NO SCHOOL Friday, September 27th-Monday, September 30th (Fall Break)

Reed Gabhart
Head of Goshen Campus

As we wrap up our second week of the new school year, "things" are starting to settle into the normal school routine (if there is such a thing as "normal" in a school like ours!). The buzz of discussions fills the building, laughter reverberates in the lunchrooms, schedules are becoming memorized, fall play auditions have occurred, and the heat has returned with a vengeance (stay hydrated, Wyvern athletes!). In short, we're rolling!

I thought you might enjoy hearing about a component of the annual St. Francis Board Retreat I attended earlier this week. An alumni panel of both Goshen and Downtown graduates addressed the full Board about their memories of both campuses, and how a St. Francis education had affected their further education and careers. Here is a sampling of some of their comments:

*    "The outside space on the Goshen Campus is so important in my memory. And that contrasted so perfectly with the urban environment of the Downtown Campus."
*    "The community service we did in high school is something I really value. I can honestly say I received a better education in high school than I did in college."
*    "The open environment at Goshen taught us how to work in a bustling environment. The freedom and self-reliance we gained from that experience was something you otherwise might not learn."
*    "The writing skills I acquired were stronger than my future classmates'."
*    "Grades didn't seem to matter so much. In the real world, who asks you about your grades?"
*     "At Goshen I valued the amount of free play opportunities we had. Sure, we had structure and regular lessons, but the freedom of free play was so important, too."
*    "A St. Francis education seems to always turn into conversations. This helps in life-the ability and opportunity to learn to speak for yourself."
*    "The open environment made it feel like we were our 'own little village' inside a school."

I love that last one! And it is nice to see that what held true in previous decades is still in evidence today.

In news from our Middle School "village," we elected our Student Council officers this week to join our 8th Grade officers announced last spring. Here is our full Student Council, who I have full confidence will do a great job advocating for their peers and helping the school community in countless ways:

8th Grade: President, Theo Taylor, Officers, Eva Borders, Lillian Dine Young, Hannah Jones, Shelly Lancaster and Natalie McClain
null
7th Grade: Maggie McGraw and Olivia Zimmerman
6th Grade: Grace Donovan and Eston McLeroy
5th Grade: Jimmy Lancaster and Levi Tyler

LETS DO THIS!!!

We have officially kicked off our 5-Week Annual Fund Drive. Last year we finished with 98% parent participation and I know we can reach the 100% mark this year! You should have received a pledge envelope in your child's backpack earlier this week. Please get those back to the office as soon as possible! If you did not receive one, we have extras at the front desk. THANK YOU in advance for your support and generosity!

SFS Spirit Night and Parent Night News!
We wanted to let you know about a change and exciting addition to our calendar for September to give you plenty of advance notice!

First, we saw an opportunity to create an All-Campus event this fall with the Downtown Campus having its annual Fall Sports Picnic on Thursday, September 19th on the Goshen Campus. We were able to rearrange our Middle School sports schedule to add both soccer and field hockey games that afternoon so we can have a joint "Spirit Night"/"Fall Sports Picnic" this year! All of our fall field sports teams will be in competition here at the Goshen Campus beginning at 4:30 with Middle School field hockey and soccer games, and ending with  varsity soccer and field hockey games. Spirited play, food from the grill, Wyvern wear, and plenty of red and blue will be on display! We hope you and your kids can join us for this celebration of athletics and school spirit on Thursday, September 19th, so mark your calendars now and we'll see you then!

And as a result, the Middle School Parent Night originally scheduled on the same evening has been moved back two nights earlier to Tuesday, September 17th at 6:30 p.m.! Please make a note and remember, all dates and games are on the official school calendar.
Author Visit
We are excited to announce that children's author Tyler Whiteside will be coming to speak to our 3rd through 5th grade students on September 11th. He will be at Barnes and Noble in the Summit that evening to sign books, as well. We would love to have a large representation of our students at the signing, so please go ahead and mark it on your calendars. We will inform you of the time as the event gets closer.
SFS Improv "Louisville's Got Talent"

The Jewish Community Center's CenterStage is hosting an event called "Louisville's Got Talent". The SFS High School improv team, "Currently Out of Order", coached by Rachael Dobring, auditioned last weekend and were chosen to be in the top 20. They will compete for first place on September 8th at 2:00 p.m. at the JCC. We need your help! Audience members will be voting. 50% of our total score is decided by the audience. Please come join us and vote for our team. There are only 250 tickets available, so purchase ASAP. Tickets are $7 for kids and $10 for adults. Please purchase by phone at 502-459-0660 or click here. We really appreciate your support and look forward to seeing you then!

