Earlier this week at Morning Meeting, I had the privilege of announcing our Effort Honor Roll for the first quarter. I always enjoy recognizing students for this accomplishment and there is a palpable buzz before the names are read. This year I asked the students if they could define the criteria for getting on the EHR, and it took a few volunteers before it was defined correctly, which is having a score between 1 and 1.5 inclusively when their effort marks are averaged together from ALL their subjects. This means their overall effort must be balanced between "exceptional" and "good" in every area across the board. Students begin asking me shortly after progress reports reach home when the Effort Honor Roll will be announced, and I can see pride in our students' faces (and a few barely suppressed smiles from our older kids!) as they stand to receive their acknowledgement. One eighth grader let out a big sigh of relief as his name was announced near the end of the list!
This year around 60% of our Middle School kids achieved the 1.5 or below effort average necessary for making the list, which shows it is no "gimme," but certainly attainable. Basing our honor roll on effort and not grade attainment is a longtime St. Francis tradition that recognizes our students in terms of their desire and willingness to learn rather than just pure grade achievement. As many of us can probably recall from our days in school, earning As is simply not the same task for everyone. St. Francis has always stood behind the premise that honoring a child's effort towards learning is a more pro-social and meaningful acknowledgement than just honoring academic achievement, in which the playing field may not be level. Effort allows for children of all academic abilities to demonstrate their desire to learn and be a productive part of a learning community.
We have addressed in prior newsletters and to the students, due to our move to the quarter system, we have changed our criteria for making the Elizabeth Archibald Effort Honor Roll, which is recognized with a certificate at our end-of-the-year Assembly. To make the year-end honor roll (named for a long-time St. Francis Goshen teacher and administrator with whom some of us had the pleasure of working), a Middle School student now must make the effort honor roll three out of four quarters, with the fourth quarter being mandatory. This allows for students who miss any of the first three a chance to set new goals and strategies to aid in attaining this accomplishment, while also stressing the importance of finishing strong-an important life lesson for sure!
Congratulations to all our Effort Honor Roll Middle School Students for all their hard work and success. Please see the sidebar for the list of students.
Feel free to email me with any comments, questions or suggestions.

5th grade Field Trip to Frankfort
|
The 5th grade class recently took a field trip to Frankfort, KY to visit our state Capitol.
In addition to seeing the exquisite marbled Capitol building and the legislative rooms found within the Capitol, we had a special impromptu visit with a Kentucky Supreme Court Justice, William T. Scott. He was very excited to talk with our group and explain the cases he had deliberated earlier in the morning.
Additionally, the 5th graders went to the Old Capitol building, where they had a mock voting session in the Senate. Jimmy Lancaster was the President presiding over the debate, a few of the kids were senators, Audrey McClain was the Secretary, and the rest of the class was the taxpayers "visiting" and listening to the case. This hands-on activity really stuck with the kids and helped solidify their understanding of the legislative process. Lastly, the kids had a quick visit to the Thomas D. Clark Museum and saw many artifacts from the Civil War to present-day. The kids especially enjoyed walking the Governors' Portrait Hall, and learned that Martha Layne Collins was our first and (as yet) only woman governor.
This was a very educational field trip and one that will likely be repeated with Mrs. Varda's future 5th grade classes.

Claudia McCrocklin, Learning Resource Center Director
|
The first quarter is over and you may be saying, "If my child could just get organized, I think school would be so much easier!" Well, the Learning Resource Center is here to help! Mrs. Mundt has developed an individualized organizational workshop to help students in grades 4-8 find an organizational strategy that will work for them. Here is how it works:
1) Parents purchase the book The Organized Student by Donna Goldberg, and both parents and student read the book.
2) Parents and student schedule an hour to meet with Mrs. Mundt to discuss the book and organizational options.
3) Parents and student gather the materials for the new organizational plan.
4) Parents and student schedule another one-hour meeting with Mrs. Mundt to put the plan into practice.
5) Mrs. Mundt meets with the student weekly to monitor his/her implementation of the organizational plan.
Here is what one student said about his experience participating in the organizational workshop: "At the beginning, I was really unorganized and ticked off and thinking this was a waste of time and then I got good grades in every single class and never missed homework. So then I knew it really worked and it wasn't actually a waste of time; it was a huge help." And here is what his mother reported: "The organizational workshop was a valuable series of meetings that made homework much more manageable and school much less intimidating. I'd recommend the program to anyone who struggles with disorganization. It's a simple set-up and follow-through process which has fostered self-esteem and independence for my child." The cost of the organizational workshop is $100. If you are interested, simply fill out the enrollment form, send it to the LRC, and Mrs. Mundt will be in touch to schedule your first meeting!
If you have any questions, please contact Claudia McCrocklin.
