While Reed is recovering from successfully running the London marathon (see the picture below -- he had a friend who ran with him!), I'd like to take this opportunity to highlight a few of the fun activities that are going on in the Lower School this spring.

If you've spent any time around Lower School students these past few weeks, you've no doubt heard about "the chicks." Carey Thornburgh and her students have been watching over and taking care of 30 eggs brought to us by our Garden Coordinator, Christine Brinkman.

A few lucky students actually got to see the chicks hatch during class! Always creative, Carey incorporated the chicks into her science curriculum through fun activities such as "candling" the eggs and predicting which ones would hatch. The 15 chicks that did hatch are being moved to a "brooder" in the Greenhouse and will soon have a new place to call home, since Christine is working on building them a coop with materials that have generously been donated to the school.

Keep your eye out for the coop, which will be located near the garden. The garden is also well on its way to revival under Christine's guidance!

Speaking of eggs, the JK, Kindergarten, and 1st graders all participated in spring egg and basket hunts this afternoon. This has become a much-anticipated annual event held around the holidays of Easter and Passover. Many of the Lower School classes have been discussing their family's traditions in conjunction with these holidays. You have been able to feel the excitement and energy around these events this past week!

Another big event is coming up -- please mark your calendar for this year's Kindergarten Derby, held on Wednesday, April 30th at 2:00 p.m.

If you have never seen the Kindergarten Derby, it is worth the drive out to Goshen. The festivities are started by the 1st and 2nd graders who "parade" around the circle in front of the school. The kindergarteners make and name their horses and race them while they are cheered on by the rest of the school. The most vocal of all are usually the kindergarteners' 8th grade "buddies" who get a special place in the "infield" to watch. It is always so fun to watch the kindergarteners get their time in the spotlight!

One final activity that we hope you will attend is the Lower School Talent Show, which will be on Tuesday, May 20th at 1:30 p.m. Every student in 1st through 4th grade is invited to sign up to share their special talents with the rest of the school. It is such a fun way for our students to perform for their peers and show off what makes them special. (If you have a JK or Kindergarten student, don't worry; they will have their chance during a Lower School Morning Meeting "Talent Share" coordinated by the ultra-talented Kim Aberle!)

These, as well as the many other activities that will be held between now and the end of the school year, remind me of what a vibrant and exciting school community we share. We hope to see you at many (or all!) of these events, as we celebrate the end to another wonderful school year!

How many Wyverns to complete our Gym? 100 Wyverns!

Siofra Rucker
Director of
Advancement

As announced, our Gym is on schedule and will be completed this summer with our Grand Opening in August!

In our recent parent coffees, many of you asked about fundraising and if we had raised enough to complete the gym.  The answer is that we are very, very close.  The Major Gifts have been received, and these gifts fund the building itself and almost all of fixtures and fittings.

However, we do need your help to make the Goshen Gym all it can be!  And, we want everyone involved with the Goshen Campus to be a part of this incredibly important project for this Campus.

We are almost there!  Our goal is to get 100 new gifts (ranging from $10,000 to $100) to complete the Gym between Spring Break and Summer Break.  In addition, each class is going to be a part of making this happen. Students will be working with their teachers to choose their contribution to the gym -- whatever they think it must have, from hula hoops to daffodils to a popcorn machine.  We also need help completing the landscaping and the deck between the gym and the playshelter, which are not part of the scope of the project.  This is where you come in!

The focus of this phase of the campaign is parent and student participation.  I hope that you will also join us and make a gift to help complete the gym.  Each gift will be heralded with a large Baby Wyvern sticker on the wall, and each sticker will be personalized with the donor's name and/or the amount or purpose of the gift, as the donor wishes.

Please feel free to email me if you have any questions, and please let me know how you would like to be a part of the "100 Wyverns" campaign.

Lacrosse

The SFS Lacrosse season is underway and this year our team has been assisted by North Oldham Middle.  The Wyverns have played some memorable games of late.  In their first win of the season, leading 1-0 for the majority of the game, the opponents managed to tie the game up, ultimately sending the game into overtime.  It took two overtimes before 7th grader Avery Wilson sent in a blazing goal that won the game!  Before Spring Break, the team took on Holy Trinity and suffered a tough 3-2 defeat, after leading for most of the game.  8th grader Harrison Crawford scored in the loss.  All players are working hard on the field and are improving each time they play.

Choir Performance
The Lower School Choir was invited to sing last Friday for the final Fish Fry of 2014, sponsored by the North Oldham Lions Club. The choir came out strong and remained energetic throughout their performance, titled "Broadway Beat". Their level of enthusiasm impressed many families who were not familiar with St. Francis School. Great job, kids!!

Fundraising for 8th Grade Gift

By the 8th grade Student Council: Hannah, Theo, Eva, Natalie, Shelly and Lillian (aka Tiger Lilly)

If you have come through the building in the last few weeks, you may have noticed a book drive going on. This has been fun, but not as rewarding as we'd hoped. So we thought about it and decided to have a DVD/music drive following the book drive, thinking that people may have a greater desire to get rid of, as well as purchase, DVDs and music. Starting next week, we will have a labeled box out front to collect CDs and DVDs, where you may put any working discs that are appropriate for school (G-PG) and a table near the entrance where we will be selling them. We think this should be a lot of fun and would appreciate any donations.

Operation Parent
Please join us on Tuesday, April 22nd from 8:10 a.m. to 9:10 a.m. when Mary Beth Uberti from Operation Parent will join us on the Goshen Campus to talk to parents about social media. Operation Parent is a non-profit organization with the mission to educate, encourage, and equip parents with information to raise incredible children. Mary Beth will focus on how to talk to children about appropriate content, safety, and responsibility when using social media. She will also provide an update on the latest apps being used by children and young teens. Even if your child is not using social media currently, it is important to have the information to start conversations about this topic with your children before problems occur. We hope you will be able to join us for this informative discussion. For more information, please contact Julie Marks, Director of Counseling Services.

Avoid the summer slump! Summer Break is just around the corner! If you are looking for a way to keep your children academically engaged over the summer months, please consider purchasing Summer Solutions Workbooks. Each practice book contains 30 lessons along with Help Pages and an answer key for self-checking. The books can provide the necessary review and practice that allow students to retain important math and language arts skills. You can find more information, including sample lessons, help pages, and list of skills here.  It is recommended that the students complete a lesson three times per week over Summer Break. There are a variety of workbooks to choose from. If you would like to place an order, click here.  If you order by May 18th, the workbooks will come right to school and then into your child's backpack! These workbooks are only $11 each, and $1 from every book sold goes to St. Francis! Please contact Ann Mundt if you have any questions.

As you know, we opted to not have our children do the traditional door-to-door selling of products this year in lieu of simply asking each FAMILY to pay $50 in support of the PA. Therefore, if you have multiple children it is not $50/ child, just $50 for the entire family. I bet you spent more than that on wrapping paper and chocolates in the past!

If you are writing a check, please note in the Memo line that it is for Goshen PA dues and your child's name. If you believe you have already paid but it is not reflected in our records, please contact the PA Treasurers Tim and Melissa Patrick.
