AST crop Head of School Comments

 By Alexandra Thurstone '84
 Head of School

The school year is off to an excellent start on all SFS campuses.  The very exciting news is that we are GROWING!  Starting with the Preschool campus, we opened with 71 students, which is just shy of last year's opening enrollment of 75.  However, this year, the Junior Kindergarten moved back to Goshen, so this enrollment would have been just about even with last year's if JK were still at the Preschool.  Plus, we have already added two students since the first day of school, with another soon to join us.  Overall, we welcomed 35 new students to the Preschool this fall.  Considering that we announced that the Preschool will move to the Goshen Campus in 2014-15, we are thrilled that we maintained our enrollment, and look forward to many of our Preschoolers moving with us to Goshen next year.

On the Goshen Campus, we opened with 249 students, up 6% from 235 last year, and the largest Goshen Campus enrollment since 2008.  In addition, we have already enrolled one new student on the Goshen Campus.  There are a total of 40 new students on the Goshen Campus, with 26 new Lower School students and 14 new Middle School students.  JK returned to Goshen this year with seven students.  The grades with the most new students include the 3rd grade with eight new students, making it the largest class on the Goshen Campus at 40 total, and the 6th grade, also with eight new students.  Every grade on the Goshen Campus has at least one new student, with most having three or more new students.  We are also very pleased that 14 of our JK or K students came from the SFS Preschool.

The High School opened with 148 students, up 9% versus last year's 135 students on opening day, and the largest opening day enrollment in the High School's 38-year history.  We have already added one additional new student on the Downtown Campus.  In addition, the freshman class is 38 students, which is also, to our knowledge, the largest freshman class in the high school's history.  With this enrollment, there are a total of 42 new St. Francis School students on the Downtown Campus, with 24 new freshmen (the remaining 14 came from the SFS Goshen class, and comprised over half of their Goshen class); 14 new 10th graders (bringing that grade to 43 students, and making it the largest class in the entire Preschool-12th grade school); and four new 11th graders.  We have continued our tradition of enriching our community with foreign exchange students.  This year, we have a 10th grade girl from Spain and an 11th grade boy from Germany.  We also welcomed back our two Chinese students for their second year, one in 10th grade and one in 11th grade.

Some have asked recently how large we intend to grow.  This is a question the Board and administration have pondered.  We believe that 300 is the appropriate size for the JK-8 grades (the Goshen Campus enrollment has been larger than this in the past, but not with a Preschool on site), and 180 would be the maximum for the High School (and would require finishing out two new classrooms on the third floor to accomplish).  Next year, we plan to decrease the size of the Preschool to 50 students, which is the maximum size that the space in Goshen will accommodate, and we expect the Preschool to be completely full going forward.  All told, this would result in a maximum all-campus enrollment of 530 with the Preschool on the Goshen Campus.  Our long-term plan is to build a new Primary/Preschool wing that would allow a larger enrollment (numbers TBD) for the Preschool, in particular.  With the growth we've been experiencing these last two years, we are well on our way to reaching these goals.

I look forward to seeing all of you at some of our upcoming important events, including our Middle School Parent Coffee, our Parent Nights on the Goshen and Downtown Campus, our Parent Welcome Lunch at the Preschool, and our first All-Campus Spirit Night/Fall Sports Picnic on Thursday, September 19 from 4:30-7:30 - this is our version of Homecoming, so even if your child doesn't play a fall sport, please make plans to come out and cheer on the Wyvern field hockey and soccer teams and partake in the grill out.  Hope to see you there!

High School Morning Meeting Poem

Every Monday through Thursday, the High School opens the day with Morning Meeting. For many years now, we have had a tradition of closing the meeting with a poetry reading.  Students and faculty volunteer to read poems, either their own or published works.  On the first day of school, Kinsey Morrison '14 shared a poem with us she had written especially for the occasion.  According to Alexandra Thurstone, starting out the year with a couple of tears always means that the year will be an auspicious one!

My Last First Day

On my first first day,

I wore a black strapless top

with matching sandals.

I had a huge crush on Gray Thurstone

and a terrible tanline.

On my first first day

I was a vegan. (Gag!)

I was 20 pounds lighter than I am now,

Probably because I was eating cardboard for lunch,

But I still desperately wanted to be

One of the skinny girls

And wear a bikini and a size small

Field hockey jersey.

On my first first day,

I went to Nancy's and got a

Cranbran bagel with honey and no

Cream cheese - vegan days, remember?

And then I "officially" introduced myself

To Kit Llewellyn.

At 13, I made sure to get my foot

In the door of her office,

Which is probably why I still haven't

Found my way out.

On my first first day,

Mr. Paice had a Mohawk,

I got to school 30 minutes early -

Which has never happened again -

And Sra. Katz intimidated me -

Which has never changed.

Sophomores, if today,

Your second first day

Is a bad day that's okay because you...

Won't remember any of it.

And juniors, you're pretty safe too,

Because all I remember from my

Third first day is that

Mr. Miron stole my keycard.

But freshmen...you better make it a good day.

I promise you will remember it.

I promise that this is the only school

In the world where Chinese Lion Dancers

Roam the hallways at the whim

Of a civil war re-enactor.

I promise you'll get that joke eventually.

I promise that here,

If you work hard and show up,

You can be a leader in field hockey AND

Quick recall,

Even if you're not the highest scorer

On either team.

I promise that you'll cry in class a lot.

Usually, because you're laughing so hard,

But sometimes, because you're in Calculus.

I promise that your sports practices will get changed

At least one a week.

Or if you play field hockey,

Twice a day.

I promise you'll like art,

And I promise you'll hate the back stairway.

I promise you should go to the big games,

And the plays and the talent show,

Because that's when you'll realize

just how much love is in this room.

