Two days off this week - one, in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the other, thanks to Mother Nature.  A bit more on both of these:

In recognition of the Dr. King holiday, last Friday a list was distributed in each Advisee Group of service and commemoration opportunities over the long weekend.  This week, we had a wonderful presentation in Morning Meeting.  The Diversity Committee and the Black Students' Association put together a PowerPoint with photos of and quotes from the likes of Eleanor Roosevelt, Gandhi, and of course Dr. King himself.  Many thanks to the students and to Sarah Moran and Penny Ridgdill for facilitating this.

Onto holiday #2:  I really cannot fathom how some of our students are wearing t-shirts around the school when I can't seem to stay warm no matter how many layers I have on.  Even Vermont transplant Sam Edwards-Kuhn, who wears shorts 99% of the time, has felt the need to put on long pants these last couple of days.  At any rate, Tuesday's snow day was our third this school year.  To answer the question I've heard from some parents, we do not intend to make up any of these snow days.  In the 14 years I've been at the High School, apart from the apocalyptic ice storm several years ago that had us closed for a week, we've averaged probably about one snow day per year - some years having none, some years having one or several.  We have a good number of days in our school calendar and a longer school day than many schools, and we take very seriously our instructional time.  Our feeling is that in general, parents and students like to have a set school calendar and that taking away days from Winter Break or adding days into June isn't particularly effective in educational terms. So we plan a school calendar each year that includes plenty of academic hours, and then let the weather do what it may.

Speaking of a set school calendar, you will see elsewhere in this newsletter the major dates for 2014-15.  Please note that we are going back to our long-standing habit of beginning earlier in August (we had gone to a later start the past two years, but prior to that it was the second full week of August).  This actually adds some extra days to the school calendar and, again, makes us feel confident in the number we have, whether next year brings a few snow days or not.

Two kudos to pass along:  First, to the varsity Quick Recall team, which won the Louisville Non-Public Schools Tournament last weekend!  They dispatched Providence (IN) and Collegiate handily in the first two rounds, meeting up with St. X - source of their sole loss in league play - in the finals.  In overtime, St. Francis won 32-29.  A big congratulations to team - Joe Harlan, Kinsey Morrison, Fiona Eden, Nina Erbes, Michelle Jones, and Tinsley Nugent.    Second, to the boys' basketball team.  They had a tough game against Williamsport last weekend, losing by four points.  Yesterday, Athletic Director Tony Butler received a voice mail from Williamsport's coach, who said he had never felt compelled to leave a message like this, but that we were a first-class program - players, coaches, fans - and it was a pleasure to coach against such a great program.  A few more points would have been nice, but recognition such as this is even better.

A note about next week:  We are running a new schedule, one we hope to implement in 2014-15.  It does not change school hours or anything external; it is a different rotation (no more "A Week" and "B Week") with some longer classes and some "flexible" time built into each day to allow for things like students seeking extra help from teachers, club or grade-level meetings, etc.  This is our "trial week" so we can see how it goes and what, if anything, we need to refine in order to implement it next fall.  I'll report back next Friday about how it went and explain it in greater detail.

This Week in Wyvern Athletics

Bowling

The boys' and girls' bowling teams are playing their final week of the regular season.  Early week matches were cancelled due to the inclement weather.  The teams have been practicing in preparation for the City Tournament that will be held tomorrow at Dixie Bowl.  This is the final tune-up tournament before the regional tournament starts next week.

The City Tournament matches all teams within the city limits of Louisville to see who is the best.  The tournament separates participants into seven team pools to seed the single-elimination tournament.  Teams bowl six bakers against all other teams in their pool, and their tournament position is dependent on how well they perform.  Once brackets are set, teams are eliminated round by round until only one remains.  This will mark the first season the Wyverns will participate in the event.

Basketball

The boys' basketball team took on North Bullitt last Thursday night at St. Stephen's. The Eagles commanded an early lead and never relinquished it in spite of a valiant effort by St. Francis.  After trailing by six at halftime, the Wyverns pulled within four, but turnovers and missed free throws proved fatal as they lost 56-42. Despite losing, the boys showed toughness and improvement and are showing signs of becoming a real team. Stevie Mack '17 had four points and seven rebounds along with a career-high nine blocks for the Wyverns, and fellow freshman Jaylon Hall added 12 points.

The Wyverns suffered another tough loss on Saturday, faltering down the stretch to lose on the road to Williamstown 67-63. Jaylon Hall had a season-high 20 points and Len Adams '14 scored 14 points to go along with eight rebounds. The loss drops the Wyverns to 8-6 on the season.  While it was a tough loss, the team was commended, via phone message from the opposing coach, for their great show of character.  He gave a glowing review of our team, coaches and fans at the game.

After suffering back-to-back losses for only the second time this season, St. Francis bounced back with a resounding victory in the first round of the All "A" Tournament against Brown. The game was controlled by the Wyverns from the opening tip until the final buzzer sounded, with a final score of 66-44. Jaylon Hall had another stellar game, scoring 18 points to go along with six assists and five rebounds. Greg Hamilton '15 added 17 points and Len Adams pitched in with 14.

