Traffic Engineer, J. L. Gattis, Ph. D., discusses his findings after evaluating roads in the Iowa Tribal jurisdiction.
SPTTAP conducts Road Safety Assessments for Iowa Tribe and Sac and Fox Nation on August 9 and 10

Southern Plains TTAP Center collaborated with Traffic Engineer, J. L. Gattis, Ph. D., to conduct two consecutive Road Safety Assessments (RSAs), one for the Iowa Tribe and the other for the Sac and Fox Nation of Oklahoma, on August 9 and 10. Representatives from the Iowa Tribe, law enforcement, and others gathered at the Iowa Tribe Courtroom Multipurpose Building in Perkins, OK on August 9 to discuss road safety concerns for the Iowa tribal jurisdiction. One of the main areas of focus was the intersection at Hwy 177 and 33 near Perkins.

On August 10, representatives from the Sac and Fox Nation, along with local officials and law enforcement met at the tribe's education building in Stroud, OK to exchange ideas on road safety and the future transportation needs of the tribe. The meeting was followed by a field activity near the Black Hawk Casino in Shawnee, OK. The tribes will incorporate the RSA findings into their Transportation Safety Plans.

A Road Safety Assessment is a safety performance examination of an existing or future road or intersection by an independent, multidisciplinary team. The Southern Plains TTAP Center works with tribal governments to integrate RSAs into the project development process for new roads and intersections, and encourages RSAs on existing roads and intersections.
