Head of Downtown Campus
The first week of school is in the books!
Over the past week, I've had adventures with the book-end classes of the High School - first the seniors on our annual whitewater rafting adventure in West Virginia, and then the freshmen, at their day-long orientation (including an afternoon of team-building exercises at Camp Piomingo). Both the Class of 2013 and the Class of 2017 are comprised of some extraordinary folks and are poised for fantastic years (along with their 10th and 11th grade friends, of course!).
This week, lockers were arranged, new students learned to sign out, book covers were cracked, summer-reading sketchbooks were turned in, friendships were begun, and the first student of the new school year flopped on my couch to moan "I'm sooooo tired." Yes indeed, we are back!
I want to share with you some excerpts from the year's first two Morning Meeting poems. Students and faculty volunteer each day to read one of their own works or a published piece as the closing moment to Morning Meeting. On our opening day, Kinsey Morrison '14 read her own poem entitled "My Last First Day". One portion reads:
On my first first day,
Mr. Paice had a Mohawk, I got to school 30 minutes early - Which has never happened again - And Sra. Katz intimidated me - Which has never changed.
Sophomores, if today, Your second first day Is a bad day that's okay because you... Won't remember any of it.
And juniors, you're pretty safe too, Because all I remember from my Third first day is that Mr. Miron stole my keycard.
But freshmen...you better make it a good day. I promise you will remember it.
She goes on to describe additional St. Francis experiences to the freshmen, and then concludes
I promise that there will be these moments where out of nowhere it hits you, That this place is special, And here you are loved. And you know in your core That this is where you belong.
One of those moments will be your last first day. ...
On my last first day I can't believe how much I didn't know on my first first day. But I'm proud of how much I've learned And how much I still will.
On my last first day, I didn't just come to school.
On my last first day, I came home.
On our second day, the senior class representatives read a poem to the 9th graders comprised of pieces of advice dispensed from various members of the senior class. A few of those august nuggets:
Four years go fast, savor each moment.
Appreciate your teachers and actively decide to learn from them. They teach because they love to, not for the money.
Go to Qdoba during a double lunch.
Don't be afraid to be obsequious.
If you don't know what obsequious means, look it up.
Develop a passion for learning. If you do, you'll never cease to grow.
Keep your mind open to new cultures.
This may just be high school, but follow your dreams and you will achieve them.
Read a poem in Morning Meeting.
Live on and be yourself.
Words to live by. Enjoy the weekend!

This Week in Wyvern Athletics
Soccer
The Wyvern soccer team kicked off its season in the North Oldham Mustang Classic Tournament. In their opener, the Wyverns took on a tough Cooper High team out of Boone County in Union, KY. St. Francis fought valiantly through the first half as they led 1-0 at halftime, behind an exceptional performance from senior keeper Kenny Gray who tallied 15 saves in the half. But the Wyverns had trouble holding the Jaguars at bay and eventually fell 4-1. The lone Wyvern goal was a 30-yard bomb from senior Riley Gregor.
In their second match of the season, the Wyverns faced off against the Red Devils from Jeffersonville High School in Indiana. The team came out a bit flat on the second day of classes and fell behind 4-0 in the first half. After an inspiring speech from captain Riley Gregor, the Wyverns came to life and played better in the second half. The final score was 5-0.
The Junior Varsity team hosted Brown last night and won by a final score of 3-1.
Up next for the Wyverns will be their final game of the North Oldham tournament on Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. against the tournament host North Oldham. The Mustangs are 2-0 after beating KCD in the opening round 3-1 and clobbering Cooper by a final score of 6-1. This will mark the first meeting between the Wyverns and Mustangs.
Field Hockey
On Tuesday night, the Wyvern field hockey team played a great game against Seneca High School. St. Francis was able to control the game from start to finish and end with a shutout score of 8-0. There were a total of 25 penalty corners and over 40 shots on goal. Goals were scored by four players - four by sophomore Page Dabney, two by junior Bridget Cantrell, one by senior Kinsey Morrison, and one by sophomore exchange student Fatima Rodriguez-Conde.
On Thursday night, the Wyverns played their home opener against rival Atherton. Early in the first half, the teams battled the elements as the skies opened and rain pounded the field. St. Francis was without its top two scorers, Page Dabney and Bridget Cantrell, for this match. The team fell behind midway through the first half and the Rebels went on to win 5-0. Sophomore Alissa Vance played well in goal with numerous saves.
The JV team played its first match following the varsity game. Although they played well, the squad lost 3-0.
Golf and Cross Country are also underway with practices - more on these teams soon as they begin competing!
Please come out to games and support the Wyverns!

Fall Play Announcement
Picasso at the Lapin Agile
By Steve Martin
This long running Off-Broadway absurdist comedy places Albert Einstein and Pablo Picasso in a Parisian cafe in 1904, just before the renowned scientist transformed physics with his theory of relativity and the celebrated painter set the art world afire with cubism. In his first comedy for the stage, the popular actor and screenwriter plays fast and loose with fact, fame and fortune as these two geniuses muse on the century's achievements and prospects as well as other fanciful topics with infectious dizziness. Bystanders, including Picasso' agent, the bartender and his mistress, Picasso's date, an elderly philosopher, Charles Dabernow Schmendimen and an idiot inventor introduce additional flourishes of humor. The final surprise patron to join the merriment at the Lapin Agile is a charismatic dark haired singer time warped in from a later era.
"Highly credible and... very funny. The subject matter is daring... You get giggles in plenty [and] moments of enlightenment... The introduction of the final, exquisitely selected visitor from the future is a master stroke." - New York Post "Consistently entertaining." - New York Daily News "Very engaging... Martin sends ideas onstage in baggy pants, with a cigar... mix[ing] the sublime with the ridiculous [so] that they can't be easily disentangled... Very good fun." - The New York Times "A major treat." - Newsday
Auditions will be held October 7th and 8th from 3:30 - 5:00 p.m. in the Commons Room

TARC Student ID
If your student would like a TARC Student ID so that they can receive the discounted student rate (80 cents), please email Emily Boyle. St. Francis will submit names of interested students to the Louisville Free Public Library for a Library Power Plus Card, and the Library will distribute the cards November 1. If you would like to read more about the program, click here.
TARC has a grace period in effect until cards are distributed in November, so your student can ride the bus until then without their Library Power Plus Card and still receive the student discount rate. The student simply need to tell the bus driver they are a student, and they do not need to provide any sort of enrollment verification until the grace period ends after the cards are distributed.