All "A" Regional Tournaments are held throughout the 16 regions in Kentucky for the smallest 120 schools in the Commonwealth.  Regional champions will meet next week in Richmond, KY for the state tournament.  Up next for the Wyverns is a semifinal match against Collegiate tonight at 8:00 at KCD. Come on out and support the team as they look to get revenge on the Titans for a close loss suffered earlier this season.

The girls' team took on Christian Academy of Indiana last week.  After a slow start, they held CAI to only 11 points in the second half.  Mariah Curtis '14 was the team's leading scorer.  On Saturday, they hosted Beth Haven and got off to a great start, but fell behind midway through the second quarter and could not find a way to battle back.

The girls' All "A" Tournament matchup was also against Brown, and the team was looking for the win after losing by only four to Brown earlier in the season.  Unfortunately, Brown pulled out a second win against the Wyverns.

Next up for the girls is an away game at Atherton on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.  Come support our Wyverns!

All Wyverns - Please come out and support our seniors at Senior Night (afternoon!) on Saturday, February 1st!  We host Frederick Fraize at St. Stephen's.  Varsity girls play at 1:30 p.m. and boys tip off at 3:00 p.m.. Ceremonies honoring each team's seniors will be held prior to the start of each game.

Tennis

Boys' and girls' tennis sign-ups have taken place and uniforms are being ordered for the start of the season.  This year's uniform pack, as usual, will include shorts and two shirts. The total cost for the uniforms will be $65; please submit payment to Coach Butler ASAP.

The season will begin with practices on February 15 and over Winter Break.  Coaches Boyd (boys) and Marshall (girls) will begin with those available over the break to get a head start on the season.  The full practice/match schedule will be available as soon as dates are finalized.  All players should be prepared to practice or play five days a week with practices generally ending no later than 5:30 p.m.

Track and Field

Boys' and girls' track and field sign-ups are completed, and practice and meet schedules are being developed currently.  Please watch the Wyvern Weekly and emails for updates.

A Student Travel Tour

May 31 - June 11, 2014

St Francis School/Louisville Collegiate School

St Francis School has received funding that has enable us to lower the cost per student for this unique opportunity to visit one of the world's most dynamic and ancient cultures. A grant from the Confucius Institute allows us to reduce the cost to $3953 (exclusive of passport, visa and insurance) per participant. The last day for making a deposit of $500 is Jan. 31, so please send in your check as soon as possible. This is a rare opportunity for students to experience home stays, school visits and monuments, ancient and modern.

We invite students to join us on this adventure to see some of China's most exciting sites. In Beijing, we will tour the Forbidden City and Tian'anmen Square; climb the Great Wall at Jinshanling; in our sister city Jiujiang, students enjoy Home Stays with Chinese families. In Xi'an behold the Terra  Cotta Army and bike the City Wall. Learn martial arts, visit local markets, and meet Chinese high school students, try the regional culinary tastes of China; and be dazzled by the Shanghai Acrobats. These are among the many exciting happenings on the St Francis and Collegiate student tour of China, May 31 to June 11, 2014.

Also in the itinerary: Enjoy a Peking Duck Dinner, visit the Temple of Heaven and Tian'anmen Square;  make dumplings at a rural village; enjoy a pedicab tour of Old Beijing;  visit a cave village in Shaanxi Province; tour the Bell Tower, Big Wild Goose Pagoda and the Great Mosque; a dumpling banquet and puppet show in Xi'an; teach Chinese  students English as part of service activity in our sister city  Jiujiang.

The cost, including land and air fare, is $3953 per participant, based on double occupancy and a minimum group of 12 participants. This does not include passport or visa fees or supplemental medical or evacuation insurance.   For inclusions and exclusions, see the other side of this paper.
To book a student on a tour, a deposit of $500 is required.
You will need to book your air as early as possible, since airfares prices are notoriously fickle. For questions about the tour, please contact Chinese teacher Bob Jones at 502-736-1018 or email him at  bjones@stfrancisschool.org.    Included in this tour:

Parent Association News
Message from the PA President
Sarah Harlan Photo
Late last week I had the honor of completing my favorite task as PA President -- notifying faculty and staff that their grant requests were approved.  I get great satisfaction out of being the "fairy godmother" to the faculty and staff, but I absolutely could not play such a role without the support of the PA representatives and the entire parent community at our Downtown Campus.  Every time you reload a Kroger or ValuMarket card, write a check for dues, or volunteer your time for a PA event, you help make these grants possible.  So thank you, on behalf of our terrific faculty and staff, and me (and I'll skip the "bibbidi-bobbidi-boo" part!).

I hope to see everyone next Friday, January 31st, at Imagine!, our terrific scholarship fundraiser at the Henry Clay.

And one last reminder:  make sure you let your grade rep know ASAP about what you'll be sending in on February 12th for the Faculty-Staff Appreciation Lunch and how you will help out that day!!
