Welcome back!  I hope you had a wonderful holiday break.

Wednesday marked the start of what is a longstanding annual Morning Meeting tradition at the High School - faculty and staff reading selections from "The Lives They Lived." This New York Times Magazine publication comes out the Sunday after New Year's Day and profiles people who have died in the previous year.  Some are well-known; others are not, but all are fascinating for various reasons.  Alexandra Thurstone started things off with Joy Johnson and I followed up on Thursday with Abigail Van Buren.  Teachers and staff will read another ten or so "Lives" selections in the coming days.

You all know who Abigail Van Buren is; Joy Johnson may not be as familiar.  Following is Alexandra's explanation:

Joy Johnson retired at age 58 as a PE teacher, having never had an exercise regimen herself, and took up running. She found she loved it so much that she became a marathoner, and then ran 25 consecutive NYC marathons, the last being this year at 86. When asked why she ran, she always replied because it made her happy, and because it helped her sleep better. She didn't do it to win, even though she often did in her age group; she really didn't care how she did. She always ran with a blue bow pinned to her hair and she also believed one should smile through the last miles, as there were photographers around and it's better not be caught with a grimace. In 2013, she took a fall at about mile 20 and had a bump/cut on her head. While those around her urged her to go to the hospital, she said she just wanted to finish "her" race, which she did. She also went to The Today Show the next morning to say hello to Al Roker, an after-race tradition. Then she went to take a nap, and passed away in her sleep.

Joy was not famous, nor remarkable, really. She was an ordinary person who made a change in her life after retirement that gave her a new focus and peace. Sometimes teenagers fear that high school is too late to try something new, and sometimes they focus too much on achievement and being the best at things. Joy is a wonderful reminder that it's never too late to make a change in your life, and that doing something because it makes you happy is an excellent reason to do anything.

Words to remember as we kick off 2014!

This Week in Wyvern Athletics

When we last reported on Wyvern athletics, teams had just cleared a rough patch of weather and returned to competition.  A lot has gone on since our last report on December 13, 2013!

Basketball

The boys' basketball team played host to Walden on that date.  A slow start led to a 16-13 lead for the Wyverns in the first half before St. Francis got things rolling in the second.  The Wyverns pulled away until in the game, winning their home opener 53-41.  The team had four players score in double figures, led by senior Len Adams' 11 points and 11 rebounds.  Fellow senior Kenny Gray posted eight points and eight steals. The following night, the boys traveled to Robertson County to take on the Black Devils.  The Wyverns didn't fare so well in their first true road test of the season.  They found themselves down a dozen after the first half, eventually falling 78-49.  They were again led by Len Adams with 18 points and nine rebounds.

After a week off from games for exams, the Wyverns were back in action at the Portland Christian Holiday Classic.  Their opening round game was a matchup against Walden, and the Wyverns were victorious 77-50, earning a championship berth against Brown. This was the first game of the season against the Bears, and St. Francis dismantled them 65-36. Junior Greg Hamilton and freshmen Jaylon Hall and Stevie Mack were named to the All-Tournament Team and Len Adams was named Tournament MVP.

The varsity boys' basketball team poses with their trophy after winning the Portland Christian Holiday Classic.

The boys played three more times over the break.  A road loss to Thomas Nelson followed the championship win.  They then defeated Covington Latin at home, with freshman James Risley leading the way on 6-8 shooting (18 points) from the 3-point arc. They closed out the holiday break with a win against Christian Fellowship to bring their record to 7-2. This leaves the Wyverns two wins away from tying the school record for most wins in a basketball season, accomplished twice (most recently in 2010).

The boys were halted by district opponent Shawnee last night in a game that was a few made shots away from making it a contest.  The Wyverns fell behind early and could not muster enough on the defensive end to keep the Golden Eagles at bay. However, they are back in action tonight at 6:00 p.m. at home against Collegiate, followed by a road trip to Burgin tomorrow.

The Wyverns girls' basketball team had their biggest improvement of the new season during a 21-17 loss to Brown just prior to the holiday break.  There was a real competitive spirit in the gym, as the St. Francis defense was much tougher than Brown had encountered during a preseason scrimmage.  The Wyverns were leading the contest at the half.  Senior Captain Jessi Lowe led the SFS offensive attack with 6 points, followed by junior Anna Finkelstein, who scored her first 5 points for the season.  Anna dropped in a 3-pointer and a well-timed jump shot to help the Wyverns challenge Brown until the end of the game.

The Wyverns tallied their highest offensive output of the season (with a breakout performance from exchange student Fatima Ceballos) thus far in their loss to Christian Fellowship over the break. They took on Shawnee in their first game of the second semester and battled hard. They play a JV game against Collegiate tonight at 4:30 p.m. at home.

Bowling

After an extended layoff, the bowling teams were back in action on Wednesday night.  The girls played host to Sacred Heart, and while they were a little rusty after having three weeks off, a few girls had good games.  Freshman Bethany Strickler bowled two consistent games and sophomore Aliya March nearly reached her personal best with a 144 in the second game. Junior Grace Riely had one of her highest outputs of the season with a 120, which included a turkey.

Upcoming Schedule

Parents - Happy New Year!  I would like to announce that we will be hosting two Parent Discussion Groups on Wednesday, January 15th with Rodney Poole, educator with Freedom from Chemical Dependency (FCD)! The morning group will begin at 8:00 a.m. in the Conference Room. The evening group will begin at 6:30 p.m. (Room location to be determined later based on number of responses.)

This is an important topic at a significant time in your adolescent's development. I hope that everyone will take advantage of this opportunity to learn more about drug and alcohol use and prevention, and to be a part of the discussion.  Rodney will be here Wednesday-Friday of next week providing education to all of the students (and at the Goshen Campus working with them on Monday and Tuesday).

Please RSVP for seating accommodations. If you forget to RSVP, you are still welcome!

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Looking Now for Host Families for the 2014-15 School Year!

Who Can Host?

One thing that unites all host families is a strong sense of the importance of cross-cultural understanding in today's world. Host families are curious, open-minded, caring, and willing to help a young student adjust and thrive in a new environment.

As A Host Family You:

  • Welcome a student into your home as a family member for ten months.
  • Provide a bed and bedroom (can share with same gender close in age)
  • Provide appropriate place to study
  • Provide three meals a day
  • Provide necessary transportation

Benefits of Being A Host Family:

  • Broaden someone's horizons - share all that your family, your community, and the U.S. have to offer a young person
  • Learn about the world - open your family's eyes to cultures and languages from all over the world
  • Globalize your community  - your student will bring the world to your community

If you are interested in becoming a host family, please contact Lucy Wathen for more information.

Message from the PA President

I hope everyone had a restful, family-filled break.  I know some of you were doing a stellar job using those Kroger cards--we brought in close to $500 from all that December card-reloading.  Keep up the good work!

Huge thanks to everyone who participated in the Staffulty Holiday Wish Fund.  The gifts were very much appreciated.

And speaking of Staffulty Appreciation, make sure you mark your calendars for February 12th--I know it's next month, but that's our annual Staffulty Appreciation lunch, where we provide our staffulty with a delicious lunch that they get to enjoy together with their colleagues.  Quite honestly, it's one of the highlights of the school year!  Watch your inbox for more info and the call to cook and volunteer in the next couple weeks.
