It has been an especially busy two weeks on the Goshen Campus. In the past ten days, we've had our last Parent Coffee (Middle School), two Parent Nights for both sides of the building, Spirit Week, and Spirit Day yesterday! (Look for some good pictures from these events below.) Both Parent Nights had good turnouts and we hope you received useful information about what units of study your child will undertake this year and a glimpse into our wonderful teachers' methods and routines. Meanwhile, regular lessons continue unabated as we have really settled into the daily flow of school life.

On that note, a "new" routine is our implementation of the quarter system instead of trimesters this year to align us with the Downtown Campus in progress reporting. As such, believe it or not, we have reached our first "interim" report date (previously referred to as "midterms"). You will receive a link via email next week to access your child's interims. A change this year is that in Middle School, not all students will receive grades at interims, as there are now eight reporting dates. Only students who are having academic or other difficulties in grades 5 - 8 will receive interim grades and comments. It is more of a time to alert parents to issues so strategies can be put into place to help students improve before the end of the quarter. However, as in the past, all NEW students in grades 1 - 8 will receive narrative comments from all their teachers detailing how they have transitioned into St. Francis academically and socially.

Also, "spirit" has been flowing this week (pardon the pun!). The kids have fully embraced the opportunity to dress up in different ways to demonstrate their Wyvern spirit and "raised the roof" at our Spirit Assembly Thursday afternoon. I think our ears are still ringing.

Finally, as we are now a month in, our always-wonderful artwork is now starting to adorn the art wing. Please don't hurry by it as you pass through the hallways! Take a minute to admire the wonderful pieces
(on the sidebar) your children are creating under the watchful and patient care of our fabulous Art faculty (and be sure to also see the beautiful creations the Chinese classes are making outside Ms. Zhu's room too!). They always brighten my day!

Service Learning at the Goshen Campus Kicks Off with the Fall Service Learning Forum
On Monday, September 23rd from 9:00-11:30 a.m., a variety of local organizations will set up shop on the Goshen Campus in the Main Amp to share information with students, teachers, and parents. We will learn about organizations' missions and what students, classes, and families can do to help.Parents from all campuses are invited to attend. The Fall Service Learning Forum will provide students with powerful models for service and built-in partnerships as all grade levels begin planning their service learning projects for the year. Many thanks to the organizations participating in this event!

Quick Recall

St. Francis School is developing a Middle School Quick Recall team that includes 7th/8thgraders, as well as a 6th grade team for the 6th Grade Showcase.

Quick Recall is an academic game in which students are asked challenging questions from the following areas of study: math, English literature, humanities, history and science. A Quick Recall team needs at least six participants, but we are hoping to have more. Students who play on the 7th/8th grade Quick Recall team should be available to scrimmage against another school's academic team after school 5 or 6 times total in the late fall and winter. We are currently scheduling scrimmages for two dates in October, and three dates in November, with a possible date in December.

Students who try out for Quick Recall generally have strength in one of the subject areas and help their team answer difficult questions in that subject. Quick Recall is similar to the game show Jeopardy, and many schools have had great success in organizing a Quick Recall team. Many schools go to the Governor's Cup in January and February and scrimmage against fellow public and private schools. The students love participating in this event. St. Francis School will take students to the Governor's Cup this winter if we have enough players' commitment and interest in Quick Recall. We will also take some students recommended by teachers that are recognized as strong in a certain subject area to take a multiple-choice test, called Written Assessment, in the Governor's Cup.

Quick Recall practices for the 6th grade team will be held on Tuesdays during lunch and recess and coached by our new science teacher Franky Wade, with help from Heather Varda and Pattie Koth. The 6th Grade Showcase Written Assessment test and Quick Recall scrimmaging for the Governor's Cup is scheduled for Saturday, December 7th, location TBD.

Quick Recall practices for the 7th/8th grade team will be held on Wednesdays during lunch and recess and coached by Heather Varda and Patrick Donovan. The Written Assessment and Quick Recall test for Governor's Cup is held on Saturday, January 18th, location TBD.

There will also be an elementary Quick Recall team coached by Misty Chanda for 4th and 5th graders. Details for that level will come in an email to parents with children in those grades. 5th graders will compete in Elementary Governor's Cup in February and March.

We hope your child will consider this exciting new academic offering!

Thanks to everyone who came to our first PA meeting last week, with a special thank you to our guest speakers Siofra Rucker and Emily Essex. During the meeting it came to our attention that not everyone knows what the Kroger Card program is, so I want to explain how it works and how it benefits the school.

  • You purchase a $5 Kroger Card from the school. They can be purchased in the office and we will sell them at various  school events throughout the year.  You can not purchase one at Kroger or anywhere else! This card looks and operates just like gift card. It's preloaded with $5 which is why we charge $5.

