Our faculty/staff and I enjoyed seeing so many parents at Wednesday's Parent Night.  We hope you were able to see St. Francis though the eyes of your child and gain a better sense of how the school year will unfold.

Extracurricular offerings are in full swing.  The Quick Recall team has been practicing for the past couple of weeks (note to 9th grade parents:  we need more 9th graders!); Math Madness is underway, with Math League not too far behind; Tuesday morning yoga in the Sacred Space (7:30 a.m.) is going into its third week; fall play auditions are on the horizon for the first week in October; 9th graders are signing up to begin hosting 8th grade visitors this week and are electing their class representatives next week; the Yearbook committee is forming; the Outdoor Activities Club met today to begin planning its first adventure; the Jazz Ensemble is just this week underway; and the Kentucky Youth Assembly group will soon have signups.  During the school day, students also can be part of the Sacred Space Committee, the Games Club, and the Chinese Culture Club.  There is plenty with which to become involved - these "official" school clubs as well as ad-hoc student-inspired offerings like the Cereal Club (an old St. Francis standby that appears to be on the cusp of a revival).

Involvement with activities solidifies one's connection to the St. Francis community; this is why we encourage it for all our students. "Community" as an ideal is so important to us - it is even one of the 18 words deliberately and thoughtfully chosen for our mission statement.  (St. Francis School cultivates a joyful, compassionate, intellectual community that celebrates individuality and inspires independent thinking for life.)  Speaking of community, please join us for the Fall Sports Picnic next Thursday at the Goshen Campus.  There will be Middle School and High School field hockey and soccer games and a grill-out.  You can mingle with other parents and cheer our Wyverns on!  The first game begins at 4:30 p.m.; the varsity soccer game is at 5:30 and the field hockey game at 6:00.  Hope to see you there!

Week Recap

The St. Francis varsity teams had a pretty light go of it this week.  The field hockey team visited Collegiate on Tuesday night.  With a roster that has been decimated by injury, the Wyverns employed many young players, including 8th grade goalkeeper Natalie McClain in her third start for the varsity team.  She was spectacular but ultimately the Wyverns fell 10-0.

The soccer team traveled to district rival Central on Tuesday night where the game ended early due to lightning.  With only a few minutes remaining in regulation, the Wyverns found themselves in a battle.  The score was tied 2-2 when the game was called.  The tie was truly frustrating for St. Francis as they managed more than 15 shots on goal, including a errant penalty shot, while holding Central to less than five.  Goals were scored by Abas Isgowe, who has totaled seven thus far on the season, and Jamie Anderson (his first career goal for the Wyverns).

Since this is a district game, it must be completed prior to the beginning of the District tournament.  Both schools are working to find a common date to complete the game.  Once scheduled, an update will be sent out.

Soccer Game Update

The coaches have decided to forgo the remainder of the Junior Varsity schedule due to a lack of players.  The following varsity game times have been adjusted to reflect this change.  9/17 @ Manual 7:30 p.m., 9/21 @ Highlands 5:30 p.m.

A Busy Week Ahead ...

The soccer team will travel to district rival Manual next week on Tuesday (7:30 p.m.), then play host to Bethlehem on Thursday (5:30 p.m.) and finally travel to Highlands on Saturday (5:30 p.m.).  Field hockey will play at Atherton on Tuesday night (5:00 p.m.) and then host Christian Academy on Thursday (6:00 p.m.)

Fall Sports Picnic

Come help support Wyvern fall athletic teams at our annual Fall Sports Picnic.  This year, fans will take part in a "White Out" event complete with free Wyvern t-shirts for those in attendance.  We have five games scheduled for this event.  Three are soccer games:  the Middle School will take on Collegiate with the "A" team at 4:30 p.m. and the "B" team at 5:45 p.m.  The Varsity team will host Bethlehem at 5:30 p.m.  Field hockey will host Christian Academy, with two games on tap for the evening - MS at 4:30 p.m. followed by the Varsity at 6:00 p.m.  There will be a grill with burgers, hot dogs and chicken, as well as other items available.  Admission will be $5 for adults and $2 for kids 5 and up and will include a free t-shirt, while supplies last.   Come out and support the Wyverns!

In case you missed last week...

Parents - I have been enjoying meeting all of the new students and reacquainting myself with the returning students.  Beginning in October, I will be offering a monthly parent discussion group. This is an opportunity for parents to gather and discuss topics related to adolescents and parenting. All of the groups will be from 8:15 a.m - 9:15 a.m. in the Conference Room. If there are parents who are interested in the discussion, but prefer an evening time, please email me.  If there is enough interest, I will offer an evening time as well.

Our first parent discussion group with be Wednesday, October 2nd at 8:15 a.m.  The topic will be the year ahead and the adolescent brain! On Friday, November 1st, we will be discussing the Madeline Levine book, Teach Your Children Well, which was one of the Faculty reading options this summer. Levine addresses the high-stress culture for students today and how to align our core values as parents with our parenting. You have just under two months to review the book and join in on the discussion. Friday, December 13th will be the final discussion group of the semester with a topic TBD.  Please take advantage of this unique opportunity to meet other parents and continue learning about the wonder that is adolescence!

Parents and Parking

Parents - When you come downtown to school during the day and park in our new parking lot, we do ask that you pay in the automated machine.  We own the lot, but we use the revenue from parking to sustain it.  We wish we could offer everyone free parking, but unfortunately all of us -- faculty/staff, parents, students -- need to pay for our parking just like the general public.  The good news for the school is that most of the spots are rented to monthly parkers, so there aren't often that many spaces available during the day.  There are a couple of SFS visitors spots, but those are primarily for our guests and admissions prospects; they will be in use mostly at the beginning and end of they day when shadows are dropped off and picked up.  If you are here in the middle of the day briefly and one of those spots is available, feel free to use it.

Upcoming Lane Closures on Broadway

Beginning in late September, two of the three westbound lanes on Broadway between 2nd and 3rd will be closed between 9:00 a.m. and around 4:30/5:00 p.m. for LG&E work.  This is part of an LG&E project that began back in 1996 (!).  The estimate is that these lanes will be closed for about a week; following this, two lanes on Broadway between 3rd and 4th will be closed for about a week as the project moves west.  Because work doesn't begin each day til 9:00 a.m., it should not affect morning drop-off.  It will snarl afternoon traffic heading west on Broadway, so if that is your normal route, you may want to explore some alternatives.

Rosalind Wiseman Book Signing

Rosalind Wiseman, author of Queen Bees and Wannabees, has written a new book, Masterminds and Wingmen: Helping Your Son Cope With Schoolyard Power. She will give a public presentation on October 2nd at 7:00 p.m. at Collegiate. All parents are invited; click here for more information.

Family Picnic and Polo Event

The annual
St. Francis Polo and Picnic event will be held Sunday, September 15th at Hardscuffle Farm in Prospect. Gates open at noon and the match begins at 1:00. This is a casual, family-friendly event - bring your picnic or purchase food from the Bar-B-Lou food truck (supplemented by the bake sale efforts of the 10th grade class). Admission is $40 per car. A great chance to relax and enjoy a beautiful afternoon with St. Francis friends!
