I am writing in Reed's place this week because he is out today and next week, and I want to share with you the reason he's out: he's fulfilling a personal quest that he set for himself about 10 years ago to run all five of the world's major marathons.

He ran Boston in 2002 and 2005, Chicago in 2003, New York in 2007, and Berlin in 2010.  The final major is London, which he is running this Sunday.  What an incredible accomplishment!  I am in awe of the dedication and level of fitness that it takes to run one, much less multiple marathons spanning over a decade.

Reed has also run Anchorage '00, Louisville '01, Cleveland '03, and Memphis '06, by the way, which means he ran marathons for almost eight straight years.  Having never run a single marathon myself, I had to ask Reed why he had set this goal for himself.  His response was "I believe in having goals, pushing yourself, and meeting challenges.  It also forced me to travel to Europe twice, which I really wanted to do.  It has taught me many lessons beyond the physical challenges, and it is every bit as spiritual as it is physical.  I have shared wonderful moments with family and friends and new friends that I will never forget."   We had a wonderful assembly Wednesday to send him off with all the love and support of the SFS community.  Lower School students made cards for him, and a group of 3rd graders each shared an inspirational, athletic-related quote with him.   There was not a dry eye in the house - at least as far as Reed and I were concerned!  Please join me on wishing Reed well on this journey and congratulating him upon his return both for the incredible personal accomplishment, but also for the wonderful role model he is for our children by doing this and sharing it with them.

One other quick note that was also a part of Wednesday's assembly: we welcomed a new member of the SFS community as the life-size Wyvern Mascot made its debut!  This was a gift from the Senior Class of 2013, combined with funds from the Downtown Campus Parent Association.  For the first time in St. Francis history, we have a real mascot costume that was custom made just for us.  The Wyvern will be attending various athletic and other events to encourage Wyvern pride.  If you have an event at which you'd like a Wyvern appearance, please contact Athletic Director Tony Butler.  Two students will be donning the Wyvern Costume for the remainder of the year:  Joe Harlan '14 at the High School and Thomas Simpson '19 at the Goshen Campus.

How many Wyverns to complete our Gym? 100 Wyverns!

Siofra Rucker
Director of
Advancement

As announced, our Gym is on schedule and will be completed this summer with our Grand Opening in August!

In our recent parent coffees, many of you asked about fundraising and if we had raised enough to complete the gym.  The answer is that we are very, very close.  The Major Gifts have been received, and these gifts fund the building itself and almost all of fixtures and fittings.

However, we do need your help to make the Goshen Gym all it can be!  And, we want everyone involved with the Goshen Campus to be a part of this incredibly important project for this Campus.

We are almost there!  Our goal is to get 100 new gifts (ranging from $10,000 to $100) to complete the Gym between Spring Break and Summer Break.  In addition, each class is going to be a part of making this happen. Students will be working with their teachers to choose their contribution to the gym -- whatever they think it must have, from hula hoops to daffodils to a popcorn machine.  We also need help completing the landscaping and the deck between the gym and the playshelter, which are not part of the scope of the project.  This is where you come in!

The focus of this phase of the campaign is parent and student participation.  I hope that you will also join us and make a gift to help complete the gym.  Each gift will be heralded with a large BabyWyvern sticker on the wall, and each sticker will be personalized with the donor's name and/or the amount or purpose of the gift, as the donor wishes.  So it might be "4th grade: 75 hula hoops", or "Jones Family: $5,000", or "Anonymous: cotton candy machine".  Donors for this phase of the Campaign will also have their names and gifts displayed during the Grand Opening in August, as well as in the Annual Report for 2013-14.

Please feel free to email me if you have any questions, and please let me know how you would like to be a part of the "100 Wyverns" campaign.

Fundraising for 8th Grade Gift

By the 8th grade Student Council: Hannah, Theo, Eva, Natalie, Shelly and Lillian (aka Tiger Lilly)

If you have come through the building in the last few weeks, you may have noticed a book drive going on. This has been fun, but not as rewarding as we'd hoped. So we thought about it and decided to have a DVD/music drive following the book drive, thinking that people may have a greater desire to get rid of, as well as purchase, DVDs and music. Starting next week, we will have a labeled box out front to collect CDs and DVDs, where you may put any working discs that are appropriate for school (G-PG) and a table near the entrance where we will be selling them. We think this should be a lot of fun and would appreciate any donations.

