***Winter Break February 17th-21st (NO SCHOOL)

This has certainly been a winter to remember (or forget?). And with Winter Break ahead of us after next week, I think we can all agree we truly need a "break" from winter!
On that note, I'd like to commend some hard working people this winter!
If you've come into our main amphitheater in the past month or so, chances are you've seen a large group of kids exercising, prancing around, doing calisthenics, or even stacking cups! As we slowly watch our new gymnasium start to take shape on our snow-covered grounds, our P.E. classes have had to take up residence in our main amphitheater and act as sweaty "greeters" to all guests entering the building. P.E. teachers Rosanne Conlan and Shavar Cowherd are to be commended for making the best of a difficult situation and continuing to find creative ways to keep our kids active, moving, and engaged. Whether it be plyometrics, aerobics, yoga, jump-roping, jacks (yes, jacks!), or even "What Does the Fox Say?", your children have been troopers and have adjusted in the resilient manner we strive to foster. Rosanne and Shavar have been wonderful role models and kept their "pep" and positive attitudes at a high level - but I bet no one is looking forward to spring more than these two!
At a recent assembly, we also recognized our basketball players and coaches. All of our players, teams, coaches, parents, and even bus drivers, are true "road warriors," who faced the unenviable task of playing every game "away" this season. We all know road games are tougher on athletes for a variety of reasons (just look at college results!), so this season has been a particular grind for all involved. But again, our kids have demonstrated their mettle and competed no matter the obstacles. While the results haven't always been pretty, the lessons learned will sink deep and only make them stronger down the road. And we can't wait for some "Blue and Red-Outs" next season to christen our wonderful new facility! "Wyverns Will, Wyverns Will, Rock You!"
PS - I hope to see you at our 4th Grade Play, The Jungle Book, next Thursday night too!

Congratulations to Paws with Purpose!

Please read the following email from Elaine Weisburg with Paws with Purpose.
After I shared it with the Middle School at Morning Meeting, the students and teachers applauded Paws with Purpose and The Community Foundation of Louisville for all they do and for inspiring students to give back to their community through service.
We are happy to hear this good news and to learn how SFS played a small role in providing the environment where these connections were made!
Hello to our St Francis Friends,
I just wanted you to know how much we appreciate the opportunity to work with St. Francis School. When you had the fall service learning fair, I had the opportunity to speak to the representative from the Community Foundation of Louisville who was also exhibiting. After I told her about Paws with Purpose, she mentioned the organization had $250,000 in grant money to award, with each recipient receiving a maximum of $25,000. The only catch was the grant was due in one week. Gabrielle Cecil, the Paws with Purpose training coordinator, and I got together with a volunteer and got our proposal turned in at about the 11th hour. In November, the Foundation representative made a site visit to learn more about the organization and how we would use the money. We were notified in mid-December that we would be receiving $25,000!!! Over 180 agencies applied for this grant money and we were one of 10 selected. They also had a Facebook contest for 10 days in January and the prize for the winning organization was $2,500. We won the contest I know with some votes from the St Francis community. This is money that will be used for us to apply for national accreditation with Assistance Dogs International. The accreditation process is very lengthy and time consuming, and this will allow us to fund the resources to help us with this journey. It certainly takes a lot of help and support for nonprofits to continue to make a difference. We thank you so much and we hope our dogs are making a difference with your students.
Kindest Regards,
Elaine Weisberg

PARENTS!!
The Middle School Student Council is sponsoring a drive to collect games to provide some post-assignment activities for our hard-working students
in Homework Hall! If your family has some gently used games (with all the pieces please!), chess or checker boards, decks of cards, backgammon etc., that are gathering dust in your closets, we would love to have them for our Homework Hall.
Please drop them off in the front office and we'll take it from there!
