We are wrapping up our "trial week" of the daily rotation/schedule we plan to implement in 2014-15.  I'm looking forward to gathering student and faculty feedback in the coming weeks, but initial reports are very positive.

We began looking at a new rotation over a year ago.  A and B weeks are frustrating for students and faculty alike (and parents!) and the existing rotation overall simply seemed inefficient, while also not providing sufficient time for some things that would enhance the overall St. Francis student experience - time to meet with teachers outside of class, have groups and clubs gather, etc. So we started to look at what a better use of our 35 hours per week might be.

Highlights of the new rotation include the following:

- No A and B week - it is simply a one-week rotation
- It is a "modified block" schedule.  All classes meet for 45 minutes on Mondays and Fridays; then on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, classes are an hour long and each class meets two of those three days.  The longer periods will allow for less time lost in transitions and more time in one sitting (great for everything from discussions to labs to essay tests).
- There are "flex" times added in four days per week, when no classes are meeting.  This week, we used them for things such as 11th grade college meetings with Kit Llewellyn, a 12th grade financial literacy seminar with Greg Borders, an extra help session for any interested Chemistry students, grade-level meetings, etc.
- Thursdays bring a "Project" period.  Our existing Music and Playwriting classes will move here, along with other fascinating offerings for students to choose from, so that they can explore some different interests outside the regular class structure.  For just the purposes of this week, teachers' projects included Russian Language and Culture, Cooking, Creative Writing, Woodworking, Fiber Arts, and more.

I'm excited about the possibilities this schedule will create; I think it will allow for an even better experience for our students both in and out of class.  We will be evaluating this trial week and refining aspects of the schedule over the course of this spring.

Look forward to seeing many of you at Imagine tonight!

Parents! Wednesday, February 12th at 8:00 a.m. will be the next Parent Discussion Group. An educator from Planned Parenthood will be here discussing adolescent relationships, safer sex, consent, and how to start/continue conversations around these issues.  There will be plenty of time for any questions you may have. Please join the conversation.  As always, bagels and coffee will be provided. I hope to see you there!

Basketball

The St. Francis boys played host to Portland Christian in the schools' only scheduled varsity meeting of the year on Tuesday night at the St. Stephen's Family Life Center.  After suffering a tough loss to Collegiate last Saturday in the semi-finals of the All "A" Regional Tournament, the Wyverns rebounded with a win.   St. Francis jumped out to a commanding lead before a competitive fourth quarter got the Eagles into striking distance, but the Wyverns proved too much in winning 62-50. Greg Hamilton '15 led the way with 21 points and six assists, while Len Adams '14 had a double-double, grabbing 13 rebounds to go along with 12 points. Jaylon Hall '17  continued his impressive play, scoring 15 points to go with seven rebounds.

The same night, the girls hit the road for a JV contest with Whitefield Academy.  While they fell short of the win, Coach Butcher's report was positive.  He noted that the girls "care about their play and are holding each other accountable. I am truly enjoying the watching the passion build with this group."  The final score was 30-18 with exchange student  Fatima Ceballos leading all scorers with seven points for the Wyverns.

On Thursday night, the boys played host to Bullitt Central.  Although the team fought hard, they ultimately came up short. Despite the score, the Wyverns showed toughness and resiliency, proving that they would not back down from any opponent.  Stevie Mack '17 had eight points and eight rebounds and Greg Hamilton added six points and eight rebounds to lead the Wyverns.

While the boys enjoyed the luxury of home, the girls were on the road for a JV contest against nearby Presentation.  Another tough contest for the Wyverns; Anna Finklestein led the way with four points.

The boys and girls are preparing for a Saturday afternoon trip to Cloverport to face the Aces of Frederick Fraize.  The bus will depart from the Downtown Campus at 11:00 a.m. for 1:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. (Central) game times.

Bowling

The St. Francis boys' and girls' bowling teams are preparing to begin the 4th Region Bowling Tournament on Saturday.  Saturday will be the team portion of the tournament.  The girls will start around 9:30 a.m., followed by the boys. The team's top bowlers will enter into the individual tournament later in the week.  The girls will bowl individually on Wednesday, February 5th and the boys will bowl on Saturday, February 8th.  The girls will be sending Aliya March '16, Kinsey Emerson '16, Bethany Strickler '17 and Grace Riely '15 to the event.  On the boys' side, Sam Edwards-Kuhn '16, Forrest Wourms '16, Ryan Petiprin '17 and JD Lanier '16 will participate.

Announcing "A Taste of St. Francis"!

The St. Francis Athletic Committee is pleased to announce the creation of a brand-new book that will bring together the whole SFS community in support of our athletic programs! This attractive collection of recipes, artwork, and poetry that celebrates all things St. Francis is titled, appropriately,"A Taste of St. Francis!" We are now soliciting contributions for "A Taste of St. Francis" from everyone in the SFS community which will be sold to raise funds to benefit athletic programs on both campuses in the coming years.

We need YOU!  Please submit your family's favorite recipe, a drawing, or a poem to us for potential inclusion in the "Taste of St. Francis".  We want students, parents, alumni, teachers, and friends of St. Francis to be represented!

Submissions requested by January 31, 2014.  Please send electronically to Cassandra Zimmerman.
