Head of Downtown Campus
We had a fabulous Admissions Open House on Wednesday evening - many thanks to all who helped out! I was struck (as usual) by how amazing our students are. From their commentary on the panel to their turns as tour guides, they were articulate, self-possessed, and simply incredible advocates for the school.
On Thursday, the Red Cross came to St. Francis for a blood drive spearheaded by Jordan Lyons '15. Kudos to Jordan for his efforts in organizing this event. Tonight is our annual Taste of St. Francis/Senior Auction, and I hope many of you will join us! The auction is a fundraiser for the all-school Prom, and the overall event is a wonderful chance to enjoy a casual potluck event with other St. Francis parents. You'll see elsewhere in this newsletter a notice regarding next Thursday night, when a history presentation will be held here at the High School at 6:00 p.m. Barbara Perry is a noted scholar, author, and professor from the University of Virginia; she will be speaking about Rose Kennedy, following the recent publication of her book Camelot at 50: Rose Kennedy and the Creation of a Political Legend. All are welcome to join us! On the topic of presentations, some faculty have attended conferences recently. Alexandra Thurstone and Sarah Moran attended the annual ISACS Conference in St. Louis and enjoyed a variety of presentations, while Liz Minton took advantage of the annual conference of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics being held here in Louisville. Professional development is a priority for St. Francis School and we encourage teachers to attend seminars and conferences whenever a good opportunity presents itself.

This Week in Wyvern Athletics
Boys' Bowling
The weekend's Vype Kick-Off Tournament was a great eye-opener for our young boys' team. There were bowlers of every skill level on the 28 teams participating. The format was a five-man, three-game set and six baker games. We had the opportunity to bowl against Manual, Male, Ballard, PRP, Bourbon Co, Scott Co, Jeffersontown, East Jessamine, Fern Creek, and Central Hardin, to name a few. Our Wyverns never took a step backward as our first game was against a team of bowlers where four out of their five rolled over 200 with a high of 248, and the fifth bowler rolled a 197. WHEW !!!
The noise, body gyrations, and vocal levels after strikes and spares were aggressive and consistent but St. Francis stood strong with poise, composure and fight. Our scores did not indicate how we competed. We can see our pin counts increasing in the future because it was clear the boys were able to withstand the pressure of very experienced competition. Forrest Wourms '16, Jonah Goodman '16, Luca James '16, JD Lanier '16, Charley Drew-Wolak '16 and Ryan Petiprin '17 battled through the three-game set and ended on a high note in the baker games.
On Wednesday, we hosted Seneca in a tough match that saw us nearly pull out wins in one of the games and in the second baker, but ultimately suffer defeat. Then on Thursday, we traveled to Ten Pin Lanes to play Walden. We won two baker games and the total pin count, with Sam Edwards-Kuhn '16 rolling season team highs of 166 and 186.
Girls' Bowling
The girls' team also took part in the Vype Kick-Off event this past weekend. The Wyverns fought tough in this major event that featured 17 teams from the state. Though the Wyverns did not win, there were some impressive individual performances. Aliya March '15 was the Wyverns' highest scorer on the day, with games of 116, 111 and 131 for an average score of 119.3 overall. Grace Riely '15 also bowled well in three games. The girls represented St. Francis with pride to the end.
On Wednesday, the Wyverns played host to the Redhawks from Seneca and lost a close match 4-3. The team of juniors Jackie LeMastus, Zoe Brohm, Grace Riely and Gaby Melendez won their first match, with their compatriots Kinsey Emerson '15, Aliya March '15, Madison Ebel '16 and Catherine Dean '17 falling short. Ella Rennekamp '17 and Bethany Strickler '17 joined in during the second game, and again one SFS team won while the other lost. Tied going into the baker games, the Wyverns ultimately fell short. Aliya March ended the baker round with double strikes in the 10th frame.
Up next, the boys' and girls' teams will play host to the Bulldogs from Male at Vernon Lanes on Tuesday, November 19th at 4:00 p.m. Basketball The boys' basketball team took the floor for the first time this season in an exhibition event hosted by Fern Creek High School. The team was matched up against arguably the toughest opponent in the entire event, the Somerset Briar Jumpers, who finished as Regional Runner-Up (just one step away from the Sweet 16 State Tournament) in the 12th region last season. While the Wyverns fought and battled at every turn, they just did not have enough to get past the Briar Jumpers.
On this Saturday, November 16th, the Wyverns will host the 7th Annual Wyvern Shootout exhibition event at St. Stephen's Family Life Center. This is a round-robin event that pairs each team against all other participants in shortened contests. Each session is 3 hours in length, with the boys tipping off at 11:00 a.m. and the girls starting at 3:00 p.m. There are four teams in the boys' session and five in the girls'. Fort Knox and Brown will send both their boys' and girls' teams while Whitefield boys and KCD and Western girls' teams fill out each field.
This event started in 2007 as a way for teams to be have the opportunity to play against different styles of play and team dynamics in the same event. Below is the schedule for the event:
Boys' Division
11:00 Brown v. Fort Knox St. Francis v. Whitefield
12:00 Whitefield v. Brown St. Francis v. Fort Knox
