This week brought with it plenty of treats, chief among them today's Valentine-themed performance by Bob Bertke's music class.  The talent and enthusiasm of our musicians was on full display and they were rewarded by fervent applause from the rest of the student body.

For the faculty and staff, Wednesday's PA-sponsored Appreciation Lunch was another highlight.  Many, many thanks to all those who organized the lunch, helped serve, and sent in food.  We are truly grateful to all our parents for this wonderful day!  A big thanks also to parent Ken Kleiber who provided 15-minute massages for faculty and staff before and after lunch.

We dodged the snow today, thankfully, and fervently hope that spring will be approaching soon!   Wishing all of you a enjoyable Winter Break!

Bowling

The inaugural boys' bowling season came to an end last Saturday as the boys participated in the Region 4 Singles Tournament at Ten Pin Lanes.  Sam Edwards-Kuhn '16, (116, 147, & 148), J.D. Lanier '16 (135, 112, & 128), Ryan Petiprin '17 (90, 63, 155) and Forrest Wourms '16 (96, 106, 102) rolled three games, attempting to finish in the top eight to advance to the second round.  Alas, it just wasn't in the cards for the young Wyverns.  Our young Wyverns fought hard but too many splits and open frames and not enough strikes and spares got the best of them on this day.  Their growth was visible throughout the event, as players made approach adjustments and dot/arrow changes during the match.  Though they did not pull it off, their season was a success in many ways.

The girls' bowling team is preparing for their final event of the season.  The City Tournament originally scheduled for January 25 but cancelled due to weather will be played tomorrow morning at Fern Valley Strikes and Spares. This event will conclude their season.

Congratulations to both the boys' and girls' teams on a great season! Looking forward to next year.

Winter Sports Senior Night

This past Saturday, the Wyverns celebrated Senior Day for seven seniors and one exchange student at the boys' home basketball game against Robertson County.  The girls' basketball team has two seniors, Jessi Lowe and Kaitie Kramer.  Both students have spent the past two years at St. Francis. The girls also celebrated Fatima Ceballos, our foreign exchange student from Spain.  On the boys' side, three four-year players were celebrated: Kenny Gray, Len Adams and Cole Von Feldt.  Finally, we are proud to announce the celebration of the first four-year bowler in school history - Olivia Beres. Congratulations to all our seniors.  We wish you the best!

Basketball

The Senior Day game against Robertson County was in a rematch from earlier this season. Although the Wyverns came up short, they fought a hard battle and showed signs of improvement. Cole Von Feldt led the team with 13 points and eight rebounds.

On Monday, the Wyverns took on KSD in another rematch from earlier in the season. Once again, the team was victorious, routing the opponent 61-32.  David Borders '16 scored a career high 23 points, including five 3-pointers, and collected five rebounds. Jaylon Hall '17 had a stellar performance as well, with six points, 11 steals, and 10 assists.

The same night, the girls took to the court against KSD in a rematch of their match-up in December.  The Wyverns dropped the first game but were intent on getting some retribution.  St. Francis played tough in the first half but found themselves down 15-9 at halftime.  The Wyverns roared back in the second half behind an extremely stingy defensive effort, holding the Colonels scoreless in the third period while grabbing a slim lead.  They then allowed only two points in the fourth quarter to pull out an exciting 21-17 victory, their first of the season.  Gracie Edwards '16 and Jessi Lowe '14 led the charge, scoring six points apiece.  All the hard work has paid off for the 11 players on the team.

Tuesday, the boys' and girls' teams travelled to KCD to take on the Bearcats. Although the teams started strong, they weren't able to keep pace.  Stevie Mack '17 led the boys' team with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Spring Sports

Information about spring sports will be coming out via email.  If you have any questions or are not getting emails, please send an email to Tony Butler
and ask to be added to the email group.

Tennis is set to begin practicing over the break.  Returning Coaches Stephen Boyd and Ralph Marshall will be joined by Terri White to coach the teams.

Track and Field information is forthcoming.  We truly apologize for the delay in sending information but most of our track coaches also coach basketball, and their seasons are just ending.  We are working on the practice and meet schedules and that information will be coming out fairly soon.

Looking Now for Host Families for the 2014-15 School Year!

Who Can Host?

One thing that unites all host families is a strong sense of the importance of cross-cultural understanding in today's world. Host families are curious, open-minded, caring, and willing to help a young student adjust and thrive in a new environment.

As A Host Family You:

  • Welcome a student into your home as a family member for ten months.
  • Provide a bed and bedroom (can share with same gender close in age)
  • Provide appropriate place to study
  • Provide three meals a day
  • Provide necessary transportation

Benefits of Being A Host Family:

  • Broaden someone's horizons - share all that your family, your community, and the U.S. have to offer a young person
  • Learn about the world - open your family's eyes to cultures and languages from all over the world
  • Globalize your community  - your student will bring the world to your community

If you are interested in becoming a host family, please contact Lucy Wathen for more information.

Exchange student Simon Spengler with his "host brother" Joseph Harlan '14.
Message from Current Host Parent, Sarah Harlan

We were quite content with our own three children. But now that we've hosted Augusto and Simon, we all agree that sharing experiences with them, explaining so many things about America and Louisville to them, and discussing how the USA compares with their home countries has enriched all our lives far more than we'd expected. Now we'd consider our family incomplete without our Brazilian and German sons!

Click here to read Sarah's letter about her family's experience hosting two exchange students.
