The unquestionable highlight of this week was our visit on Thursday from John Jeremiah Sullivan, author of our all-school summer reading book, Blood Horses.  (And before I go further, a shout-out to Charley Drew-Wolak, announced on Monday as winner of the annual Halloween costume contest for his "blood horse" costume!)

John Sullivan is an acclaimed author and essayist, and happens also to be a close friend of our own Trent Apple.  It was actually entirely serendipitous that we chose his book for summer reading and then hired Trent (who appears in Blood Horses) to teach sophomore Civ classes.  But with this conflation of events, we were able to lure John to visit St. Francis to talk to our students.  On Wednesday, he toured the school with Trent and had a number of encounters and discussions with students.  Then on Thursday, the entire school spent 75 minutes asking John questions and reveling in the answers.  It was an incredible opportunity, as he took the time to answer every question as fully as he could, and I think we all wished the time would last longer!  He then visited two of Brett Paice's English classes, as Brett also teaches John's book Pulphead in English IV.

The questions from the students were - as usual when we have a speaker - absolutely phenomenal.  John himself indicated several times that he was blown away by the way the students' minds worked and the level of their inquiries.  We faculty, of course, were thrilled when in answering questions he spoke of the amount of in-depth research he does for his books; the number of revisions he goes through in writing; the struggles he encounters in his work (and the only way through them being just that: getting through); and, most appreciated by our English faculty, the emphasis he places on construction of each and every sentence he writes, so that ambiguity is purposeful or nonexistent. It was a remarkable morning at St. Francis, to say the least.

Upcoming events:  Wednesday's Admissions Open House (please encourage families looking at high schools to attend) and Friday's Senior Auction/Taste of St. Francis. Please join us for this casual potluck event and help support our senior class in funding the all-school prom!

Bowling

The boys' and girls' bowling teams kicked off their seasons this week with an away match against Manual.  The boys had their work cut out for them facing the returning state champion Crimson, while the girls found themselves to be closer than expected to their opponents.

Thanks to all the parents who braved the raucous crowd to cheer on our team. Sophomores JD Lanier and Sam Edwards-Kuhn led the youthful Wyverns in the boys' match.  Though the outcome was not what the team wanted, it was a good learning experience.  The final match score was 7-0.

On the girls' side, sophomores Kinsey Emerson and Aliya March led the charge for St. Francis. Kinsey posted a personal best in scoring a 146 in the first game, and averaged a 127 over the two games.  Aliya picked up where she left off last season; as one of the more consistent bowlers, she scored 118/119 in her two games.  A tough fought first game saw the Wyverns fall just 21 pins short of the victory.  The final match score, 7-0, did not reflect the competitiveness of the contest.

Both teams will return to the lanes again on Saturday in the Vype Season Kick-Off at Fern Valley Strike and Spares at 1:00 p.m.

Next Week's Match Schedule:

Wednesday 11/13/13 v. Seneca at Vernon Lanes 4:00 p.m.

Thursday 11/14/13 v. Walden School at Ten Pin Lanes 4:00 p.m.

Additions to schedule:

Tuesday 11/26/13  v. Fern Creek at Fern Bowl 4:00/4:15 p.m.

Monday 1/13/14 v. Fern Creek at Vernon Lanes 4:00/4:15 p.m.

Basketball

The boys' and girls' basketball seasons are just around the corner.  The boys are scheduled to participate in an exhibition event at Fern Creek tomorrow.  Coach Tony Williams is excited to see what his team can do against outside opponents. Though the team will be short-handed, with a few key players out, he is looking for a competitive contest.

The Wyverns will face Somerset, with the game scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. tip-off.  Somerset will be a great challenge for the young Wyverns, as the Briar Jumpers advanced to the Sweet 16 last season as Champions of the 12th Region.  The Wyverns' 2013 roster is highlighted by senior Kenny Gray and junior Greg Hamilton.  St. Francis also has a talented freshman class led by Stevie Mack and Jaylon Hall.

On November the 16th, the Wyverns will host the 7th Annual Wyvern Shootout exhibition event at St. Stephen's Family Life Center.  This is a round-robin event that pairs each team against all other participants in shortened contests.  Each session is 3 hours in length, with the boys tipping off at 11:00 a.m. and the girls starting at 3:00 p.m.  There are four teams in the boys' session and five in the girls'.  Fort Knox and Brown will send both their boys' and girls' teams while Whitefield boys and KCD and Western girls' teams fill out each field.

This event started in 2007 as a way for teams to be have the opportunity to play against different styles of play and team dynamics in the same event.  Below is the schedule for the event:
