 Head of School

As some of you may know, I am a member of the ISACS Board of Trustees, and have been since 2008.  In addition, I am the Treasurer of the Board and a member of the Executive Committee.    If you are not familiar with ISACS, it stands for Independent Schools Association of the Central States.  There are 24 members of the ISACS Board of Trustees, and ISACS represents more than 230 schools in the 13 states of the Midwest region ("central states").  ISACS is the Midwest affiliate of NAIS, the National Association of Independent Schools, of which there are some 1,200 member schools throughout the U.S. and abroad.

One piece of very exciting news that was just announced is that we will have a new President of ISACS in July 2014 and it is a woman for the first time:  Claudia Daggett.  Claudia has been the Executive Director of the Elementary School Heads since 2008. She has also served as an independent school consultant with Gregory Floyd & Associates, focusing on executive search, governance, strategic planning, and leadership transition planning.  Equally exciting is the fact that Claudia was the Head of School at Friends Academy (a Progressive school) in Massachusetts for 11 years, so we will have an ISACS President who is very familiar with Progressive schools.  Previously, she was the Head of the Lower School at Cape Cod Academy, the Assistant Head of School at Tenacre Country Day School in Massachusetts and the Assistant Head of Lower School at Garrison Forest School in Maryland. She began her work in Independent Schools teaching at two ISACS schools in Wisconsin: Armitage Academy in Kenosha and the Prairie School in Racine, WI, which is Claudia's hometown.

The ISACS mission is to promote the development of strong learning communities characterized by high achievements, social responsibility, and independence of governance, programs, and policies.  This goal is achieved through a rigorous accreditation process, targeted professional development programs, and focused support services.

As the mission indicates, ISACS has two major areas of focus:  accreditation and professional development.  In order to be an accredited member of NAIS, a school in the Midwest has to go through the ISACS accreditation process.  The process involves a seven-year accreditation cycle  that includes (in various years of the cycle) a Constituent Survey; a Self-Study Report;  a Visiting Team to the School, which is a group of educators from ISACS member schools who evaluate a School on whether the School is delivering on its Mission and whether the School meets the ISACS standards of membership; and several additional reports on behalf of the School that deal with whether we are following through on the recommendations we received in our Visiting Team Report.

Serving on a Visiting Team for another school is a wonderful professional development opportunity, and many of our faculty and staff have served on teams.  This fall, Head of Downtown Campus Suzanne Gorman served on a Visiting Team, as did Athletic Director Tony Butler.  In addition, I try to add new names to the list of those able to serve on teams each year.

ISACS does an outstanding job of professional development for its member schools.  Every year the association puts on an Annual Conference, which this year is next week in St. Louis (last year it was in Louisville and our faculty and staff were able to attend), and brings in some of the leading experts in the field of education to keep us up to date on the latest thinking worldwide.  Kim Aberle from the Goshen Campus, Sarah Moran from the Downtown Campus, and I will be attending the conference.  Kim Aberle will be presenting a session at the conference geared towards early childhood and elementary teachers, librarians, and music teachers how to marry music and childrens' literature. Unfortunately, due to the fact that not many Independent Schools have Preschools, the conference is not as strong for our Preschool faculty, so Renee Hennessy and Karen Hopkins will be attending the NAEYC (National Association for the Education of Young Children) conference in Washington, DC.  In addition to attending the conference on Thursday and Friday next week, Sarah, Kim and I will spend Wednesday afternoon visiting former St. Francis Goshen Head of School John Delautre's new school in St. Louis, Whitfield Academy, which is a grades 7-12 Progressive School.  We are looking forward to seeing John and learning more about the progressive education at Whitfield, as well as the speakers we will hear from at the conference!

Congratulations to Jillian Morrison '17, recipient of the YMCA Youth Character Award. She was honored at a ceremony held on Thursday, October 24th at the Hyatt Regency, and she was the youngest among the 12 award recipients. The YMCA Youth Character Awards are an opportunity to recognize teens throughout our community who are incorporating the Y values into their lives, demonstrating exceptional leadership and standing as examples to those around them.
Congratulations to Paige Pence '16, who won her open training division on October 20th in the Hagyard Team Challenge at Kentucky Horse Park!
Congratulations to Abas Isgowe '14 and Kenny Gray '14 who were selected for the Soccer All-District Tournament Team, and to Fatima Ceballos (exchange student), who was selected for the Field Hockey All-District Tournament Team.
Each spring, students on the Goshen Campus in 4th - 7th grades take a standardized test called the Stanford-10. The test evaluates student achievement in areas such as reading, language, spelling, math and science. Students who score at the 95th percentile or higher on at least one approved subtest of the Stanford-10 qualify for enrollment in both the Duke Talent Identification Program (TIP) and the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth (CTY) Talent Search. Once a student has achieved this score on the Stanford-10, he/she can choose to move forward and try to qualify to attend online and/or summer courses by scoring high enough on an above-grade level standardized test like the SCAT or SAT. We want to congratulate those students who met the criteria for the first step of admission to these prestigious programs.

