against each other.  Angus was able to win in a hard-fought tie-break set 7-6 (7-1).

The girls' team traveled to Ballard to face the Bruins on Tuesday afternoon.  Eva Borders at #1 singles pulled out a hard-fought first set 7-5 before running away with the second set 6-1.  Lily Tierney faced a tough opponent at #2, losing 6-1; 6-0 but taking away some valuable lessons about her game.  Lucy Lv played one of her best matches this year, losing 6-2;6-3.  Emma Boland and Talia Blue made their debut at #1 doubles, playing hard but losing 6-1; 6-2.  They competed well and will win that kind of match very soon.  Shelly Lancaster and Esme Tyler lost their first set 6-1, but learned from their mistakes and came back to almost take the second set, eventually losing in a tie-breaker 7-5.  The second was the best set they have played up to this point.  Anna Finkelstein and Rose Gilbert also did well today, losing a hard fought match 8-3.  Lastly, alone and in the cold sun, the team of Mary Claire Duncan and Meredith Fleming won their match 8-2.

On Wednesday, the girls continued their road trip, heading to Central Park to take on Presentation.  It was a beautiful day that ended with great results as they pulled out the victory 3-2.  Eva Borders won her #1 singles match convincingly, 6-0l 6-1.  Lucy Lv in her first appearance at #2 singles fought hard but fell to a strong opponent 6-1; 6-0.  Lily Tierney at #3 singles won her match 6-2; 6-0, giving us a 2-1 lead.  Anna Finklestein played well at #4 singles but lost 6-3;6-3 after a marathon match.  In doubles action, Shelly Lancaster and Esme Tyler played their best match yet at #1 doubles, eventually losing to a well-oiled opposing team 7-5; 6-2.  Talia Blue and Emma Boland were able to defeat their #2 doubles opponent 6-4; 6-2 with their usual good humor.  They have so much fun on the court that I don't think the other team minds losing to them.  Our #3 doubles team of Mary Claire Duncan and Meredith Fleming dominated the opposing team, cruising to victory 8-0.

While the girls headed to Presentation, the boys traveled a little further up the road to take on North Oldham.  Gray Thurstone and Jamie Anderson rested on this day, giving the younger Wyverns a chance to prove themselves.  Ben Weaver played at #1 singles came out hitting well and moving well as his groundstrokes in his 6-3;6-4 win.  Carter Wooton at #2 singles went down in an back and forth 6-4;6-3 loss.  Alan Ziegler at # 3 singles pulled out a commanding 6-1;7-5 win. Cole Von Feldt and Graham Cote looked dominant in their 6-3,6-3 win. Andrew Thurstone and Matthew Siciliano at #2 doubles had another three-set thriller as they won the big points in the first set but eventually went down 5-7;7-5;1-0 (10-4).   The Wyverns pulled out the victory in this match 3-2.  In extra action, Angus Middleton at # 4 singles had a tough battle in his 6-5;7-5 loss.  Tanner Dehler showed improvement in a 6-1; 6-0 loss.