  • You will obviously spend more than $5 at Kroger so you will need to fund the card with more money. You can use cash or a credit card to do this (and you still get all the miles, reward points or cash back that you normally would through that credit card). You can do this at the Customer Service counter of any Kroger store or you can do it in a separate transaction while checking out BEFORE you purchase your groceries.

  • Your Kroger card can be used to purchase groceries, gas, gift cards and even your prescriptions!* If you have an idea of how much you spend on those items each month, just preload your Kroger card with that amount monthly. Otherwise, you load as you go.

  • Each quarter, Kroger gives back to St. Francis School 4% of all the purchases from those cards! If only 20 families spent $200/month on their cards, the PA would get back $1,920!  Imagine how many SmartBoards, musical instruments, sports equipment, etc. we could buy for our children if 200 families started using Kroger cards to purchase the items they already purchase today!

Please get your Kroger card ASAP and start helping the school earn money the easy way. Otherwise, it's back to selling wrapping paper.....

*Some restrictions apply, such as tobacco, American Express gift cards, etc.

* Future PA Meeting Dates

October 18th, November 8th, January 9th, February 7th, March 21th       April 18tt, and May 16th

Athletics

Results from last week's action:

Soccer

A-Team

St. Francis 1 - Anchorage 0

Last Friday, the A-Team used a first-half penalty kick to beat Anchorage 1-0. Will Yelton was masterful in defense and Harrison Crawford repeatedly worried the Anchorage keeper with his powerful, long-range shots.

St. Francis 1 - Christian Academy (IN) 5

On Monday, the A-Team fell in a hole early against Christian Academy of Indiana but persevered to pepper the opposition's goal in the final 20 minutes of play. Will Cole scored for St. Francis in the 5-1 loss.

B-Team

St. Francis 1 - Anchorage 5

The B-Team scored early against Anchorage, with Owen Carey neatly placing his penalty kick beyond the reach of the keeper. Unfortunately, the Wyvern defense began to bend and the team went down 5-1.

St. Francis 6 - Christian Academy (IN) 4

The story was much different on Monday against the Warriors. Avery Wilson caught fire, scoring four goals, while Lorenzo Mahoney and Levi Tyler added to the tally. Keeper Angus Middleton saved a penalty kick and the B squad went on to capture the victory.

Jr. Soccer (3-5)

St. Francis 4 - Collegiate 5

The Jr. Soccer team competed early Saturday morning against Collegiate and came up just short of the win after leading for the majority of the game.  Goalkeeper Lake Makin turned in a superb performance, making stop after stop.  Lars Barbercheck and Levi Tyler were among the scorers for the Wyverns. The team will wrap up its season this Saturday at home against Whitefield and Collegiate.

Field Hockey

7-8 A-Team

St. Francis 2 - Crosby 3

Margaret Mundt scored her first goal after joining the team recently. Eva Borders continued her scoring streak and added the other goal for St. Francis.

St. Francis 0 - Meyzeek 1

Playing at a neutral site, the Wyverns lost another nail-biter without their leading scorer. The game was very fast-paced; this style of play will benefit the team in the coming weeks when tournament play begins.

4-6 C-Team

St. Francis 0 - Christian Academy 2; St. Francis 0 - Lourdes 3

Although the Wyverns are still searching for some wins, some positive insights are that the 14 new field hockey players are learning their positions and the rules. The whole team is also doing very well during both offensive and defensive corners.

Please save the date for the St. Francis Halloween Dance for Grades 6-8 on Friday October 4th from 7:00-10:00 p.m.! This year, thanks to the Student Council, we will also have a "Haunted Trail" behind the school in our wooded paths. Proceeds from the "Haunted Trail" will go to the Class of 2014 Class Gift, as they need to find extra ways to generate revenue due to our February LISC dance cancellation with no gym available. Parent Kay Chandler is heading up the planning committee; please contact Kay if you'd like to volunteer to help.
carpool

As mentioned at the Parent Nights, if the line of cars is getting close to backing up to Highway 42, PLEASE make a double line and pull up beside cars further up the line! You can then merge into the normal carpool line in an orderly way and keep everyone safe! Also, if in the afternoon you arrive early and are going to sit for ten minutes or so, please consider turning off your engines. Idling is wasteful and not good for the environment. Thanks in advance for your help in these areas!

Boy Scouts

If your 1st-5th grade son is interested in Boy Scouts, click here for a flyer.

Contact Dawn Bastian if you have any questions.

Thank you!
2012-13 Yearbooks

If you did not place an order for a yearbook last year, it's not too late to receive one!

We have a handful left and the cost is $35.

Your child can pick one up in the Main Office.

Contact Natalie if you have any questions.

Thank you!
reminder

In order to streamline communications, please email schedule changes to Natalie (early pick-up/late drop-off, going home with someone else, now/no longer going to enrichment, needs/doesn't need activity bus, etc.) rather than calling, when possible. Thanks!

Please note that there will not be a newsletter next week due to Fall Break. Thanks!
