Head of Downtown Campus
The third week of school has come to a close, and life at the High School is feeling much more settled for both students and teachers. We hope all parents can join us next Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. for the Parent Night Program to learn more about what we do here all day. You will receive a copy of your child's schedule and go around to meet all of his or her teachers. Please come if you can!
Next week also brings our first Community Service day. Students and faculty/staff are divided into groups going to one of 16 different sites. Seniors indicate a specific preference; sophomores and juniors indicate which area they'd most like to work; and freshmen are assigned as needed. Strands include Environmental Stewardship (Falls of the Ohio, Louisville Nature Center, Olmsted Parks), Human Services (Christian Care Communities, Gilda's Club, Project Warm, Kentucky Refugee Ministries, Center for Women and Families, Chestnut Street YMCA, St. Francis' Goshen and Harrods Creek Campuses, Americana Center, Dreams With Wings, and Family and Children's Place), and Civic Literacy (Planned Parenthood, We Act, Kentucky Science Center). On six days per year (three each semester), we have morning classes and then dismiss to community service groups at 11:30. Students remain in the same group for the full school year, hopefully gaining an understanding of the organization for which they are volunteering and an appreciation for the service work itself.
For parents of all new students: The "interim quarter" ends next Friday, September 13th. The following Friday, September 20th, we will send out written comments on all new students so that you and your student can get a sense of how s/he is doing academically in these first few weeks. Our philosophy of encouraging students to take responsibility for their own learning means that we do always let students see their grades and comments first (on Friday mornings during advisee groups), followed by making them available to parents later in the day. The first set of grades and comments for all students will be out on Friday, October 18th, following the end of the first quarter on Friday, October 11th.
Enjoy the weekend!

This Week in Wyvern Athletics
Soccer
The soccer team finished its 7th Region All "A" Tournament on Saturday in the championship game against host KCD. The Wyverns fought tough in this match, though they found themselves behind 2-0 after the first half. St. Francis pulled within a goal midway through the second half as Abas Isgowe scored on an amazing shot over the head of the Bearcat goalkeeper. This goal gave the Wyverns some momentum to continue attacking but they could not generate any more scores and eventually fell 4-1. This marked St. Francis' first trip to the title game of the tournament in a number of years.
On Tuesday night, St. Francis hosted fellow class "A" competitor Sayre from Lexington. The Wyverns fought valiantly in this contest but found themselves in a hole following the first half as they were down 2-1. The goal was scored by Abas Isgowe, the team's leading scorer, once again. After a motivational halftime speech, the Wyverns came out with some fire in the second half but were unable to keep the Spartans out of the goal. The final score was 4-2.
St. Francis will look to get back into the win column when they travel to district opponent Central on Tuesday night to play the host Yellowjackets. The Wyverns defeated Central twice last season, including the district tournament semifinals and have been victorious in their previous five matches against the Yellowjackets. Tuesday night's game will be played at Louisville Champions Park on River Road at 5:30 p.m.
Field Hockey
The field hockey team has been overwhelmed by a slew of injuries to key players this season. Currently, goalkeeper Alissa Vance and senior Eliza Jay are out. Despite the injuries, the Wyverns have continued to play well while calling upon Goshen Campus students to help fill some of the voids. Eighth grade goalkeeper, Natalie McClain, has played in two games since Alissa has been out, and she is expected to continue to pull double duty as goalkeeper for the Varsity and the Middle School "A" team.
On Tuesday this week, the depleted Wyverns took on perennial power Presentation at Goshen. The Wyverns fought tough in this match but found themselves on the losing end of an 8-0 score. Thursday night, St. Francis played host to rival South Oldham at Goshen. The first half was well contested as Natalie started her second game in the goal and continued to show great promise. Midway through the half, heat became a problem and junior captain Gracie Jones stepped in to play keeper. Though she had little experience at the position, Gracie played well, allowing only one goal, and Natalie was able to return for the second half. The Wyverns continued to fight tough behind great defense from senior defender/captain Alma Herovic, but eventually fell 3-0.
Up next, the Wyverns will travel to Collegiate to take on the Amazons at Champions Trace Park on Newburg Road. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.

Comments from the Director of Student Services
Parents - I have been enjoying meeting all of the new students and reacquainting myself with the returning students. Beginning in October, I will be offering a monthly parent discussion group. This is an opportunity for parents to gather and discuss topics related to adolescents and parenting. All of the groups will be from 8:15 a.m - 9:15 a.m. in the Conference Room. If there are parents who are interested in the discussion, but prefer an evening time, please email me. If there is enough interest, I will offer an evening time as well.
Our first parent discussion group with be Wednesday, October 2nd at 8:15 a.m. The topic will be the year ahead and the adolescent brain! On Friday, November 1st, we will be discussing the Madeline Levine book, Teach Your Children Well, which was one of the Faculty reading options this summer. Levine addresses the high-stress culture for students today and how to align our core values as parents with our parenting. You have just under two months to review the book and join in on the discussion. Friday, December 13th will be the final discussion group of the semester with a topic TBD. Please take advantage of this unique opportunity to meet other parents and continue learning about the wonder that is adolescence!