Downtown Campus:  Picasso at the Lapin Agile

Friday December 6th and Saturday, December 7th, 7:30 p.m.

This long-running Off-Broadway absurdist comedy places Albert Einstein and Pablo Picasso in a Parisian cafe in 1904, just before the renowned scientist transformed physics with his theory of relativity and the celebrated painter set the art world afire with Cubism. In his first comedy for the stage, the popular actor and screenwriter plays fast and loose with fact, fame and fortune as these two geniuses muse on the century's achievements and prospects, as well as other fanciful topics, with infectious dizziness. Bystanders, including Picasso's agent, the bartender and his mistress, Picasso's date, an elderly philosopher named Charles Dabernow Schmendimen, and an idiot inventor introduce additional flourishes of humor. The final surprise patron to join the merriment at the Lapin Agile is a charismatic dark-haired singer time-warped in from a later era.

"Highly credible and... very funny. The subject matter is daring... You get giggles in plenty [and] moments of enlightenment... The introduction of the final, exquisitely selected visitor from the future is a master stroke." - New York Post

"Consistently entertaining." - New York Daily News

"Very engaging... Martin sends ideas onstage in baggy pants, with a cigar... mix[ing] the sublime with the ridiculous [so] that they can't be easily disentangled... Very good fun." - The New York Times

"A major treat." - Newsday

The 2013-14 Annual Fund

For those in the St. Francis community who have already given to the 2013-14 Annual Fund, we thank you so much for participating and contributing to the school!  Your contributions allow us to continue to do all the things that make St. Francis School so amazing.  You may already know that 100% of our faculty, staff and trustees have already given this year.  We also have 98% current parent participation on the Goshen Campus and have a great start at the Preschool and Downtown Campuses, both currently at over 70%.  As we wrap up our current parent drive, I know those percentages will grow, getting us closer to our 100% parent participation goal.

For our supporters outside the walls of the school, we are beginning our Fall Annual Fund push this month and you will be hearing from us soon. Please feel free to return the enclosed envelope you will receive in either the Wyvern Report due out soon or the Annual Fund fall letter near the end of the month.  You can go online anytime to  to make your contribution immediately.  On behalf of our faculty, staff, and students, we appreciate your continued support!

Winter Sports Preview

Fall sports are now officially over (except for our lone cross-country runner, who competes this weekend) and the change in weather brings the recurring bounce of balls in gymnasiums across the country.  St. Francis has a number of teams playing in various leagues around the community.  From the kindergarten/1st grade team to high school varsity, basketball is one of the most highly participated-in sports at St. Francis.  Following is a breakdown of the teams, coaches and leagues.

Varsity Basketball

There is a lot of excitement around the boys' and girls' varsity teams, and new coaches for both! Tony Williams, former Doss High School and University of Louisville standout, heads up the boys' team.  Coach Williams played overseas for a decade before he settled back in his hometown to raise a family.  On the girls' side, Goshen Admissions Director Richard Butcher is coaching the girls..   Coach Butcher spent a decade in Washington D.C., and prior to that coached professionally in Australia, at the collegiate level at University of California-Irvine, and in various high schools on the West Coast.

Both boys' and girls' basketball teams play in the Kentucky High School Athletic Association against other member schools. The girls open at home against Paris on December 2nd, with the boys beginning on the road against Evangel on December 3rd.  The first home doubleheader, with both boys' and girls' games, is December 13th, with the boys playing Walden at 6:00 p.m. and the girls taking on West Jessamine at 7:30 p.m.

Players huddle to cheer at the end of the basketball clinic led by the varsity basketball coaches and players.

Middle School Basketball (7th and 8th grade)

Our Middle School basketball teams play a full interscholastic schedule from early November through mid-February.  Shavar Cowherd heads up the boys, with assistance from Curtis Davenport, while Rosanne Conlan heads up the girls with assistance from Cassandra Zimmerman.  Both boys' and girls' teams will take their show on the road for the 2013-14 season as the Goshen gym undergoes renovations.  They open at dePaul on November 12th and end their season in late January with the Our Savior Lutheran tournament.

Whitefield Elementary School League

This league is for girls in grades 3-6 and boys in grades 4-6.  These teams actually begin interscholastic play in this independent school league that offers our teams comparable competition.  All teams at this level are practicing; the season has already begun for the boys and will begin this coming weekend for the girls.  If you would like your child to participate, please contact Shavar Cowherd at scowherd@stfrancisschool.org.  The Whitefield League runs October-December and ends with a tournament.  After the holiday break, St. Francis will run a league in January and February for these age groups with the schools from the Whitefield League at the St. Stephen's Family Life Center.

