We're pleased our progress reports rolled out more smoothly this second quarter after working a few kinks out of the system!

I hope you've had a chance to share and discuss grades, comments, and effort/behavior marks with your children. And progress reports mean it is Effort Honor Roll time of course!

In analyzing the lists for this quarter, I noticed an encouraging trend. Every Middle School grade level increased the percentage of students included! This tells us that students, working with teachers and parents, made adjustments from the first grading period to bolster their effort upwards.

This is what we are striving for, students increasing their capacity to learn and gaining in metacognition. The list will be shared at this Friday's Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. assembly, and I wanted to remind you that the new stipulations for the year-end Elizabeth Archibald Effort Honor will consist of students making the Effort Honor Roll two out of the first three quarters AND the last quarter.

Congratulations to students (to the right) for excellent effort and dedication to their classes!

Robotics with First Lego League

Middle School Science
First Lego League is a robotics program for 9- to 14-year-olds that is designed to get children excited about science and technology -- and teach them valuable employment and life skills.

Started in 1998, founders have "a shared belief that FLL inspires teams to research, build, and experiment, and by doing so, they live the entire process of creating ideas, solving problems, and overcoming obstacles, while gaining confidence in their abilities to positively    use technology."

During the holiday break, our team competed in the regional FLL event. This is our second year of participation in this experience. Our team performed well with our highest score achieved by a presentation of how we used the FLL core values throughout our process.

I want to especially thank John Naber for bringing this project to our school and working with the team, as well as all the parents who contributed with their financial and hands-on support.

A special thanks goes to Tatjana Soldat-Jaffe for all her hard work to make the competition happen!

And of course, kudos to all our team members: Kyle Chandler, Matthew Isham, Chris Scott, Eli Jaffe, Caleb Hennessey, Matt Kurtz, Nico Orthober, Jack Plaxe, Theron Varda and Nate Waggener

Last week, 7th grader Olivia Zimmerman participated in the KMEA Fifth District Honor Band

Olivia is our first-ever Middle School student to audition into this prestigious group which features some of the finest musicians from this part of the state.

The band was conducted by Joseph Witkowski, music professor from Akron University, and they performed a fantastic program Saturday at at Martha Layne Collins High School.

St. Francis 9th grader Andrew Swan was also present as he auditioned into the high school All-District Symphonic Band.

Inaugural LISBL begins
St. Francis hosted the very first Louisville Independent School Basketball League games this past weekend at St. Stephen's Family Life Center. The league is a continuation of the Whitefield League that our SFS teams from 4th-6th grade participated in earlier this season. The boys' 6th grade team got off to a hot start, winning both of their games by double digits against dePaul and Portland Christian. The boys' 4th and 5th grade team lost to dePaul in their only game of the weekend, 21-16. In girls' 4th-6th grade action, the Wyverns were grinning ear to ear as they picked up their first win of the season, defeating Meredith Dunn 28-10. Games take place each Saturday with start times from 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. please stop by and root on the Wyverns!

Girls' 7th & 8th Grade Basketball
The girls are improving by leaps and bounds. They are scoring more points per game and are beginning to play tough defense. In their last game, against Anchorage, led by the hot shooting of Meredith Fleming, the Wyverns led for the majority of the game. The shooting cooled off a bit and Anchorage tied things up and began to pull away late in the fourth quarter.

Boys' 7th & 8th Grade Basketball
Over the holiday break, the boys took on St. Athanasius and captured a nail-biting
15-13 victory at the Mid-America Sports Center. Since then, the boys have faced strong competition from Anchorage and Collegiate. They have continued to give their best effort and are preparing for the final games and tournaments of the season.

MS Spring Sport Offerings and Sign-ups
The Athletic Department would like to get a head start on spring sports - lacrosse, track, and tennis - and wants to start compiling names of those students who may have an interest in participating. We would like to offer lacrosse to boys grades 4 and up. There will need to be at least 13-15 players to have a team. We have plans to fill two separate teams - one for 4th and 5th graders and the other for 6th-8th grade players, pending sufficient interest. The season should begin in early March. We did not get much interest on the summer participation forms, so we need to know now if there is indeed sufficient interest to have these teams.

We are also looking to judge interest in students playing tennis. The 7/8 graders will have the opportunity to play on the High School teams. Practice will be daily beginning in late February at Crescent Hill Park next to the Bubble. Students joining this team would ride Bus 1 after school to practices and may be picked up by parents after practices at the park. Practice times and schedule will be released soon, but team members should plan to practice until 5:30 or 6:00 p.m. daily.

We also need to gauge interest in track this year. Track is open primarily to 5th-8th graders, but also may be appropriate for some 4th graders. Practice will begin in mid-February and the meet schedule will be released soon.

If your child has any interest in participating on any of these teams, please email me and let me know. Thank you.
