This week marked the transition from winter to spring sports.  Track and tennis practice are in full swing, with matches and meets beginning in March.  We celebrate the winter sports season for our basketball and bowling athletes next Tuesday night (please email Tony Butler if you have not RSVPed yet).  We did honor the basketball teams in Morning Meeting this week - girls on Tuesday and boys on Wednesday.  I said then, and firmly believe, that the basketball season is the toughest for student-athletes.  It lasts for four months, stretches over two major school breaks (during which the players continue to practice), and involves a significant amount of travel throughout the state.  The girls' season was not easy, and yet they hung in there, notched a solid win, played a number of other close games, and ultimately came together as a team and got better as individual players.  I think that counts as a success!  As for the boys, I said that there are three things for everyone to know about them as a team:  one, they ended with 14 victories, shattering the previous school record of nine; two, they finished with a .500 record, which is the first time that's happened in school history; and three, beyond these fabulous on-the-court accomplishments, the way I saw them treat one another and some Middle School players who joined them for a week late in the season to help round out a JV team was testament to who they are as people, not just players.  Our players were universally kind and supportive, not words often ascribed to teenage boy behavior, but exactly what we know at St. Francis they are capable of.  I could not be more proud of them for all their achievements this season.

Next week, along with the Winter Sports Banquet, we're back in action with community service on Thursday afternoon and it's "tech week" for our upcoming Showcase of Plays (student-written and student-directed), which will be performed March 7th and 8th.  Hope to see you there!

This Week in Wyvern Athletics

The boys continued their season through Winter Break, kicked off with a JV matchup at Portland Christian on February 14th.  Joined by four Goshen Campus students - Harrison Crawford, Chris Scott, Will Cole, and Connor Gorman - to fill out the squad, the team pulled out the victory.  On February 18th, the varsity took on Sayre and shocked them by taking the game to overtime before falling.  It was a terrific matchup and, despite the loss, a real statement for the Wyverns.  The JV finished its campaign with a win on the road against KCD on February 20th, to finish 3-1 on the year.  Then on February 22nd, the varsity took on Frederick Fraize at home in the final regular season game, attempting to avenge the three-point road loss from earlier in the season.  The Wyverns came away with a resounding 65-31 victory on the strength of 14 points each from Greg Hamilton '15 and David Borders '16.

Monday afternoon, the Wyverns opened district tournament play against Portland Christian.  After accruing a large second-half lead, the Eagles crept back into the game and took the lead with just a few seconds remaining.  Greg Hamilton made an amazing layup and was fouled.  He hit his free throw to give the Wyverns the lead and the victory.  On Tuesday, the Wyverns took on district powerhouse Manual.  While the Wyverns fell, it was not without a fight.  Len Adams '14 led the team with six points and five rebounds.  Greg Hamilton was named to the All-Tournament Team.  The Wyverns finished their season 14-14 - a school record for wins!

Bowling wrapped up as the break began.  Our three bowlers in the Individual Regional Tournament finished 23rd (Aliya March), 28th (Kinsey Emerson) and 33rd (Grace Riely).  The team finished the season in the City Tournament as the 15th seed and lost to Mercy in the first round.  Congratulations on a good season!

Looking Now for Host Families for the 2014-15 School Year!

Who Can Host?

One thing that unites all host families is a strong sense of the importance of cross-cultural understanding in today's world. Host families are curious, open-minded, caring, and willing to help a young student adjust and thrive in a new environment.

As A Host Family You:

  • Welcome a student into your home as a family member for ten months.
  • Provide a bed and bedroom (can share with same gender close in age)
  • Provide appropriate place to study
  • Provide three meals a day
  • Provide necessary transportation

Benefits of Being A Host Family:

  • Broaden someone's horizons - share all that your family, your community, and the U.S. have to offer a young person
  • Learn about the world - open your family's eyes to cultures and languages from all over the world
  • Globalize your community  - your student will bring the world to your community

If you are interested in becoming a host family, please contact Lucy Wathen for more information.

Message from Current Host Parent, Sarah Harlan

We were quite content with our own three children. But now that we've hosted Augusto and Simon, we all agree that sharing experiences with them, explaining so many things about America and Louisville to them, and discussing how the USA compares with their home countries has enriched all our lives far more than we'd expected. Now we'd consider our family incomplete without our Brazilian and German sons!

Announcements

Annual Diversity Potluck Coming Up!

The Diversity Committee is happy to announce that the annual potluck lunch is coming up on Thursday, March 13th. Each year, we ask students and families to send in  a dish that best represents their family, their culture, and/or their country - just their favorite dish! It can be anything, from soup to dessert. Our goal is to have enough food to provide a taste of lots of different things to all our students and staff for lunch, bringing all of us together over food -- and some entertainment provided by students.

Please send in a dish (just a recipe's-worth!), and if you have any questions, contact Sarah Moran (502.736.1037). Thanks!

Dishes from Faculty/Staff Appreciation Lunch
Thank you to all parents who contributed to the Faculty/Staff Appreciation Lunch before Winter Break! We have quite a few unlabeled dishes from the lunch and we would like to return them to you! If you brought a dish please email Emily to describe it and she will send it home with your student.

Our next big event is Grandparents' Day on March 21st. Don't worry--we'll give you a generous heads-up so you can plan on how you want to fete our St. Francis community grandparents.  Until then, keep using your Kroger, ValuMarket, and Target RedCards.  Don't have one?!  Pick up your Kroger and ValuMarket gift cards at school for a mere $5 each.  And if you use a Target RedCard, be sure to designate St. Francis as your beneficiary school.
