Today was Grandparents' Day and we had a fabulous turnout of over 50 grandparents join us for two classes and lunch.  What a treat all around - for the students to have the chance to share their day with these beloved grandparents and for the grandparents to get an all-too-rare glimpse inside a teenager's life.  Many thanks to all our parent volunteers who helped make the day possible.

Our tennis team has begun the season in exciting fashion!  More details on that in Tony Butler's athletic update.  We also had a fabulous finish to our Quick Recall/Governor's Cup season, finishing in the top 24 at the State Tournament last weekend, with Kinsey Morrison leading the way on the strength of a 4th place finish in Written Composition.

As noted in the calendar section, and as a sidebar, Alexandra and I are hosting Parent Coffees in April - 9th/10th grade parents on Thursday, April 10th and 11th/12th grade parents Wednesday, April 16th.  There's no set agenda; just the opportunity for parents to mingle with one another and also talk with with us.  We would love to see you there!

Next week is a short one, as we begin Spring Break on Friday.  I wish all of you a happy and safe (and warm-weather-laden) week!

Brisk temps and overcast skies prevailed as the Wyverns tennis teams played host to Moore High School at Crescent Hill Park on Tuesday afternoon.  Moore's numbers were down and experience level low, which gave us an opportunity to see what our new young Wyverns could do.  Matthew Siciliano '17, at #1 singles, had a methodical 6-0, 6-0 win with relentless play and a well-thought-out game plan. Carter Wooten '17, at #2 singles, stayed composed and focused while displaying steady strokes and great court coverage in his 6-1, 6-0 victory. 8th grader Tanner Dehler and 7th grader Angus Middleton, at #1 doubles, showed solid returns and well-placed serves in their dominant 6-0, 6-0 win. We are proud of the efforts of our underclassmen! When given the opportunity to play, they have stepped up and met the challenges with poise.

The girls also took the court in a three-game match, easily dispatching the Mustangs.  Lily Tierney '15 blew past her opponent in #1 singles, 6-0, 6-0.  Lucy Lv '16 played #2 singles and swept her opponent in 6-0, 6-0 fashion as well.  Talia Blue '17 and Emma Boland '17 continued their strong start to the season and completed the shutout 6-0, 6-0.

The girls were back in action on Thursday afternoon against Waggener.  The Wyverns came in with a 3-0 overall record this season and looked to extend it.  Lily Tierney started the day off at #1 singles.  After dropping the first set 1-6, she came back strong to capture the second set and tiebreaker 6-4, 10-8.  Esme Tyler '16 and 8th grader Shelly Lancaster easily won at #1 doubles, 6-1, 6-1.  Gracie Jones '15 and Anna Finkelstein '15 found victory in their first-ever doubles match together, 6-3, 6-1.  The Wyverns left with the victory and moved to their record to 4-0 overall.

Jamie Anderson '15 and Cole Von Feldt '14 embraced the role of assistant coaches as they helped guide and encourage their underclass teammates to a 4-0 win over Waggener.  The atmosphere was electric as our Wyverns received roars and cheers of motivation from the intense crowd of supporters.

Ben Weaver '16 at #1 singles was quite steady with his groundstrokes and serve in his dominant 6-0, 6-0 win.  Ethan Mackin '17, playing #2 singles, showed good court coverage and even better decision-making with his ground game in a 6-3, 6-2 win.  Matthew Siciliano and Andrew Thurstone '17 teamed to play #1 doubles and gelled together as a good one-two punch in a tight 6-2, 6-4 win.  Angus Middleton and Tanner Dehler, at #2 doubles, were awesome in winning their second straight match together with well-placed serves and pinpoint returns in a 6-1, 6-0 win.

Message from the PA President
Sarah Harlan Photo

Thanks to everyone who helped out with today's Grandparents' Day love-fest, and especially to Dianne Siciliano, 9th grade rep extraordinaire for coordinating all the moving pieces, and to Rhona Kamar and Ramsi's for the delicious lunch.

As you prepare for spring break (next week?!), I want to leave you with a few thoughts:

1)  There are two more big PA volunteer opportunities before the school year is finished--Pegasus Parade and The Great Annual Textbook BuyBack
2)  Parents of juniors--circle May 22nd and May 30th on your calendars--the senior luncheon and graduation--events where junior parents are often helpers
3)  Kroger cards, ValuMarket cards, Target RedCards!!  (you didn't think I'd forget, did you?)

The St. Francis Goshen Campus Drama Project proudly presents Shakespeare's The Comedy of Errors

"I to the world am like a drop of water  That in the ocean seeks another drop."  - Antipholus

Shakespeare's preposterous farce, the rollicking, high-speed Comedy of Errors, with its two sets of identical twins, each twin named the same as his brother, poignantly underscores our deep longing to find our true identity - a real partner to help define ourselves and share life's journeys.

The National Youth Arts Award-winning St. Francis Drama Project proudly presents this early comedy of Shakespeare at the Goshen Campus tonight, March 25th and 26th at 6:30, and March 23rd at 2:00 p.m.  26 Middle School students are cast, and the play includes all the best of Shakespeare: delightful couplets, foibled characters, mistaken identities, slapstick combat, chase scenes, and of course, a wonderful closing reunion.

Announcements
Staffing Updates from Suzanne and Alexandra
We have some exciting news and some sad tidings to share with you.  We are very pleased to announce that Trent Apple '92, who has been teaching two sophomore Culture and Civilization classes this year, will be joining us full time next year.  Trent is a historian and attorney by training (and a St. Francis graduate) who has been a valuable addition to the faculty this year, and we are thrilled that he will be with us more next year.

On the other side of the coin, we regretfully announce that English and Gender Studies teacher Barret Bell '02 will be leaving at the end of this school year.  Barret is following her heart and moving to Cincinnati in June to be with her partner.  We will miss her!  On a positive note, we have been absolutely inundated with incredible resumes and will begin interviewing next week.  We know we will find someone fabulous to join us in the English department next year.
Wednesday, April 9th
Wednesday, April 9th
is an All-Campus faculty/staff meeting at our Goshen Campus.  Because most Downtown faculty and staff will be leaving school at dismissal to attend this meeting, students are asked to make plans to leave the building by 3:30 p.m.