We Day Kentucky

On Tuesday, the 3rd, 4th, 6th, and 7th grades, along with several 5th grade members of the We Act Club, attended the second We Day Kentucky event, a celebration of service learning for students.  Guest speakers and performers including Mayor Greg Fischer, jazz pianist Harry Pickens, Kentucky cellist Ben Sollee, and 14-year-old motivational speaker Sydney Brouillard-Coyle encouraged students to find a spark to ignite their passion for service and to get their "boots dirty" in taking better care of the world and of others. During a "working lunch" session, students participated in a small-group activity to exchange service ideas with students from other schools. In the words of the students:

"We Day is a celebration of service learning. People all across the U.S. and Canada come to hear people like Sydney, Ben Sollee, and the mayor talk to us about service.  You can't buy a ticket to We Day.  You earn it by doing service... I think the speaker that impacted me the most was Sydney. Sydney is a 14-year-old girl that does service all around the world.  She made me feel like I could do it, too, that I can change the world. I am so thankful I got to go to We Day. It is an experience I will never forget."  Caroline Frederick

"Overall, Mini We Day this year was energizing, inspiring, and motivational.  At some points in the show there were messages from the speakers that made you want to jump out of your seat, run out the door, and immediately do anything you could to help your community or the world.  I think Mini We Day this year did a good job keeping you both on the edge of your seat or thinking deeply about what you could do to change the world in a positive way."  Thomas Fogarty

"Mini We Day was probably one of the best field trips we went on this year. It was fun yet informative and it inspired me to help the world more."  Holly Yelton

"Lunch was very fun--meeting kids from other schools and discussing what their service projects had been.  It helped me see that kids really can do great things to help the world.  We Day made me feel that what our school does for service is a really great thing."  Connor Gorman

"All the speakers taught me one thing that I'll never forget.  Don't worry about what you can't do; it's about what you can do. All those kids in the Kentucky Center are changing the world. It might take a while, but we can solve those problems out in the world. I know that with all those kids in that room, we can do anything. We've just got to be willing to get our boots a little dirty."  Amelia Dimas

Natural Bridge Field Trip

The 5th grade class had an exciting journey to Natural Bridge. The kids enjoyed geological hikes with explanations from Brian, a resident naturalist, about rock formations and critters living in the park. This first overnight
trip with their peers
prepares students for the later overnight environmental education trips they take in 6th through 8th grades. On the Natural Bridge trip, the kids enjoyed dining on Southern comfort food from the buffet in the lodge; spending time together learning how to build campfires; calling a Barred Owl; passing and holding salamanders and other diurnal creatures; and appreciating the special geologic features found in Eastern Kentucky. A treat this particular visit was the surprise layer of wet powder snow that fell overnight. It was the perfect mix for snowballs and snowmen to share with friends. An excerpt from a student reflects an activity soon after we arrived at the lodge: "Soon after we finished our lunches we headed outside and embarked on our hike. When we first started our hike, we headed for a cave that was up ahead. The [ranger] began to tell us about the native fossils of Kentucky. Soon after we began to look for these fossils in the cave and found one...Eventually after leaving the cave, we soon climbed up the Natural Bridge, which is one of the coolest things I've ever seen."

Operation Parent
Please join us on Tuesday, April 22nd from 8:10 a.m. to 9:10 a.m. when Mary Beth Uberti from Operation Parent will join us on the Goshen Campus to talk to parents about social media. Operation Parent is a non-profit organization with the mission to educate, encourage, and equip parents with information to raise incredible children. Mary Beth will focus on how to talk to children about appropriate content, safety, and responsibility when using social media. She will also provide an update on the latest apps being used by children and young teens. Even if your child is not using social media currently, it is important to have the information to start conversations about this topic with your children before problems occur. We hope you will be able to join us for this informative discussion. For more information, please contact Julie Marks, Director of Counseling Services.

As you know, we opted to not have our children do the traditional door-to-door selling of products this year in lieu of simply asking each FAMILY to pay $50 in support of the PA. Therefore, if you have multiple children it is not $50/ child, just $50 for the entire family. I bet you spent more than that on wrapping paper and chocolates in the past!

If you are writing a check, please note in the Memo line that it is for Goshen PA dues and your child's name. If you believe you have already paid but it is not reflected in our records, please contact the PA Treasurers Tim and Melissa Patrick.
