Every April, when we return from Spring Break, it suddenly feels like we are practically at the end of the year!  This is in some ways good, of course, as everyone looks forward to the warmth and fun of summer, but it's also a bit terrifying because we have so much to do, still, this school year! (See list at the bottom, for example!)

We did wrap up our six Community Service half-days this week.  We don't count hours per se, but it is safe to say that St. Francis students and faculty/staff spent well over 2,000 hours this school year serving the community at our various sites.

Thanks to all the 9th and 10th grade parents who attended the Parent Coffee with Alexandra and me on Thursday.  We loved getting to chat with you, and hope a large number of 11th and 12th grade parents will join us next Wednesday, April 16th at 8:10 a.m. for Morning Meeting and coffee afterward.

The week before Spring Break, we had one of our Choice Conversations, the brainchild of alumni parent Bob Klingle.  This particular Conversation lunch was with Dr. Richard Shay, a local dentist. He had some incredible wisdom to impart to the 25 assembled students, using his life experiences as examples.  He defined happiness as doing the things we say we are going to do (and not doing what we say we won't); for example, actually getting a term paper done instead of avoiding it, because at some point, you understand that it's not worth feeling bad.  Dr. Shay emphasized integrity and the pain of having to live with excuses when you know you haven't done your best work.  He advised tackling problems head-on rather than avoiding them.  It was a message that I know our students hear frequently from their parents and teachers, but it never hurts to reinforce it!  I've asked Dr. Shay to return next year and share his experiences with more students.

As promised, here is a list of the highlights of the coming few weeks:

Thursday 4/17 - Talent Show (during school)

Friday 4/18 - Kentucky Shakespeare Festival performance (during school)

The boys' and girls' tennis teams returned to the court Tuesday afternoon for their first matches since Spring Break.  Both teams faced stiff competition in their return from break.  The girls squared off against Assumption at Top Gun Academy while the boys traveled to St. Xavier to take on the Tigers.

In girls' action, Eva Borders, playing #1 singles, battled through a sore wrist to win her first set 6-2.  In her second set, she returned to her dominant form, finishing her opponent 6-0.  Lily Tierney played a competitive match at #2 singles but eventually fell 6-2, 6-0.  Lucy Lv played a bit tight in the first set but regained some composure in the second, though she could not pull out the win losing 6-0, 6-3.  The #1 and #2 doubles teams of Esme Tyler/Shelly Lancaster and Emma Boland/Meredith Fleming faced very stiff competition, but battled in losses, gaining tremendous experience along the way.  The #3 duo of Anna Finkelstein/Gracie Jones were able to pull out their match, winning 8-4.

On the boys' side, Gray Thurstone, at #1 singles, showcased outstanding tennis as he battled St. X's top young talent in an entertaining fight that was tense and a mental test for them both in a 6-2, 6-4 loss.  Jamie Anderson at #2 singles lost the first set despite serving well.  In the second set, Jamie was a terror as he stormed back to take a 5-4 lead.  As the rain began, the match stood at 2-6, 5-4.  Ben Weaver at #3 singles tried off-pace returns and placement adjustments to get into the match, but went down 6-0, 6-2.  Cole Von Feldt/Graham Cote at #1 doubles tried to battle but could not produce the goods on this day.  Matthew Siciliano/Andrew Thurstone at #2 doubles were a bit overmatched in their 6-0, 6-0 loss. Tanner Dehler, Ethan Mackin, Alan Ziegler, and Nick Scarfe were able to get on the court for pro sets before the rains returned.  St. X was a tough battle for all and gave us a blueprint of what we need to work on to improve.

On Wednesday, both the varsity and junior varsity girls teams were in competition against Collegiate.  The varsity team traveled to Seneca Park while the junior varsity team played at home.  Neither team played well enough to pull out the victory.  The varsity did notch one win, from top player Eva Borders, who defeated #1 Collegiate player Caroline Cox 6-2, 6-2, marking her first win against a ranked opponent this season.  The JV fell short, losing its matches.

On Thursday, the girls' tennis team was back in action at home against Christian Academy.  The weather was nice as the girls came out to stop their current losing streak.  Eva Borders continued her dominance, winning at #1 singles 6-0, 6-1.  Lily Tierney at #2 singles played a tough match against her opponent and lost a heartbreaker 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).  Lucy Lv fell in her match at #3 singles.  The match score sat at 2-1, with hopes of the victory in the hands of the two doubles teams.  The freshman duo of Talia Blue and Emma Boland pulled out a victory in their match 6-4, 6-1.  The sophomore tandem of Shelly Lancaster and Esme Tyler played a tough first set, falling 7-5, and they didn't have enough to pull out the victory. The match final was 3-2 Christian Academy.  In additional action, Meredith Fleming won her pro set match 8-5.  Gracie Jones and Anna Finkelstein dropped their pro set match 8-6.

Tennis Schedule

Monday 4/14 B/G v. Atherton, Tuesday 4/15 B @ Ballard, Wednesday 4/16 G @ Presentation, Thursday 4/17 B @ CAL.  All matches start between 4-4:15 p.m.

The Wyvern track team was in action during the weather-delayed St. Xavier Master Meet on Tuesday night.  This was the first event of the season for the Wyverns under new head coach Shavar Cowherd.  Though the team is not that big, they were able to score in their first meet!  Exchange student, Simon Spengler got things going in the 100 M dash with a seventh-place finish.  The top performance of the night came from 8th grader Ethan McCrocklin, who finished 4th in the 400 M.  Up next for the Wyverns is the Fairdale Master Meet on Tuesday 4/15 and the KCD Invitational on Saturday 4/19.

    Parent Association News
    Message from the PA President
    Sarah Harlan Photo

I hope everyone had a rejuvenating spring break, whether you travelled far or stayed close to home.  The PA did not merely sun itself on the beach--the PA Board approved its latest Faculty/Staff Grant request, helping with the funding for the spectacular Wyvern Mascot costume!  In case you were wondering where your PA dues, book sale revenue, Kroger Card proceeds, and Target RedCard kickbacks go--most of our funds go towards Faculty/Staff Grants.  I know you've heard me talk about this before, but it bears repeating--my favorite part of my role as PA President is the honor of playing fairy godmother to our devoted Faculty/Staff.  So when there's something that will enhance our students' learning experiences, enrich the St. Francis community, or make a teacher's classroom work a little more smoothly, we step in to grant wishes.  This year we received requests totaling over $7,900 and granted almost $7,400 for everything from the Freedom from Chemical Dependency workshops for students and parents to chess clocks to high-tech lab equipment to the Wyvern mascot costume.

So, while most of you have heard me say that I'd love to earn enough through the easy, no-brainer, painless fundraiser that is Kroger Cards and do away with PA dues, we're not there yet.  So before you get completely caught up in Derby fever and we find ourselves with just a few weeks of the school year left, PAY YOUR DUES NOW!!  You'll be glad you did!!

Don't like to pay online?  Send your check for $50, made out to St. Francis PA, to school and please make sure you mark your family name or child/children's names who are here on the Downtown Campus.

The PA and our fabulous Faculty/Staff thank you!!
