Head of Downtown Campus
Veteran teacher Tom Miron (as in, so veteran he actually taught Alexandra when she was a student here, although he will remind you he was extremely young when that occurred) is inevitably a daily ray of sunshine around the school, and this week, he's also involved in the top two things I want to tell you about.
Tuesday was the 150th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln delivering the Gettysburg Address, so Tom signed up for our daily Morning Meeting poem. At the appointed time (following all the announcements), he rose and proceeded to set the historical scene for us (dedication of a cemetery for soldiers killed in the Battle of Gettysburg). Following his explanation, Lexi Drexelius recited the Address itself. Fantastic performance by them both.
When not teaching history, Tom is our Quick Recall maven (ably assisted by Ron Garrett, Cia White, and Trent Apple). He took varsity and JV squads undefeated in league competition into a match with Trinity on Tuesday and left with the varsity's record still spotless. I personally think that any time our school of 150 emerges victorious in a competition against a school 10 times larger, it's cause for celebration. (Of course, to be fully accurate, I must point out that the Quick Recall varsity was only undefeated in official matches. as they were trounced by the faculty earlier in the season.) Both squads fell to St. X yesterday (the JV was tied until the final question!) in what they expected to be their toughest match of the season. The Quick Recall team works as hard as or harder than just about any extracurricular activity at St. Francis, with practices multiple days a week at lunch. (The words "cult-like" possibly have been applied to this.) It is truly one of my favorite activities at St. Francis to watch (and yes, spectators are welcome, as long as they are quiet!). Kudos to the team for all its efforts!
We all have so much to be grateful for, and for me, our students and the entire St. Francis community are definitely on the list. I wish all of you a warm and wonderful Thanksgiving - and to our Jewish families, a happy Hanukkah!

This Week in Wyvern Athletics
Basketball
Both the boys' and girls' basketball teams competed in our annual Wyvern Shootout. The sessions featured teams from Fort Knox High School, Brown School, KCD and Whitefield Academy.
The boys looked sharp a week after their first exhibition against Somerset. While the varsity team lost two close games, there was plenty to feel optimistic about. "After watching film of our first scrimmage (against Somerset), our guys really started to understand that the effort has to be constant, especially on the defensive end and I think we saw that this weekend," said head coach Tony Williams. Greg Hamilton '15 led the Wyverns in their first game against Whitefield Academy, tallying 12 points and nine rebounds, while Len Adams '14 posted 16 points and five rebounds in the following game against Ft. Knox. The JV also competed, notching a victory over Brown. Stevie Mack '17 had 13 points and six rebounds to lead the way, while Jabrell Moore '17 added six points, three rebounds and three steals. "We had a great turnout at the event and Coach Thurman and I would like to thank all of our fans who came to support the team," Coach Williams added. To show you support for the team, be sure to follow us on our Maxpreps.com site and like us on Facebook!
The girls' team is progressing. While they suffered losses in all contests, there were some bright spots. Coach Butcher praised guard Anna Finkelstein '15 for her toughness. Anna decided to join the basketball team following field hockey this season. Though she had never participated in organized basketball, Coach Butcher had a tough time replacing her for any extended period of time as she played well over 200 minutes during the event.
The basketball season officially kicks off December 2, when the girls play host to the Paris Hounds. The boys kick off the following night in a road contest against Evangel.

Bowling
On Tuesday, our young boys' bowling team looked to ride the momentum of their first win into our match against Male. Unfortunately the Wyverns were without their top bowler, Sam Edwards-Kuhn '16, for the match. St Francis' team #1 of JD Lanier '16, Ryan Petiprin '17 and Forrest Wourms '16 bowled respectable games in both team matches, with Ryan having the high game at 119. St Francis' team #2 of Charley Drew-Wolak '16, Nizar Kamar '17 and Jonah Goodman '16 played the Bulldogs tough. Nizar had the high game in this group and for the day with a 127. Both teams played better in the second games as team #1 increased their pin count by 83 pins and team #2 by 64 pins.
The girls' bowling team also took to the lanes against Male on Tuesday. The Wyverns got off to a slow start and many bowlers struggled that night. Aliya March '16 and Kinsey Emerson '16 continued to lead the team, averaging 109 and 113 respectively. Coach Word feels that the team is getting better, and the girls seem to be becoming more of a cohesive group and are cheering for and motivating one another.
Upcoming Schedule
11/26 Boys @ Fern Creek 4:00 p.m.
12/3 Boys Home v. Eastern 4:00 p.m.

12/12 Boys @ Ballard 4:00 p.m.
12/14 Boys @ St. Xavier Tournament TBA

Academic Team Competition: The JV Challenge On Saturday, November 9th St. Francis competed in the JV Challenge (the JV version of the Governor's Cup competition) at Atherton High School.
The teams competing were St. Francis, St. Xavier, Manual, St. Francis DeSales, Trinity, Highlands Latin, and Atherton. Students competed in Mathematics, Science, Arts and Humanities, Social Studies, Language Arts, Composition, and Quick Recall.
Each team was allowed three entrants in each category, and each team member could compete in three events. The top six finishers in each academic field were awarded medals, as were the top four Quick Recall teams, and the top three overall teams. The St Francis team members were: Rose Gilbert, Sam Borden, Andrew Swan, Lucy Lv, Sam Edwards-Kuhn, Carter Wooten, Zoe Koss, Rowan Megenety, and Jillian Morrison.
The St. Francis team did themselves proud, medalling in Mathematics (Sam Borden and Lucy Lv), Science (Sam Borden), Language Arts (Zoe Koss and Sam Edwards-Kuhn), Arts and Humanities (Sam Edwards-Kuhn and Rose Gilbert), and Composition (Jillian Morrison). In the quick recall tournament St. Francis finished second, defeating St. X, Trinity, and Atherton before losing in the finals to Manual. As a result of all the excellent individual results, St. Francis finished second as a team, behind Manual.
Coaches Tom Miron, Ron Garrett, and Trent Apple are very proud of the team, and would like to thank the parents of these great students for all of their help and support. |

We Act Fundraiser
The High School's We Act community service group is raising money to build a school in Haiti under the auspices of the Free the Children organization ( www.freethechildren.org). Each brick costs $20 and the school as a whole is $10,000. The 11 student members of the group chose this as their globally-focused project and realize that it may take time to reach the ultimate goal, but little by little - brick by brick - they are committed to making educational opportunities possible for a group of children in Haiti. One of their fundraisers is a Panera Night on Tuesday, December 10th from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the Panera on Bardstown Rd. in the Highlands. Up to 20% of purchases will be given to the group and funneled directly to this project. Click here to view and print the flyer which must be presented when you order. If you can, please stop by for dinner or some carryout and help support the High School We Act group in building a school in Haiti!
