Head of Downtown Campus
We welcomed new parents to the Downtown Campus community on Wednesday night with our annual New Parent Dinner. Many thanks to our Parent Association for coordinating this lovely event.
Yesterday, all students and faculty watched "From One Second to the Next," Warner Herzog's new documentary about the dangers of texting and driving. It is well worth the 35-minute viewing time, for teens or adults. There is a link to the film on our Facebook page, or it can be easily found on YouTube by searching the title or filmmaker.
In English classes these past two weeks, students have been discussing Blood Horses, the all-school summer reading book. The faculty read Blood Horses, of course, and in addition, read one of two other books (along with our colleagues at the Goshen and Preschool campuses). Our choices were Sandra Steingraber's Raising Elijah: Protecting Children in an Age of Environmental Crisis and Madeline Levine's Teach Your Children Well. Raising Elijah is part memoir, part science text, in which ecologist and author Steingraber addresses the environmental crisis facing the next generation, focusing on the threats to their health as they grow and the lack of protective government regulations. Teach Your Children Well addresses the end result parents want to see - healthy, happy, successful children - while calling into question which parenting values and choices will achieve these results. (And also: what defines "successful"?) Teach Your Children Well is written for an audience of parents, but was also informative for us as educators, spawning some excellent discussion in our faculty meetings prior to the start of school. The book had much to say about our philosophy of working with students to foster independence and self-reliance by balancing privilege with responsibility.
Terri White, our Director of Student Services, holds monthly parent discussion groups on various topics related to raising teenagers. One of those meetings this year will be a book discussion group about Teach Your Children Well. If you are interested in reading it and joining us for that discussion later this fall, please do so! The parent discussion group dates will be listed in the next Wyvern Weekly.

This Week in Wyvern Athletics
Field Hockey
The field hockey team traveled to Assumption on Tuesday night. The Wyverns were back to full strength with the return of starters Bridget Cantrell and Page Dabney. They fought hard but fell to the Rockets.
Up next for St. Francis are home games against perennial power Presentation on Tuesday, followed by a matchup with South Oldham on Thursday. Both games begin at 5:30 p.m.
Soccer
The soccer team completed its run in the Mustang Classic by taking on the host on Saturday morning. The Wyverns did not fare well, losing to the eventual tournament champions.
After four days of rest and practice, St. Francis opened play Thursday in another tournament, the 7th Region All-"A" Classic at KCD against Brown. Due to the heat, officials implemented a 10-minute break every 20 minutes of play to give players an opportunity to hydrate as often as possible. Abas Isgowe worked his way through the defense late in the first half to open up the scoring off an assist by Michael Malpartida. By halftime, St. Francis had a commanding 2-0 lead. A goal by senior Riley Gregor put the Wyverns ahead 3-0 and Abas Isgowe completed the hat trick for his third goal of the night with under 10 minutes to play to seal the 4-0 victory. Along with Malpartida, assists came from Jose Zapata, Gregor and Isgowe.
The Wyverns advance to take on the host KCD Bearcats on Saturday morning for the championship. The Wyverns find themselves in unmarked territory as none of its current players has experience in this tournament's championship game. The Bearcats are coming off consecutive victories over Eastern and Collegiate. In the last St. Francis-KCD meeting, the All-"A" semi-finals last season, St. Francis fell 4-3 to the Bearcats. Game time Saturday is set for 9:00 a.m. at KCD, with St. Francis slated as the home team.
Golf
The inuagural season for golf at St. Francis has begun. The team is practicing and preparing for its first matches. Nina Erbes, the lone member of the girls' team, will begin with a match against PRP on September 9th at Sun Valley Golf Course. On September 17th, the boys will take on North Oldham at Heritage Hills. Both teams will play against Walden on September 26th at the Polo Fields.
Cross Country
The Wyvern runners, small but mighty, are also practicing in preparation for their first competitions. More to come on them!