Quick Recall
St. Francis School is developing a Middle School Quick Recall team that includes 7th/8th graders, as well as a 6th grade team for the 6th Grade Showcase. Quick Recall is an academic game in which students are asked challenging questions from the following areas of study: math, English literature, humanities, history and science. A team needs at least four participants; however, ideally there are six or more. Students need to be available to scrimmage against another school's academic team afterschool 5-6 times in the late fall and winter. Those that tryout for Quick Recall generally have a strength in one of the subject areas and help their team answer difficult questions in that subject. Quick Recall is similar to the game show "Jeopardy". Many schools have had great success in organizing a Quick Recall team, taking teams to the Governor's Cup competitions and scrimmaging against fellow public and private schools. The kids love participating in this event. St. Francis School will take students to the Governor's Cup this spring if we have enough players and interest. Quick Recall practices for the 6th grade team will be held on Tuesdays during lunch and recess; the team will be coached by our new science teacher, Franky Wade, with help from Heather Varda. The 7th/8th grade practices for Quick Recall will be held on Wednesdays during lunch/recess and coached by Heather and Patrick Donovan
Claudia McCrocklin, Learning Resource Center Director
Exciting new things are happening on campus to help Middle School students get the school year started with a bang!  This year, Mrs. Ann Mundt from the Learning Resource Center is offering an organizational workshop. She kicked off the program this summer to help students start the school year with a well-thought-out organizational plan for their lockers, school papers, and getting homework done. This will be an ongoing offering for any Middle School student who needs this kind of support. Click here for more information or if you would like to enroll your student.

We are also very pleased to have the after-school Homework Hall (previously known as Study Hall) staffed by one of our very own, Andrew "Dewey" Kincade. Mr. Kincade is an alumni of the Goshen Campus.  He has a B.A. from Kenyon College, and an M.A. from the University of Louisville.  Andrew and his wife, Jessica, moved back to Louisville from New York with their daughter Penelope in 2009.  Prior to returning to Louisville, he signed with Velour Records, a Sony subsidiary, and toured with the band The Navigators for several years. Dewey has been teaching music (guitar, piano and voice) and recently produced Morgan Brooks' second album with fellow St. Francis alumnus Colin Brown. This summer, Dewey facilitated the 7th grade Book Club, which received rave reviews. He is excited to help 4th through 8th graders with their homework, projects, and studying after school. Click here to sign up for Homework Hall.
Athletics
Both field hockey and soccer seasons are under way for the St. Francis Wyverns. Teams have been hard at work since the beginning of August in preparation for what looks to be a fabulous season for both sports. This season SFS will have three soccer teams: A and B teams for Middle School (5-8) soccer and a Junior soccer team, consisting of 3rd, 4th and 5th graders. Field hockey will have two Lower School teams (1st/2nd grade and 3rd grade teams) competing in the NE YMCA league on Saturdays. The Middle School will have a 4th-6th grade team and 7th- 8th grade team competing in separate divisions.  Results from the opening week of action:

Soccer
A-Team
KCD 3 - SFS 1
Ethan McCrocklin, in his soccer debut, made numerous saves in goal. Harrison Crawford scored a beautiful goal from the top of the box.

SFS 3 - Walden 3
After falling behind by two goals early, the Wyverns rallied to go ahead at halftime, 3-2. Angus Middleton made an amazing save, tipping the ball over the bar, to preserve the draw.

B-Team
KCD 1 - SFS 1
Avery Wilson scored for the lone goal for SFS. Angus Middleton saved a penalty kick to keep the score at 1-1 in what was a great game.

SFS 9 - Walden 0
Owen Carey and Levi Tyler had hattricks for SFS.

Junior Soccer
SFS 2 - Whitefield 2
Levi Tyler scored two goals and Drew Siciliano and Lake Mackin played in goal to hold Whitefield to two goals.

Field Hockey
7-8 A-Team
KCD 2 - SFS 0
The Wyverns played a great game and showed determination and promise for the season.

  carpool

Parents,

Whether you're dropping off in the morning or picking up in the afternoon, there are a few ways that you can help keep the carpool line running smoothly:

-Please stay in the car and allow the faculty/staff to help your child(ren) out of the car
-Once you're in the "circle" in front of the school, please pull up as far as you can so that the cars behind you can also pull forward
-Whenever possible, please have your child sit on the passenger side of the vehicle so that he/she can exit safely by the curb
-Please have your student(s) ready to hop out of the car with backpacks zipped and coats on
-In the case that traffic backs up onto Highway 42, please pull into the drive and start a second lane of traffic. These lanes should once again merge as you get closer to the front entrance of school.

Our primary goal is always to make sure that all students get in and out of vehicles as safely as possible. We appreciate your following these guidelines and helping the carpool process run effectively. Thank you.

If you are encountering a problem accessing the form, please email Natalie in the Main Office.

Upon a poem

Having all the right words
Good enough to read

In loving memory...

Sue Wood taught K-3 math from 1967 to 2000 at St. Francis School on the Goshen Campus.  She was a progressive and innovative teacher, pioneering our hands-on Math Lab. Personalizing her approach to each student, she believed in teaching children reasoning and thinking rather than rote memorization. Her ability to reach young children and open the world of mathematics was deemed magical. Among others, she taught Math Lab Workshops to University of Louisville and Indiana University students, and to teachers in the Louisville and Jefferson County Schools. Sue touched the lives of many St. Francis students and colleagues and will be dearly missed.

A service will be held Saturday, August 31st at 2:00 pm at Pearson's Funeral Home, 149 Breckinridge Lane. Burial service will be Sunday, September 1st at 2:00 pm at Riverside Cemetery in Hopkinsville, KY.
