Spring Break NO SCHOOL

Reed Gabhart, Head of Goshen Campus

Reed Gabhart
Head of Goshen Campus
As we head off for Spring Break (and hopefully more spring-like weather!), we are also at the end of our third quarter grading period. I hope you've had a chance to share and discuss grades, comments, and effort/behavior marks with your children. It also means it is time to announce our Middle School Effort Honor Roll for the third quarter!
The majority of our students continue to put forth good effort, and over half the class in every grade level stood at our assembly this week when the lists were announced. I reminded the students that inclusion on the year-end Elizabeth Archibald Effort Honor Roll consists of students making the effort honor roll two out of the first three quarters AND the last quarter. (This ensures students give solid effort throughout the entire school year!) Congratulations to the following students for excellent effort and dedication to their classes!

Many of you will recall that Carrie from the Peace Education Program, a local organization that helps children learn to constructively resolve conflict, came in the fall to train our 6th graders to be Cooperative Game Leaders. Since early February, our 6th graders have been put into pairs and have been working with Lower School students during lead/advisee time on Wednesdays and Thursdays. The 6th graders are improving their leadership skills and are helping teach the Lower School students important skills such as communication, cooperation, and observation through fun and exciting games. As one 6th grader commented, "I like this process because I enjoy working with the younger students and am excited to show them how to do things that will help them." Check out our students in action!

Track

The track team held its first home meet of the season last Wednesday.  Outstanding performances were had by many St. Francis athletes. Roughly 100 competitors in grades 4th through 8th from SFS, Anchorage, and Walden competed in the meet.

Coaches Cowherd, Carlson, Dayton, and Saborsky would like to thank the volunteers who assisted with the event, and we are proud of the competitiveness of the team. The blisteringly cold temperatures did not stop the show from going on. The Wyverns collectively did great as they placed first in all four team divisions of the meet. Operation Parent
Please join us on Tuesday, April 22nd from 8:10 a.m. to 9:10 a.m. when Mary Beth Uberti from Operation Parent will join us on the Goshen Campus to talk to parents about social media. Operation Parent is a non-profit organization with the mission to educate, encourage, and equip parents with information to raise incredible children. Mary Beth will focus on how to talk to children about appropriate content, safety, and responsibility when using social media. She will also provide an update on the latest apps being used by children and young teens. Even if your child is not using social media currently, it is important to have the information to start conversations about this topic with your children before problems occur. We hope you will be able to join us for this informative discussion. For more information, please contact Julie Marks, Director of Counseling Services.
4th Grade News

Garden Coordinator Christine Brinkmann came to the 4th grade last Thursday to teach the students about the importance of corn during Colonial times.

She brought several different varieties of indigenous corn for the students to taste and touch. Students shucked popcorn off the cob and got to taste fresh popcorn. We even put an entire ear of popcorn in the microwave to see what would happen!
"Save It or Shave It" Fundraiser Results
By Holly Yelton, 6th Grader and We Act Club Member
Recently the We Act Club sold "Shave It Or Shave It' ballots to the school. Teachers and students signed up to either save the participants' hair or shave it, and then the students voted. Everyone was excited about it, and the teachers who volunteered were really getting into it. Mr. Denham posted signs up around the school reading, "Save The Stache!" Ms. Linkous got everyone's attention by dancing to "Whip My Hair" at Morning Meeting. All of the money from the ballot sale went to help provide clean water in Salabawek, a village in Kenya. We collected $156 total. The We Act Club tallied the votes and determined who would get their heads shaved. Finally, at an assembly on Friday, the people who shaved their heads were revealed. Everybody ended up shaving their heads, even Ms. Linkous! Both the school and the We Act Club thought that the "Shave It Or Shave It" competition was a lot of fun. A special thanks to...

Faculty and staff participants: Ms. Linkous, Mr. Donovan, Coach Butcher, Mr. Denham, and Mr. Gabhart

Student participants: Declan Keegan and Harrison Aberle

And parent Pam Jones for donating her time and styling expertise!
Learning Resource Center News
Avoid the summer slump! Summer Break is just around the corner! If you are looking for a way to keep your children academically engaged over the summer months, please consider purchasing Summer Solutions Workbooks. Each practice book contains 30 lessons along with Help Pages and an answer key for self-checking. The books can provide the necessary review and practice that allow students to retain important math and language arts skills. You can find more information, including sample lessons, help pages, and list of skills here. It is recommended that the students complete a lesson three times per week over Summer Break. There are a variety of workbooks to choose from. If you would like to place an order, click here. If you order by May 18th, the workbooks will come right to school and then into your child's backpack! Please contact Ann Mundt if you have any questions.

As you know, we opted to not have our children do the traditional door-to-door selling of products this year in lieu of simply asking each FAMILY to pay $50 in support of the PA. Therefore, if you have multiple children it is not $50/ child, just $50 for the entire family. I bet you spent more than that on wrapping paper and chocolates in the past!

If you are writing a check, please note in the Memo line that it is for Goshen PA dues and your child's name. If you believe you have already paid but it is not reflected in our records, please contact the PA Treasurers Tim and Melissa Patrick.

**Box Tops Reminder!**

Don't forget to check your household products for the pink label - Box Tops for Education. Each Box Top is worth $.10 which goes directly to the Parent Association end of year gift to the school. If you shop at Meijer's, please note the following:
