As this is our last newsletter for the year 2013, I'd like to give you a few of my impressions on our campus as we head into the holiday break.

It's pretty special to be a part of a place where students are excited about a field trip to a retirement home where they enriched the lives of others with songs and playing music (this past Monday). It's a little mind-boggling to work in a school where 7th and 8th graders spontaneously burst into carols at lunchtime and serenade the entire Multipurpose Room (as opposed to the typical teen angst we so often hear about). It warms your heart to see our 1st graders prancing around in pajamas and knowing that our families donated over 150 new pairs of pajamas to those less fortunate in our community. It instills confidence in our future that our Middle School students hound Kelly Bailey about the answers to questions on the Math Olympiad test they took this week. It is amazing that over 60 Middle School kids want to take on Shakespeare in the spring!

But most of all, we were given the best gift we could have possibly received last week when Kindergarten teacher Heather McGraw returned from her extende d absence to reunite with her adoring class-and come home to her second "family." This truly is a special community.

I wish everyone and their families the very best at this holiday time and look forward to more magic in 2014!

Spring Drama Auditions!

Hark! Shakespeare beckons! It's time for auditions for the SFS Drama Project's spring production, William Shakespeare's A Comedy of Errors! It's been four years since we tackled The Taming of the Shrew (which was our first show to win NYA Drama Awards!), and we are excited to expose our students to the legendary Bard once again. This production will be directed by parent Lon Church, an actor and drama teacher who is well versed with Shakespeare. Lon assisted Reed Gabhart with Harvey this fall, Reed will return the favor by serving as producer and assistant director for this production.

Here is Lon on this rollicking comedy, "One of Shakespeare's earliest plays, A Comedy of Errors is a full-blown farce taking place in the course of one day, and one of the most fun to perform, involving mistaken identities and slapstick physical humor, as well as moments of true tenderness as father seeks son, two twins seek their counterparts, and the characters must question their perceptions of what they think they know. The language is always rich and the speed of the highjinks creates a showcase for actors. And if all that weren't enough, all characters in this production may be played by either a boy or a girl!"

Auditions are open to all students in grades 5-8 and will take place next Monday, December 16th after school from 3:00-5:00 p.m. (a second day to audition and callbacks will be on Tuesday, December 17th at the same time). Students have been give audition forms (which parents need to sign) and role descriptions, and can pick up audition passages in advance. The show will be cast and the first rehearsal held next Thursday after school.

6th Grade Showcase and Quick Recall
Franky Wade
Middle School Science
This year, St. Francis had a team participate in 6th Grade Showcase (part of the Kentucky Governor's Cup competitions) for the first time.

Students were selected to compete in written assessments (math, science, social studies, language arts, arts and humanities, and composition) and Quick Recall against six other schools from our region.

The five Quick Recall matches were their first ever! On the written assessments, many students received awards ranging from 3rd to 6th place.

I am proud to say that our team won 2nd place in Quick Recall and 3rd place overall at the event.

Thanks to everyone for their support and dedication. The students did an outstanding job and look forward to future competitions. Way to go, Wyverns!!!

Lower School Choir and Middle School Band spread holiday cheer!!!
On Monday our Lower School Choir and Middle School Band members took their show on the road. Our musicians delighted audiences at Apple Patch in Crestwood and then traveled to The Forum At Brookside.

While there, they sang and played holiday music and invited the audience to sing and play along. They capped off their hard work with lunch at WW Cousins.

Girls' 7th & 8th Grade Basketball Success is not always measured by wins and losses. The girls are winning in so many other ways besides capturing Ws in the win column. They love each other's presence and as a result, team chemistry is at an all-time high. It has taken time, but the team now has a greater understanding of basketball concepts and game play. This bodes well for the future as they continue their progression.

Boys' 7th & 8th Grade Basketball

The 7th and 8th grade teams have continued to show improvements. Offensively, they are improving, as evident by the scoring output the past few games against Whitefield and Little Flock. The 7th grade team, which also consists of three 6th graders - Connor Gorman, Will Cole and Eli Jaffe - managed to make up a 14-point deficit at halftime to defeat Little Flock early this week. Will was sensational in the contest, pouring in a game-high 16 points for the Wyverns. The 7-8 team lost their battles with Whitefield and Little Flock last week but came roaring into Walden's gym last night to pull out a hand-fought victory. The 7th grade team was victorius against Walden as well.

Boys' 6th Grade Basketball

The 6th grade team once again stepped out of Whitefield League action and took on Christian Academy of Louisville. The Wyverns played very well from start to finish but could not overcome the size disadvantage in the post the Centurions had with a 6'0 player. The Wyverns will regroup for tourney play as they will play in the first round of the Whitefield League Tournament on Saturday at 9:05 a.m.

Boys' 4th & 5th Grade Basketball

The 4-5 boys' basketball teams' hard work has paid off and they have positioned themselves for a decent tournament run. Overall in league play both teams finished with two losses. The 4th grade team (5-2) placed second in league play and will open the tournament against Meredith- Dunn at 6:05 on Friday. The 4-5 team (4-2) earned a fourth-place finish and will open against KCD 2 at 7:10 on Friday. Both games are at Whitefield.

Full Tournament Schedule

4th Grade Team at Whitefield Quarterfinals Friday @ 6:05 p.m. Semifinal Saturday @ 12:20 p.m. Championship Saturday @ 8:00 p.m.

4th/5th Grade Team at  Whitefield Quarterfinals Friday @ 7:10 p.m. Semifinal Saturday @ 1:25 p.m. Championship Monday @ 5:00 p.m.

Girls' 4th-6th Grade Basketball

The 4th-6th girls will also wrap up their first half of the season in the Whitefield Tournament this weekend. The girls have really come on of late and have become a scrappy bunch that will not back down from anything. The Wyverns will take on KCD (at KCD) in first-round play at 9:05 a.m. Saturday.

Pajamas-Bring a pair, Wear a pair

Thank you to everyone who participated in the Pajama Day on Wednesday. The 1st grade collected 152 pairs of pajamas that will be given to the Cabinet for Health and Family Services in Louisville.

It was exhilarating for the children as they walked from classroom to classroom filling their sacks full of cozy goodies. Once they returned, they worked together to sort and bag the collection to make it easier for the agency. The classroom looked like a workshop filled with happy faces, hard workers, and a bit of static shock being passed around.

From the bottom of our 1st grade hearts, we say THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK  YOU!

All lost and found items will be put out in the Main Amp next week from Wednesday, Dec. 18th at 8:30 a.m.-Friday, Dec. 20
th at 11:00 a.m.

Anything not claimed by 11:00 a.m. on Friday will be donated.
