Today is the final day of the third quarter.  Teachers will turn grades and comments in next week, and - per our usual practice - they will be shared with students and put online in NetClassroom for parents next Friday.

The Diversity Potluck this week was terrific - kudos to Sarah Moran and her committee of teachers and students for pulling this off.  The food was wonderful and varied, and the entertainment included the Lion Dance troupe, a Somali dance quartet, the Salsa Club, and the Bollywood dance stylings of Fiona Eden.  A fabulous time was had by all!

I hope many of you were able to see our Showcase of Plays last weekend.  I am always amazed at the writing and acting abilities of our students (and how they are able to whip a production into shape!).  This production involved over 30 students (or 20% of our student body!) in various roles (writer, director, actor, stage management, musician, lights/sound, program).  It was a fantastic production throughout.

Congratulations also to the tennis teams, who kicked off their seasons in fine fashion this week! Details are in Tony Butler's athletics article.

Angela Katz, our Spanish teacher who is a native of Ukraine, gave a presentation to the student body during our Meeting Period today.  The issues there are complex and layered, and Angela went back into Ukranian-Russian history to help illuminate the current situation for our students.

Enjoy the weekend!

Tennis

Both the boys' and girls' tennis teams have wrapped up their pre-seasons, moving into match play this week.  They opened with scrimmage matches at home against Eastern on Monday and at Stansbury Park against Manual on Tuesday afternoon.

The girls got off to a good start on Monday and were able to earn a split behind the stellar play of 8th grader Eva Borders, who won 6-0, 6-0 in #1 singles competition.  The freshman duo of Talia Blue and Emma Boland won in #1 doubles after falling behind 2-6, 7-6, 10-3.  Freshmen Shelby Luby teamed up with 7th grader Mary Claire Duncan to win the third doubles pro-set 8-2.  Shelly Lancaster, Lucy Lv, Meredith Fleming and Elise Pfeiffer were also in action on the day.

Fun, jubilation, fear, nerves and sunshine were the order of the day as the St. Francis boys' tennis team began their season in their scrimmage match against Eastern High School. Senior Cole Von Feldt, normally a part of our #1 doubles team, won at # 1 singles 6-0, 6-4 after surviving a fatiguing multiple deuce game early in the second set.  Freshman Carter Wooton and 8th grader Tanner Dehler, our #2 doubles team on Monday, rode good groundstrokes and strong net play to a 6-3, 6-2 win. This scrimmage gave us an opportunity to play some of our young players and they all were unfazed by the high school match stage while embracing the competition.  Matthew Siciliano, Alan Ziegler, Ethan Mackin and Angus Middleton were also in action.  Eastern won the match 3 - 2.

Against Manual, the boys and girls both played well but not quite well enough for the win.  Eva Borders continues to dominate at #1 singles, winning 6-0, 6-2.  Lily Tierney retired from her match after experiencing some sickness.  Junior Gracie Jones pulled out the win in #3 singles 6-3, 6-2.  The Wyverns were unable to win in doubles competition.  Esme Tyler, Shelly Lancaster, Emma Boland, Talia Blue, Rose Gilbert and Madeline Case rounded out the game

Gray Thurstone was visibly under the weather in his #1 singles match.  He and his opponent had the attention of the crowded park as their spirited match went back and forth.  Gray was able to eke out the win 7-5; 3-6; 1-0 (10-6). Jamie Anderson at #2 singles was solid off the ground in the long rallies and, using his powerful serve, dominated in a 6-2; 6-2 win.  Cole Von Feldt and Graham Cote returned to #1 doubles and showed a little rust but embraced the challenge and fought hard in a 6-2; 6-0 loss. Andrew Thurstone, Ben Weaver, Matthew Siciliano, Tanner Dehler, Ethan Mackin and Angus Middleton were also in action.

The girls traveled to play Butler at Shively Park on Thursday afternoon.  Eva Borders kept her winning streak alive, easily dispatching her opponent 6-0, 6-2.  Talia Blue and Emma Boland had an impressive victory, defeating Butler's #1 doubles team 6-1, 6-0.   At that point the Wyverns took a 2-0 match lead.  Lily Tierney, at #2 singles, had the longest match of the day but unfortunately could not pull it out.  Esme Tyler and Shelly Lancaster fell to Butler's #2 doubles team 2-6, 4-6.  The match was tied 2-2 and it was all up to Lucy Lv for the win.  She was able to pull out the first set 6-1, then struggled in the second before pulling it out 7-5.  What a season debut for the girls' team!

Attention all Imagine! volunteers:

What a wonderful event Imagine! 2014 was for the school - and we simply could not have done it without you!

Due to the crazy winter weather and other unforeseen circumstances, we are just now finally finishing up with our Imagine! event recap efforts.

We hope you can join us for lunch on Tuesday (3/18) from 12:00 -1:00 p.m. at the Downtown Campus for a thank-you luncheon and to discuss next year's event.  Yes... we are already moving towards next year.

I know some of you may not be able to make it, so if you want to ask any questions or provide any feedback, please don't hesitate to reach out to me (LIVE LINK) individually.  (Before the luncheon, if possible, so I can mention your comments with the others.)

AGAIN - from our chairs; Jane and Robin, and from Alexandra and the entire St. Francis faculty and staff - we can't thank you enough for your time and talents.  We hope you can join us on Tuesday!
