The Commons Room is the real focus of this post-Thanksgiving week!

On Monday, we unveiled some exciting additions.  To make it a more comfortable communal space for the students, we acquired ten beanbags and an iPod dock and rearranged some of the existing furniture.  One of the charms of St. Francis is that students do feel so "at home" all over the building.  But since the Commons Room is really there for their use all day, we would like to see it get more use. Judging from the initial reaction, these new items will be well-loved.

Tonight was to be the opening night of Picasso at the Lapin Agile in the Commons Room.  Director Rachael Dobring and her cast and crew have been rehearsing tirelessly the past several weeks.  Because of the weather, we made the decision to cancel tonight's performance.  However, tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m., the show will go on!  There will be a second performance added on Monday evening at 6:00.  The show is wickedly funny (written by comedian and actor Steve Martin) and should be an absolute delight.  Please join us!

Bowling

The St. Francis boys' bowling team looked to go into the Thanksgiving break on a strong note as they traveled to Fern Creek last week. The Wyverns started with a 345-333 victory in the first game.  In the second, they battled hard but fell short.  Luca James '16 posted career highs in both games.  St. Francis jumped out to a lead in the first baker game but lost in the 10th frame, losing the match overall.

The boys were back in action last Tuesday with a visit from Eastern.  St. Francis competed well and kept the baker games close, but fell to the Eagles.  Wednesday afternoon, they competed against Brown.  The #1 squad stayed even til the end of both games and the #2 squad came from behind but wasn't able to notch the victory.

The girls' team also played Brown on Wednesday.  They dropped three of the four match games, despite a personal best score from Bethany Strickler '17, going into the baker games 3-1.  The Wyverns rallied from a deficit to win the first baker game, with assistance from Kinsey Emerson '16, who bowled consecutive strikes in the 10th frame.  They repeated their victory in the second baker game, evening the match at 3-3.  They fell short on total pin count, 1,686-1,520, to lose the match.

Both teams faced Waggener on Thursday.  The boys faced a similar scenario as the girls had the day before, winning one of the four match games and then both the baker games, making it 3-3 and coming down to pin count.  Both teams had over 1,500 pins total and the Wyverns lost by 72 pins.  As one of the boys commented, "That was intense!"  This young team is definitely progressing and coming of age.   The girls notched their first victory of the season, winning all four of the match games, both baker games, and the pin count, for a 7-0 victory!  Aliya March '16 and Gaby Melendez '16 led the team scoring.

Upcoming Schedule

12/5 Girls and Boys @ Waggener  4:00 p.m.; 12/10 Boys Home v. Walden 4:00 p.m; 12/12 Girls Home v. Assumption 4:00 p.m., Boys Home v. Ballard 4:00 p.m.; 12/14 Boys @ St. X Tournament TBA

Basketball

The girls' basketball team kicked off the season with its home opener Monday night against the Greyhounds from Paris.  In Richard Butcher's debut as head coach, the Wyverns held their own.  The team started slow but gained momentum in keeping the final score respectable in a 39-13 loss.

The boys' basketball team kicked off the 2013-14 season with a bang, notching resounding victories against Evangel Christian on Tuesday night. In the varsity contest, the Wyverns rushed out to a 25-9 first-quarter lead and continued their prowess until the final buzzer sounded, conquering the outmatched Eagles 81-54. The victory was a particularly special one, as it marked new head coach Tony Williams' first career win, as well as St. Francis's first win against Evangel in its last seven attempts. Greg Hamilton '15 led the charge for the Wyverns, scoring 23 points to go along with nine rebounds and seven assists. Len Adams '14 chipped in with 18 points and 11 rebounds, and newcomer James Risley '17 added 15 (five three-pointers) in his first career varsity game. The JV team also prevailed against their competition, overcoming a one-point halftime deficit to defeat the Eagles 44-29. Jaylon Hall '17 had a stellar performance, dropping 18 points on the Eagles while snatching six rebounds and three steals.

Upcoming Schedule

Message from the PA President

Don't want to go out and buy eight different mugs and coordinating Heine Brothers gift cards to give to your child's teachers this year?  Who does?! Instead, let the PA do the shopping for you: contribute to the Holiday Wish Fund and show your love and appreciation for all our Downtown faculty and staff.  It's super easy:  write a check (any amount) made out to Andrea Melendez, aka Elf-in-Chief, and send it to school with your child.  Andrea will do all the shopping according to the faculty and staff's wish list.  With all your free time, go treat yourself to something special!  Please send checks in NO LATER than Monday, December 9th!!

Also, keep up the good work reloading those Kroger gift cards--almost $500 came back to the PA from last month's reloads--and that means more "extras" for our kids' classrooms!!

Announcing the Learning Resource Center at the Downtown Campus!

In August 2012, under the direction of Claudia McCrocklin, St. Francis School opened the doors to the Learning Resource Center on the Goshen Campus.  Beginning in January 2014, the LRC will have a presence on the Downtown Campus as well!  The following services will be offered:

- Standardized Test Preparation (PSAT, ACT, SAT) beginning spring 2014.  LRC tutor and St. Francis parent Audrey Morrison will lead prep classes prior to the standardized test dates.

- Subject-Area Tutoring.  Claudia and Terri White, High School Director of Student Services, are creating a list of tutors in every subject area who could meet with students after school/on weekends (and possibly even during free periods at school).

- Organizational Management Program.  Ann Mundt, who has been a full-time academic support teacher since the LRC's inception, debuted an organizational management program at the Goshen Campus earlier this year, and is now bringing it to the High School.  Interested students and parents should read The Organized Student by Donna Goldberg (an excellent project for over the holiday break!).  In January, Ann will meet with student and parent to set up an individualized organizational system. She will conduct follow-up meetings as needed to evaluate how the system is working and make tweaks if necessary.  Cost is $100 and scholarships are available.

-  Claudia will also begin writing the accommodation plans for all students with learning disabilities, and Claudia and Terri will work together to administer them and with teachers to implement them.

We are very excited to offer these additional services to our students!  Please contact Claudia or Terri with any questions.

We Act Fundraiser
The High School's We Act community service group is raising money to build a school in Haiti under the auspices of the Free the Children organization (www.freethechildren.org).  Each brick costs $20 and the school as a whole is $10,000.  The 11 student members of the group chose this as their globally-focused project and realize that it may take time to reach the ultimate goal, but little by little - brick by brick - they are committed to making educational opportunities possible for a group of children in Haiti.  One of their fundraisers is a Panera Night on Tuesday, December 10th from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the Panera on Bardstown Rd. in the Highlands.  Up to 20% of purchases will be given to the group and funneled directly to this project. Click here to view and print the flyer which must be presented when you order.  If you can, please stop by for dinner or some carryout and help support the High School We Act group in building a school in Haiti!
