As we returned from Winter Break on Monday, one thing stayed the same, while another didn't: the stubborn cold weather persisted, but at least we had a five-day week!

During Winter Break, however, the action didn't die down entirely. Our Math Counts team was hard at work on both Saturdays of vacation. On the first Saturday, at our Downtown Campus, they independently took the challenging tests associated with the competition. On the second Saturday, they ventured to U of L to join all the other competitors in the Jefferson County Regional for results. We made quite an improvement from last year! There were 25 teams in the highly competitive field and we ended up in 11th place. An award for the top school performer was given to 8th grader Adam Prys, and Coach Kelly Bailey applauded the entire team's efforts at morning meeting on Wednesday. As always, our purpose in fielding academic teams is more about providing these highly motivated students with demanding intellectual challenges and "real-world" competition, rather than trying to rack up trophies. All of these students chose to work extremely hard during project time on Fridays (and on some weekends!) to attack complex math problems and they are to be commended! (See team picture above.)

Meanwhile, also on the first Saturday of break, 10 St. Francis teachers and staff came out to the Goshen Campus on a beautiful snowy morning to attain CPR and First Aid training from the American Heart Association. I think it is impressive that while we require our athletic coaches and outdoor trip leaders to have these credentials, several other teachers volunteered and gave up vacation time to benefit from this experience (and several more will gain their certification on the Downtown Campus later in March).  It is nice to know that we have 15-20 adults in our building who would be able to capably jump in should the unthinkable ever happen to anyone on our campus of any age. Kudos to Tina Brown, Sukanya Chandramouli, Misty Chanda, Lizzy Denny, Sarah Dewberry, Patrick Donovan, Andrew Frechette, Claudia McCrocklin, and Heather Varda for joining me that day!

Brrrrrr!!!!
Cold temperatures predicted for the first week of March have forced us once again to postpone our annual 8
th grade outdoor education trip to Big South Fork National Recreation Area. Our new dates are now April 23rd - 26th -- and we have assured the Class of 2014 they will go! Stay tuned for updates.

Merci Beaucoup!

A BIG thanks to parent Al Kirby for donating many hours of his time over Winter Break to shore up our Main Amp technical booth! Al reorganized our equipment to provide a more efficient flow and practicality, and he also rewired several components. He also cleaned the entire booth and it is now more user-friendly (and shiny too)! Your Comedy of Errors Spring Drama tickets are on us, Al!

Three Cheers for Lila!

Congrats to SFS Goshen graduate Lila Asher '11 who recently became eligible to become a Presidential Scholar! Lila is one of 47 students from the state of Kentucky who have been invited to apply for this distinguished designation. Go Lila!!

Art Show with Nita Duechle

Mike Prather and Nita Duechle announce Dual Show on March 7, 2014, at Oldham County Country Club

La Grange, KY - Oldham County artists Mike Prather and Nita Duechle are exhibiting their works of charcoal, oil paintings, and pastel landscapes on March 7th and 9th at the Oldham County Country Club in Buckner, Kentucky. Both artists live and work in Oldham County and felt like the country club was a great place to allow their friends, family, and art enthusiasts to come see what they've been working on the last few months. They are planning a great evening of art, music, food, and drink for Friday, March 7 at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, March 9th at 1 p.m. The show and the country club are open to the public, and all guests are welcome to experience the beautiful work produced by these two local talents.

K-1 Basketball wins St. Matthews Championship

Congratulations to the Kindergarten / 1st Grade basketball team who finished their season with a 8-1 record and won the K/1 St. Matthews League Basketball tournament last weekend!
The highly intense championship game went back and forth. With less than 10 seconds left and the score tied, the opposing coaches called a timeout that they didn't have, resulting in a technical foul (two free throws and possession of the ball for St. Francis).

In his first year of playing basketball, Ben Rutherford was called upon to take the shots. Bingo! Splash! Nothing but net on both shots to take the lead, and the Wyverns won 38-36.
Members of the K/1 team include Andrew Snyder, Micah Patrick, Lorelei Deitrich, IzzieMaki, Savion Butler, Cash Green, Quentin Johnson, Jude Sleadd, Ben Rutherford, Hunter Fleming, Tonya Amini, and Piper Kuhn. The team was coached by Tim Patrick, Nic Deitrich, and Keith Johnson.
St. Francis School Polo News

During Winter Break, 7th grader Angus Middleton and 6th grader Ford Middendorf, members of the St. Francis Polo Team, competed in the 32nd annual Avendano Memorial Polo Tournament at the International Polo Club in Wellington, Florida.

The "Avendano" is the largest and most prestigious  junior polo tournament in the United States and dates back to 1982.   Many of the best polo players in the United States made their tournament debut as junior players in this tournament.  Angus and Ford had a great time and enjoyed meeting and playing with some amazing young polo players.
