WINTER BREAK - NO SCHOOL
Notes from Suzanne
Suzanne Gorman,
Head of Downtown Campus
 Head of Downtown Campus

I am in Chicago as I write this, at an ISACS division heads' conference. It has been a terrific couple of days, with sessions on a variety of topics, including the impact of stress on student learning and performance, cross-cultural communication, and the psychology of making decisions. I look forward to returning to school to process what I've learned and share it!

Last week, our seniors began the annual ritual of Senior Project presentations. These presentations are the culmination of nearly a year of work (the juniors are thinking about their topics now, with proposals due in before Spring Break). They are serious academic endeavors that ideally also evoke a student's passion and serve as a rewarding experience, in the end. Projects this year include research into topics ranging from sports to world politics; writing everything from poetry to novels to computer applications; studies of social norms; performances of choreographed dances and stand-up routines; and documentaries on power-lifting, skating, and action scenes. Presentations are nearly every day after school from now until Spring Break, and will be on display for all to see during our annual Student Art Show and Senior Project Showcase on Wednesday, May 7th. Mark your calendars now to join us for that event!

One final note:  as Tony Butler mentions in his article, tomorrow is Senior Day for the basketball and bowling teams. Festivities will occur between the boys' and girls' home basketball games, around 3:45 p.m. We have a total of seven honorees and would love as much support for them as possible. Please join us if you can!

Parents! Wednesday, February 12th at 8:00 a.m. will be the next Parent Discussion Group. An educator from Planned Parenthood will be here discussing adolescent relationships, safer sex, consent, and how to start/continue conversations around these issues.  There will be plenty of time for any questions you may have. Please join the conversation.  As always, bagels and coffee will be provided. I hope to see you there!

    This Week in Wyvern Athletics

The weather has wreaked havoc on the schedules for St. Francis Athletics this winter, particularly this week! Please see below for information on rescheduled events:

The girls' regional singles bowling tournament has been rescheduled to Friday, February 7th at Ten Pin, starting at 4:15 p.m.  The boys' tournament will be Saturday, February 8th, beginning at 9:30 a.m.Next Saturday, the City Bowling tournament for the girls will take place at Fern Valley.

Both varsity basketball teams will host KSD on Monday, February 10th at St. Stephen's Family Life Center.  Boys will open at 6:00 p.m., followed by the girls at 7:30 p.m.

In an addition to the schedule, the boys' JV basketball team will be playing at Portland Christian on Thursday, February 13th at 6:30 p.m.

    Basketball

This past Saturday, the both basketball teams travelled to Cloverport, Kentucky to take on the Aces of Frederick Fraize High School. After a good start to the game, the Wyverns faltered down the stretch, losing 56-53. While it was a close game throughout, the team failed to get momentum rolling in the second half and their late charge just wasn't enough to overcome the home team. Jaylon Hall '17 led the team in scoring with 21 points and Len Adams '14 tied a season high with four blocks. The loss brings the Wyverns' record to 10-9 on the season.

The girls' basketball team also took the court against the Aces on Saturday and fought hard but fell short. Jessi Lowe '14 led all scorers with 10 points, in what Coach Richard Butcher called "their best defensive effort of the season."

Senior Day for all winter sports athletes will be held this Saturday, February 8th.  The boys will open the event with a game against Robertson County at 2:30 p.m., followed by the girls taking on Jackson City at 4:00 p.m. Senior Day festivities will occur between the two games to honor Mariah Curtis, Jessi Lowe and Kaitie Kramer (girls' basketball), Olivia Beres (girls' bowling), and Len Adams, Kenny Gray and Cole Von Feldt (boys' basketball). Please come support the teams, and especially the seniors!

    Bowling

Last Saturday, both girls and boys competed in the team regional bowling tournament at Ten Pin Lanes.  On the girls' side, after the opening round of two four-person team games, we earned the 6th seed (of 8 teams).  In the next round, we took on 3rd-seeded Sacred Heart in the best of five baker matches.  We lost the first two games (138-102,161-108), but led most of the 3rd.  We were up 128-124 going into the final frame thanks to Gaby Melendez '16 closing both of her frames (a spare and then a strike) but were edged out by 8 pins in the 10th frame to lose 144-136, ending our team post-season run.

The boys began by bowling a 665 team score and entered the baker matches as the 16th seed against Seneca. The first and third games were particularly tough battles and the Wyverns stayed close but went down in the end.

Up next for both teams is the singles tournament.  The girls will open play on Friday night at 4:15 p.m. at Ten Pin Lanes in St. Matthews.  The girls will be represented by Aliya March '16, Kinsey Emerson '16, Grace Riely '15, and Bethany Strickler '17.   The boys' tournament will be played at Ten Pin on Saturday morning starting at 9:30 a.m.  Their team consists of Sam Edwards-Kuhn '16, Ryan Petiprin '17, Forrest Wourms '16, and JD Lanier '16.  This will mark the final event of the season for the boys unless they finish in the top four and advance to the state tournament.  The girls will participate in one more event, the City Tournament, which will take place on Saturday, February 15th at Fern Valley.  Times for that event have yet to be released.

    Tennis

There will be a tennis meeting for parents and team on Thursday, February 13th at 3:30 p.m. We are asking all parents to attend along with their athletes. All tennis team members must have an updated physical in order to begin practicing with the team.  Practice will open February 15th; all team members in town over Winter Break are encouraged to attend. Practice will be held from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. on the 15th. The week of Winter Break, coaches will be holding practices 3:00 - 5:00 p.m. All practices and home matches are held at Crescent Hill Park, near Mary T. Meager Natatorium.

Looking Now for Host Families for the 2014-15 School Year!

    Who Can Host?

One thing that unites all host families is a strong sense of the importance of cross-cultural understanding in today's world. Host families are curious, open-minded, caring, and willing to help a young student adjust and thrive in a new environment.

    As A Host Family You:

    • Welcome a student into your home as a family member for ten months.
    • Provide a bed and bedroom (can share with same gender close in age)
    • Provide appropriate place to study
    • Provide three meals a day
    • Provide necessary transportation

Benefits of Being A Host Family:

    • Broaden someone's horizons - share all that your family, your community, and the U.S. have to offer a young person
    • Learn about the world - open your family's eyes to cultures and languages from all over the world
    • Globalize your community  - your student will bring the world to your community

If you are interested in becoming a host family, please contact Lucy Wathen for more information.

Exchange student Simon Spengler with his "host brother" Joseph Harlan '14.
Message from Current Host Parent, Sarah Harlan

We were quite content with our own three children. But now that we've hosted Augusto and Simon, we all agree that sharing experiences with them, explaining so many things about America and Louisville to them, and discussing how the USA compares with their home countries has enriched all our lives far more than we'd expected. Now we'd consider our family incomplete without our Brazilian and German sons!
