Head of Downtown Campus
Thank you for joining us for Parent-Teacher Conferences last week! While these are our only formally scheduled conferences, please know that we are always glad to hear from you with a concern or question.
One general pedagogical question that a couple of our math teachers have been addressing with parents is in regards to the "flipped classroom," and I thought all parents might be interested in learning more about that. The concept of a flipped classroom has been gaining traction in educational circles, and is being utilized in some math classes here at St. Francis. The idea simply "flips" what the students do at school and what they do at home. In a traditional model, during school time, a teacher explains concepts and demonstrates concepts, and then students practice these (homework) at home. In a flipped classroom, the explanation and demonstration is done via videos, which students watch online. Then during class, they practice what they've learned, with the teacher there to hone in on problems and provide further explanations and assistance. It's a simple theory, and, I think, not too dissimilar to when students read an English or history assignment so that they can come into class and discuss ("practice") it to solidify their understanding. As a school, we do not hop on the latest and greatest pedagogical approach, preferring instead to trust our fabulous faculty to evaluate the ways in which they might teach and choose the one they think will best serve our students. At the moment, in several math classes, the flipped approach is just that.

We invite students and faculty to join us on this adventure to see some of China's most exciting sites: in Beijing, we will tour the Forbidden City and Tian'anmen Square, climb the Great Wall at Jinshanling, enjoy home stays with Chinese families, behold the Terra Cotta Army, and bike Xi'an's City Wall. Learn martial arts, visit local markets, meet Chinese high school students, try the regional culinary tastes of China, and be dazzled by the Shanghai Acrobats.