Tyson Gorman and Tim Fogarty co-coach the 6th grade boys' team. Shavar Cowherd and I co-coach the 4th and 5th grade boys' team, which plays on both the 4th and 5th grade levels during the season.  These teams also play games at Mid-America Sports Center and will take part in a number of tournaments. Teresa Saborsky and Shannon Ragland are co-coaching the girls' 3rd-6th grade team.  This team, depending on overall participation, has the opportunity to play at the 3/4 grade level or the 5/6 grade level.

Varsity boys' basketball coach Tony Williams led a clinic for 3rd-6th grade students.

St. Matthews League

All boys through 3rd and girls through 2nd grade have the opportunity to play in this league.  The cost per child is estimated at $100 and sign-ups are taking place at this time.   Practice begins in mid-late November with games beginning in January.  All events are held at Waggener and Ballard High Schools.   If you would like your child to participate, please contact Shavar Cowherd at scowherd@stfrancisschool.org.

Teams on these levels are generally divided once the athletic department has a good estimate on which students will participate.  Coaches in this division are Tim Patrick, who coached the kindergarten team and the girls'  2nd-4th grade team last year; Gammon Wood, who coached the 1st grade boys' group last season; and Byron King, who coached the 2nd grade group last year.  We also welcome Nicholas Deitrich to this staff to assist Coach Patrick this season.

Bowling

The other winter sport for St. Francis is Bowling.  The girls' team returns for its fifth season as a varsity sport at St. Francis.   We welcome a new coach to the helm for the 2013-14 season - biology teacher David Word, who was previously the assistant coach for varsity soccer.  The boys' team is in its inaugural season and will be led by longtime SFS tennis coach Stephen Boyd.  The teams will play their home matches at Vernon Lanes once again this season.  Matches kick off on the road November 5th against Manual.

The Importance of Play

By Renee Hennessey
Preschool Director

Earlier this month I had the privilege of attending Bernheim Forest's "Children At Play" conference, and presenting our Preschool's journey toward a natural playground concept. Currently, we are the only early childhood program in this area committed to a project like this.  I was thrilled to hear about a community play group in the Portland area (in Louisville) that has introduced nature into their outdoor play areas.  As well as projects created by the children, Jefferson Memorial Forest has also created their first certified outdoor classroom, which is now open to the public.

The presenter that I most enjoyed meeting was Rusty Keeler, author of Natural Playscapes: Creating Outdoor Play Environments for the Soul.  He wrote the book that inspired some of the conceptual ideas for our playground.  It was very inspiring to hear about his work around the world, designing natural play spaces for children.  The phrase that he used to describe what playgrounds can be really struck me: "Introductions to the planet." This is a beautiful way of looking at outdoor play for children, and exactly how we feel about the environment we want for our preschoolers.  Rusty challenged us to reflect on our own experiences of playing outdoors as children, and to use these experiences to guide the planning of their play spaces.

Another powerful moment for me was watching clips from the documentary "Play Again" that followed six children over the course of a year. The children in the film discuss how they spend their days, and it was astonishing to me to learn that they, in keeping with the national average, spend 90%of their time indoors.  I couldn't believe the physical transformation these children made after a year in a free-play study.  You can view the video here

.

The event concluded with a visit to Bernheim's Children Play Garden led by Claude Stephens, Facilitator of Outreach and Regenerative Design.  If you haven't had a chance to visit the play garden, please do so this fall.  They are doing great work out there and I know our Preschoolers and older siblings will love it!

If you are interested in reading more about the "Children At Play" conference, please check out the Bernheim website  and search for the Children At Play Initiative.

Alumni News

Alumnus Devin Emke G'84 '88 was the first speaker brought back to Louisville for a new pilot series of programming: "Kentucky to the World." This series is offered in partnership by IF University and Louisville community leader and international quilt expert Shelly Zegart, who is also a St. Francis alumni parent.  Thrivals Founder and University of Louisville Professor Nat Irvin sat down with Devin for 90 minutes to discuss life on "Saturday Night Live," influences, and his relationship to music. Devin has over 20 years audio engineering experience including recording, mixing, and editing of music and post-production audio for video. He received the 2008 Award for Technical Excellence and Creativity (TEC) for his work on SNL. After graduating from both campuses, Devin moved to New York to attend NYU, and he's lived there ever since.  He is still close with many of his Wyvern friends who also live in New York.  He is married and lives in Brooklyn and is one of the co-founders of our "Wyverns in New York" gathering.
