Thanks to all the parents (and students!) who came to the Fall Sports Picnic last night to cheer on our Wyverns, and particularly to those who volunteered and made the event possible.

The School Committee held a pep rally yesterday during Morning Meeting to honor all our fall sport athletes.  There was introduction of all the athletes with much yelling and cheering; Simon Spengler, our German exchange student, won the "most spirited attire" award with his red-and-blue painted face; and the poem to end Morning Meeting was a translation of a Chinese song about the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival (which was yesterday) by exchange student Lucy Lv (she then sang the original, which was absolutely lovely).  That is a pep rally St.Francis-style!

Speaking of the School Committee, the 9th grade elected its class representatives this week and so now the School Committee has its full complement of 13 members:  four seniors (Olivia Beres, Tristan Krebs, Sam Schad, Gray Thurstone), three juniors (Jovanni Ahmad, Bridget Cantrell, Gracie Jones), three sophomores (Gilman Bagga, Jonny Simpson, Esme Tyler), and three freshmen (Emma Boland, Jillian Morrison, Andrew Swan).

Some exciting events coming up next week:  on Tuesday, the School Committee and about a dozen other students (who were chosen at random from those interested) will attend Thrivals 6.0 all day at the Kentucky Center.  (Our 8th grade class from the Goshen Campus is going, as well.)  Thrivals is an annual feature of the IdeaFestival and features fascinating speakers with a particular appeal to the audience of primarily middle and high school students.  Thrivals attendees will also have the opportunity to engage later this year with a Microsoft-sponsored project management curriculum that may be of interest and benefit to some of them.  On Wednesday, another dozen or so students (along with 6th graders from the Goshen Campus) will be attending a talk given by two of the Thrivals speakers, young Kenyan men who have written an autobiography entitled The Last Maasai Warriors that chronicles the tension between growing up in a culture that pushed them toward becoming warriors and their own desire for an education.  They now work as motivational speakers and should provide a fascinating perspective to our students.  Also on Wednesday, some of our science students (mostly 11th graders) will attend a day celebrating scientific research at the Kentucky Science Center.  They will attend the "Pulse of Surgery" program, see exhibits, and have time for discussion with local science professionals.

It will be a busy week!  Luckily, at the end of it, we come to Fall Break, which is Friday, September 27th and Monday, September 30th.  I hope parents and students all have the change to refresh and recharge!

Field Hockey

After a bit of a break in action to end last week, the girls' field hockey team was back at it  this week with matches against Atherton and Christian Academy.  On Tuesday night, they traveled to Atherton to play their second match of the season against the Rebels.   Atherton routed the Wyverns in their first match, winning 5-0, but the storyline went a little differently in the rematch.

This time, the Wyverns were able to challenge Atherton and control play on the field for the majority of the game. Despite coping with numerous injuries, the girls played their best game yet this season but ultimately lost 1-0 in overtime. The score was tied at 0-0 at the end of regulation, and the Wyverns went into  7 vs. 7 overtime. Atherton scored at the 8-minute mark, which ended the game with a sudden victory. 8th grade goalkeeper Natalie McClain had a solid game with multiple saves.

Thursday night, the home crowd welcomed the road-weary Wyverns back to the Goshen Campus for a match against Christian Academy.  The Athletic Department hosted its annual Fall Sports Picnic in conjuction with this contest.  St. Francis continued to show improvement in this game but fell short of the win, falling 6-0.

The team will play once more before Fall Break, as they travel on Monday to take on Holy Cross at 6:30 p.m.

Golf

In the first St. Francis golf match in a couple of decades, the Wyverns performed well on a course no member had played.  St. Francis traveled to Shepherdsville for a match with North Bullitt High School at Heritage Hill Golf Course.  The teams matched up, with two players from each team playing in each group.  The teams played the front nine of the course and the Wyverns fell a bit short of the win.  Emerson Mudd had the top performance for the team on the day.  His teammates Matt Brown, Ethan Mackin and Ryan Petiprin also played well for their first match and considering it was their first time playing the course.   Coach Benjamin Studevent-Hickman was pleased  with the team's performance.

The golf team will continue play next week with a home and home set against Walden.  On Monday at 4:30 p.m. the Wyverns will play host at Shawnee Golf Course, followed by traveling to the Polo Fields on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

Soccer

On Tuesday night, the soccer team traveled to Manual to take on the Crimson in a district match.  The last time the Wyverns faced Manual was in last season's district championship game, when the teams played to a stalemate through regulation and overtime, with Manual winning in penalty kicks 4-3.  This year, the Wyverns looked to exact a bit of revenge for such a tough close loss.  St. Francis struck early in this year's match when Mohammad Alwan scored on an assist from Abas Isgowe.  The Crimson answered back, scoring twice before freshman Andrew Thurstone came through with the Wyvern's second goal, the first of his high school career.  St. Francis continued to fight tough but eventually fell 5-2.

Thursday night at the Fall Sports Picnic, the Wyverns hosted the Bethlehem Eagles in a match-up of "Class A" schools; Bethlehem managed a 3-0 shutout.

Up next for the soccer team are trips to Fort Thomas Highlands tomorrow; game time is set for 5:30 p.m.  Next week, they will travel to Lexington Christian on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. and KCD on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

Fall Sports Picnic

The Athletic Department would like to thank all those who came out to support the Wyverns at the Fall Sports Picnic on Thursday night.  Thanks to the fans, who were treated to free t-shirts courtesy of Buckhead Mountain Grill, Packaging Unlimited and OB/GYN Associates of Southern Indiana, for their support.  A huge thanks to the volunteers who came to work the gates and concessions and hand out t-shirts.  Great job to all the teams and good luck the rest of the way.

Bowling

The Athletic Department is still in search of a coach for the girls' bowling team this season.  The season is scheduled to begin on October 1st and will run through early February.  We currently have over 20 girls signed up but we must have a coach. (Significant experience is not necessary.)  If you are interested or know someone who may be, please contact Tony Butler at tbutler@stfrancisschool.org.

Basketball

Coaches Williams and Butcher and the varsity basketball teams will be host the inaugural St. Francis Basketball Training camp for students in grades 3-6 on October 1st and 2nd.  This event will raise money for the boys' and girls' teams; we look forward to their participation in helping some of our younger athletes get ready for the season.

General Information

All student-athletes playing winter sports (bowling or basketball) must submit updated physicals to the Athletic Department prior to beginning the regular season.  If you are in need of the form, please contact Coach Butler.
