First-quarter grade reports should (by the time you read this) be posted online.  As a reminder, we are on a quarter/semester system and calculate grades and write comments for students four times per year.  GPAs and credits are calculated by semester, so these first-quarter grades are really just progress reports indicating where students are at this point in the semester.  As I told the 9th graders, the purpose of these grades and comments should be to assess whether things are working.  If they like what they see, great - keep it up!  If not, then in order to see something different in December at the end of the semester, a change needs to be made.

A word about the reports themselves:  Please pay at least as much attention to the personal comment as to the grade.  Letter grades themselves can't tell the full story.  Comments are where you will see what kind of effort is going into the work of the course, and whether the grade represents a hard-fought achievement or a half-hearted wave at the material.

This week, we saw the revival of a very popular event from last year: "Choice Conversations".  The brainchild of alum parent and Board member Bob Klingle, Choice Conversations bring interesting, passionate, accomplished people from the Louisville community to St. Francis to have lunch with 25 or so of our students (who sign up on a first-come, first-served basis, with 10 of the spots reserved for seniors).  Speakers tell the students about their life's journey - personal and professional - and then answer questions.  Last year's guests included businesswoman Alice Houston, Humana CEO Mike McCallister, businessman and athlete Chuck Harmon, and Lt. Governor Jerry Abramson.  Yesterday's speaker was Dr. Jay McGowan, President of Bellarmine University.  His humor and frankness resonated with the students, and he stayed twice the allotted time to talk further with students who were free after lunch.  Many thanks to Bob for continuing to spearhead this program and to Dr. McGowan for giving us so much of his time.

I look forward to seeing many of you at conferences next week!  While this is the only scheduled conference time of the year, please know that teachers are always available to converse or meet with you to discuss your student's progress (as am I, of course).  Don't hesitate to be in touch with us.

Soccer

The regular season for the St. Francis soccer team ended last week.  This week marked the start of the 25th District Tournament.  The Wyverns finished the regular season with a district record of 0-1-1 and opened play against Central in a rematch of the match that ended in a 2-2 tie.

The Wyverns came out strong in the first half, amassing several shots on goal but not finishing off opportunities. Abas Isgowe got the scoring started with a beautiful header off a corner kick from senior Jose Zapata. Not long after the door was opened, Abas netted his second goal in the half with a left-footed rocket into the inside of the post, off an assist from Riley Gregor. The Wyverns took a 2-0 lead into halftime and felt confident they could close out the game in the second half.

In the second half, Abas completed his hat trick with another assist from Riley. Jamie Anderson and Mohammed Alwan finished off the scoring for the Wyverns.  The St. Francis defense played solidly throughout the game, limiting Central to just five shots and helping keeper Kenny Gray to his first shutout of the year in the 5-0 win.

For the championship game against Manual, starter Gray Thurstone was forced to sit with an Injury that occurred the night before.  While ailments also limited the minutes of several others, the team rallied and put forth perhaps their most complete effort of the season. Led by Kenny's inspired goalkeeping (racking up 20 saves on the night), the defense held the Crimson scoreless in the first half.  Despite giving up two tough second-half goals, the team never slowed and maintained solid pressure through to the end. The team was buoyed by the incredible fan support we received on both nights (even outnumbering host team Manual), and by finishing up as District Runners-Up, the Wyverns earned a spot in next week's Regional tournament, beginning with a match against St. X.

Field Hockey

The Wyverns played host to Seneca on Wednesday in their final home match of the season.   After giving one away on Senior Night last week, the seniors were inspired to come back and win one for the crowd.  In an earlier match this season, St. Francis managed a shutout of the Redhawks 8-0.  This meeting was much the same as the Wyverns jumped all over Seneca, repeating the 8-0 final score. Seven players netted goals during this match.  Their play showed true teamwork and selflessness on the field. Madeline Case found the back of the net twice, and Kate Jones, Eliza Jay, Fatima Ceballos, Zoe Koss, Anna Finkelstein, and Alma Herovic all scored.

On Thursday night, the girls traveled to Eastern for their final match of the season.  The team fought tough against solid competition but fell short in the end losing 3-0.  The score did not reflect the equal level of play in the game. Despite tremendous play, especially from our defensive players and goalkeeper Natalie McClain, we could not hold them off.   The soccer team took the night off from practice and came to support the field hockey team.  In the words of a field hockey parent, " The girls did not win yesterday, but they got something more, better, and longer-lasting than a win:  they got the soccer team cheering them on, showing school pride and demonstrating what family really is."  Go Wyverns!

Up next for the Wyverns is the District Tournament.  St. Francis will face off against Presentation on Tuesday night at 5:00 p.m. at Manual's Sarah Baker Field.

Parents - The next Parent Discussion Group is Friday, November 1st at 8:15 a.m.  We will be discussing the Madeline Levine book Teach Your Children Well. I still have copies of the book in my office.  Please let me know if you would like to borrow one. Levine introduces the idea of helping children achieve "authentic success" and the culture of stress for children and adolescents in our society today.  She gives important developmental information and clear ideas of how to help your teenager achieve "authentic success".  You don't have to read the book to join in on the discussion. If you would just like to read the portion of the book that is applicable to adolescents, that is an option as well.

Please join in the November discussion.  Would love to see you there.