I promise that we are a family,

even if a highly dysfunctional one.

I promise that unless you're Jack Costel,

You will get sick of McDonald's.

I promise that Ms. Gorman does get sick

Of hearing about your day to day problems.

But you should tell her about them anyway,

Because somewhere along the line

She teaches you how to fix them yourself.

Most of them anyway.

I promise that you won't be friends with everyone,

But you can be friends with anyone.

I promise that most of the poems are

Shorter than this one,

But some will be even longer.

I promise that sometimes 6:30 a.m.

Will come way too early,

And you won't be as excited to get up as you were

On your first first day.

Okay honestly,

I promise that a few times over the next four years,

You'll get three hours of sleep

And you won't want to get up at all.

But I promise that there will be these

moments where out of nowhere

it hits you,

That this place is special,

And here you are loved.

And you know in your core

That this is where you belong.

One of those moments will be your last first day.

On my last first day

I think Gray is a good friend and a good man,

And somehow I still haven't had a single class

With him, which seems mathematically

Impossible in a school this small.

On my last first day I still have a pretty bad tan line,

But my hair looks better

Because I got Jillian to fix it.

On my last first day

I can't believe how much I didn't know

on my first first day.

But I'm proud of how much I've learned

And how much I still will.

On my last first day,

I didn't just come to school.

On my last first day,

I came home.

Former Wyverns Shine at the Next Level

St. Francis School has a number of recent graduates that have moved on to the next level of competition:  Setho Moshoeshoe (NKU), Napo Matsoso (UK), Noor Ambure (Berea), and Mohammed Musa (Spalding) are playing soccer; Cole Jordan (Centre) and Claire Johnson (Michigan State) are playing field hockey; and Rob Jamner (Oberlin) will run sprint races for the track and field team.

Napo Matsoso '13 is starting at midfield as a true freshman for the University of Kentucky.  Napo was named MVP at St. Francis his freshman year by scoring a staggering 29 goals and dishing out 19 assists.  The next season for St. Francis, Matsoso netted 16 goals and 10 more assists.  During his junior season, he found the back of the net 12 times, while connecting with a teammate for nine assists on the way to being named Most Outstanding Player and receiving first-team all-state honors. His senior campaign ended with 15 goals scored and eight more assists.

In their first games as collegiate athletes, Napo and Setho Mosheshoe '13 were set to be opponents as their teams faced off in an exhibition match.  Napo started and played the entire game while his counterpart, Setho, was sidelined with an injury.  The teams battled to a 1-1 tie.

After being cleared by the NAIA, Noor Ambure '13 has joined his Mountaineer teammates on the soccer field at Berea.  His coaches spoke highly of him as a person and a player in a recent email. They also said he logged substantial minutes in the team's win against Johnson University last week.  Expectations are for Noor to provide support from the bench but Coach Ron Horn stated he "wouldn't be surprised to see Noor earn a starting role before the season is over".

Claire Johnson '11 is entering her third year at Michigan State. After redshirting her freshman season, she saw action in five games last year during a highly successful season for the Spartans. They finished second in the Big Ten Conference and advanced to the tournament championship game.  They were also selected to the field for the NCAA Tournament following the regular season.  Claire lettered all four years in field hockey at St. Francis. She was named captain her junior and senior years and nominated for Ms. Field Hockey Kentucky as a senior.  She has seen action in all three of the Spartans' games this season.

The rest of our graduate athletes mentioned above are on rosters but have not secured playing time to this point in their collegiate careers.  We are cheering them on!

All-Campus Fall Sports Picnic - All Are Invited!

The annual Fall Sports Picnic will take place on the Goshen Campus on September 19th.  With five games on the schedule for the Fall Sports Picnic, the 2013 version of the event looks to be exciting.   Both Middle School soccer teams will play against Collegiate, the "A" team at 4:30 p.m. and the "B" team at 5:45 p.m.  Varsity soccer will host Bethlehem, kicking off at 6:00 p.m.  The field hockey teams will face Christian Academy.  The 7/8 team will play the Centurions at 4:30 p.m. followed by the Varsity team at 6:00 p.m.  There will be a grill-out with great food.  Come support all the Wyvern teams!

Message from Chair of the Board of Trustees,
Wes Johnson

There is nothing quite as magical as the first day of school!
The Board of Trustees just completed our annual Board Retreat, kicking off another year of working on strategy, budgets, fundraising, facilities, governance, and planning for the long term success of the school.  Our collaboration with the faculty and staff is especially gratifying - it is an honor to work with such dedicated, skilled, and passionate people.

I want to share a special moment from the meeting. Alexandra has just begun her 11th year as Head of School, and the Board celebrated her 10th year as head with a special gift.  You'll see a photo of a portrait of Alexandra, commissioned by the Board and created by our own Matt Gatton, that celebrates Alexandra's 10 years as Head.  The piece is truly exceptional; Matt created the portrait from pieces of St. Francis bumper stickers, and it is amazing.  I hope you agree it is a fitting gift to Alexandra from an appreciative Board.

We - parents past and present, alumni, friends and admirers - are truly blessed to be a part of the St. Francis community.  We are proud of our association with St. Francis, its wonderful Head, its incredible faculty and staff and with each of you - our St. Francis family.
Alumni News

Our sincerest gratitude to Daniel Chaffin G '88, '92, Amy Joseph Landon G '93, '97, and Katherine Steinbock Dyke '03 for their participation on the alumni panel for the Board of Trustees retreat. We love hearing what you are doing and how after all of these years St. Francis is still the place you hold dear to your heart.

As we welcomed back our students this year we also welcomed back familiar faces who are now here as parents in addition to being alumni. Below is a list of our legacies, or those students whose parents walked the halls before them.
