Our action-packed September rolls on! This week we hosted our last PA Coffee, for Middle School Parents, and had a wonderful turnout. We were also treated to a visit and assembly from children's author Tyler Whitesides that was very entertaining for our intermediate grade students (and thanks to Abbey Flynn for organizing!). We also hosted Lower School Parent Night Thursday evening and will share more on that next week. Combined with the usual goings-on, it has been an active week on campus (not to mention our first P.E classes indoors due to rain!).

null Speaking of the PA Coffee, one of the items Director of Counseling Julie Marks shared was the book many of our faculty read this summer: Teach Your Children Well by Madeline Levine. This highly informative and entertaining book is aimed mostly at parents and details strategies and real-life examples of how to deal with an ever-changing parenting climate for kids of all ages. Anecdotes from her professional experiences are humorous, heart-warming, and sometimes a little bit scary. We highly recommend it to you, and of course, it naturally applies to educators as well. Stay tuned for information from Julie Marks about a book club for parents.

Finally, I received an email from alumni parent Brad Asher, who sent me a snippet of an essay his daughter Lila (G '10) wrote for a recent high school essay. I think it speaks for itself:

I belong to a community of learners, an ever-shifting portion of students who are excited by interesting material. I joined this community when I started kindergarten at St. Francis, a school with a progressive education philosophy, open classrooms, and a huge rural campus. Every year through eighth grade, caring teachers fostered my love of learning. Until I graduated middle school, my group of learners surrounded me in every class, and I didn't have to look far to find friends inspired by our readings or activities.

Feel free to email me with any comments, questions or suggestions.

Tyler Whitesides, Author Visit

Who likes onions, plays the marimba, nullmakes short movies,

and was a former janitor? Tyler Whitesides of course! If you have not already heard from your student, Tyler Whitesides, author of the Janitor series of books, visited our own 3rd-5th grade students on Wednesday.

He engaged the students with stories of his adventures as a janitor and how imagination can make an ordinary job an extraordinary adventure. His engaging presentation consisted of hilarious personal experiences, poetry readings using voices from movie characters, and music made from found objects, including our own recycling bin. Mr. Whitesides had the children giggling, listening in awe, asking questions, and learning what it means to turn your passions into creative writing. If you would like to learn more about Tyler Whitesides, visit his website at www.tylerwhitesides.com. We feel very fortunate that our students had this incredible experience.

Athletics

Results from last week's action:

Soccer

A-Team

St. Francis 2 - Whitefield 2null

The Wyverns made the journey to Whitefield and were in commandfor the majority of the game. St. Francis did everything possible to maintain the 2-1 lead in the waning moments, until the Wildcats pulled off some late heroics to earn the tie.Ethan McCrocklin and Harrison Crawford scored the St. Francis goals.

St. Francis 2 - Highlands Latin 2

In this match, the Wyverns dug themselves into a hole early by getting down 0 - 2. A long and impressive Harrison Crawford 45 yard goal right before intermission gave the team new life, now only down 1 - 2. Theo Taylor added a second-half goal to knot the game up. Both teams battled back and forth in an attempt to capture victory. This was a great entertaining game to watch.

Jr. Soccer (3-5)

St. Francis 7 - KCD 4

Brian Haupt, Lake Mackin and Drew Siciliano all rotated in at goalie to help SFS hold KCD to only four goals. Levi Tyler, Lars Barbercheck and Mack Van Inwegen all had goals for the Wyverns, as they pulled away with the victory.

St. Francis 5 - Collegiate 7

Levi Tyler capped off an outstanding day as he secured his second hat trick (three goals) on the day. Levi showed his versatility by playing several positions, including goalie, in order to get some of his younger teammates some game experience.

The Jr. Soccer team will have a rematch with Collegiate on Saturday at 8:00 a.m.

Field Hockey

7-8 A-Team

St. Francis 1 - Kammerer 3null

Playing a tough and physical Kammerer team, the Wyverns turned in one of their better efforts this season. This game showed the girls that they can compete with any team on their schedule. Eva Borders, who is improving with each game that she plays in, scored the Wyverns' only goal.

St. Francis 2 - St. Mary's Academy 0

Within the first two minutes of the game, SFS struck first as Hanna Cobb scored the game's first goal. Just as the game began, so it ended in similar fashion when Eva Borders connected on the Wyvern's second goal to preserve victory in the final minutes.

4-6 C-Team

St. Francis 0 - Anchorage 0

In an even match, both teams struggled to get any offense going. Credit does go to the SFS defense as Caroline Frederick and Sydney Ragland both did a tremendous job as goalies to deny any points from Anchorage for 48 minutes of action.

St. Francis 0 - Holy Trinity 5

On a hot and muggy day, thenull Wyverns just couldn't get it going. Caroline Frederick continued her stellar play in goal, making many stops. The C-team is still learning the ins and outs of the game, with many players gaining valuable game experience this season.

Love Halloween? Love the Class of 2014?? As we will not be hosting our usual LISC dance in February (due to NO GYM!), our 8th graders need to find additional ways to make some revenue for their annual class gift. So in making plans for our annual Halloween Dance, which will be on Friday night October 4th from 7:00-10:00 p.m., they thought a "Haunted House" or games of chance with prizes (or any other creative idea!) might take up some of the slack. If any parents would like to volunteer to help out, please get in touch with Student Council Sponsor Reed Gabhart.
