Last week we all took part in the usual "magic" of Grandparents' Day for which our school, and especially our music department, is renowned! Our Multipurpose Room was packed as our Lower School students took us on a "Sentimental Journey" through classic American folk music, culminating with "Over the River and Through the Woods". And in addition to their fine voices, we were also treated to a swinging dance recreation of the Charleston! The Middle School students took us on a slightly different "journey," as we traveled in time through the decades from the 40s to the 80s. From Duke Ellington to ABBA(!), the fun (and history lesson) progressed through different musical eras. It was clear our grandparents (and parents a day earlier) enjoyed all the music and reminiscing about the memories these songs evoked. And the cherry on top is having it sung to them by their grandchildren in advance of this most familial of holidays.

Our music teachers, Kim Aberle and Bob Bertke, put a tremendous amount of time and care into these performances every year and it clearly shows. From the wonderful harmonies, dance steps, instrumentation, and narratives, and the joy on the students' faces, it is clear that our children receive a well-rounded and wonderful musical education. Kudos to them, and a BIG thanks to parent Al Kirby for providing us with last minute audio support! Enjoy the pictures below of the interactive classroom visits that occurred. We hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday!

Boys' 7/8 Grade Basketball

After a long Thanksgiving break without any practice and plenty of turkey, both boys' 7/8 teams took on Collegiate on Monday night. In each contest, it was evident that the teams were out of sync, as both lost. In recent weeks, the team has dealt with injuries and sickness from several key players, and it will certainly bounce back from these setbacks. Despite their recent shortcomings, the Wyverns have responded well when faced with adversity.

Girls' 7/8 Grade Basketball

Also coming off of the break, as well as not having games scheduled due to several cancellations, the girls also played Collegiate Monday and showed much improvement, although they were defeated. Coach Conlan applauded the team for improving against pressure defense and singled out Meredith Fleming and Mary Claire Duncan for their efforts.

Boys' 6th Grade Basketball
The 6th grade team has picked up things in the last few weeks, as in addition to playing their normal Whitefield league games, the Wyverns have stepped outside the league for extra games. Before the break, the team played a doubleheader against KCD and Whitefield in came up short in both games. However, in a Jamboree game held at the Mid-America Sports Center, they picked up a hard-fought 22-21 victory over St. Aloysius. Never willing to back down from any challenge, the boys took it upon themselves to play a 7th and 8th Grade Collegiate C team on Monday night. In spite of the substantial size disadvantage and the use of a larger-sized ball, the boys competed and played hard before suffering a tough 18 - 15 loss.

Boys' 4th & 5th Grade Basketball

Playing their best basketball of the season, the Wyverns recently had the daunting task of playing three games - in a row, one after the other. The team was successful in winning all three games and received key contributions from Harrison Aberle, Lars Barbercheck and Robert Boyd in all games.

We Act-Community Service Group

The High School's We Act community service group is raising money to build a school in Haiti under the auspices of the Free the Children organization.

Each brick costs $20 and the school as a whole is $10,000. The 11 student members of the group chose this as their globally-focused project and realize that it may take time to reach the ultimate goal, but little by little - brick by brick - they are committed to making educational opportunities possible for a group of children in Haiti.

One of their fundraisers is a Panera Night on Tuesday, December 10th from 4:00- 8:00 p.m. at the Panera on Bardstown Rd. in the Highlands. Up to 20% of purchases will be given to the group and funneled directly to this project. This flyer must be presented when you order.

If you can, please stop by for dinner or some carryout and help support the High School We Act group in building a school in Haiti!

Calendar Alert!!!

Due to the rescheduling of the Big South Fork trip for the 8th grade class to the first week of March (the 3rd through the 7th), we have also had to shift our Parent Teacher Conferences to the following week on March 13th-14th!

Please make a note of this in your calendars too!
