Tribal Transportation Planning Seminar May 17-18
Tribal Safety Peer Exchange May 19

To assist tribes in transportation and safety planning, the Southern Plains Tribal Technical Assistance Program (SPTTAP) Center is hosting a free, two-day Transportation Planning Seminar and a free, one-day Tribal Safety Peer Exchange in Oklahoma City, OK May 17-19.
Tribal Transportation Planning Seminar (Course 8 - Tribal RoadStar Program) Tribal Transportation Planning is the process of developing strategies for operating, managing, maintaining, and financing the area's transportation system to achieve the community's long-term transportation goals and vision. Topics covered include Planning Concepts, Components of a Long Range Transportation Plan, Public Outreach, Census and Planning, and Transportation Improvement Plans.

Tribal Safety Peer Exchange (Course 18 - Tribal RoadStar Program) The Tribal Safety Peer Exchange provides tribal communities with trending evidenced based strategies that focus on behavioral safety for transportation, transit, safety and injury prevention. The peer exchange provides an opportunity for tribal, local, state and federal programs to network and develop partnerships while discussing: Pedestrian Safety, Child Passenger Safety, and Distracted Driving.

FAST LANE Grants
DUE April 14

Native Nations have until 7 p.m. Central Time on April 14 to submit their applications for Fostering Advancements in Shipping and Transportation for the Long-term Achievement of National Efficiencies (FASTLANE) Grants.


SHRP2 Implementation Assistance Program (IAP)
DUE April 29

Native Nations have until April 29 to submit proposals for funding under the SHRP2 Implementation Assistance Program (IAP). Proposals considered for financial and technical assistance include reliability data and analysis tools, railroad mitigation strategies, pavement delimitation and other select areas. Section 5311 Grant Applications
DUE May 1

SPTTAP wishes good luck to all Tribal Transit Providers who have applied for Section 5311 grants this year by the April 1 initial letter of interest deadline.

May 1 is the deadline to submit your complete application for this Oklahoma funding opportunity, including the published legal notices regarding public engagement and a notice to accept bids from disadvantaged businesses. By June 1, ODOT Project Managers will schedule meetings with applicants to finalize their applications.

BIA Indian Highway Safety Program
DUE May 2

Need funding for traffic safety campaigns or to conduct additional sobriety check points? The BIA Indian Highway Safety Program seeks to fund tribal law enforcement for over-time, full-time and impaired driving adjudication court.



Tribal Transit Program (TTP) Funding Available
DUE May 13

The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) announces the availability of approximately $5 million in funding for Native Nations who are recipients of the Tribal Transit Program (TTP).

Eligible proposals will propose capital projects, plans to aaxquire public transportation services including entering into service agreements with private providers, operating equipment and new transit facilities, planning, and administrative expenses for public transit projects that meet the growing needs of rural tribal communities. Safety Resource for Tribes

If your safety plan includes addressing issues such as impaired driving, increasing safety belt use, reducing distracted driving or increasing pedestrian safety, check out "Countermeasures That Work."

The booklet, available for free in PDF, offers strategies that have been proven to work. The guide includes data from Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS).

UPCOMING TRAINING AND EVENTS:
RIFDS training in Albuquerque

For those unable to attend the Road Inventory Field Database System (RIFDS) training held in Stillwater, Oklahoma earlier this year by SPTTAP, RIFDS training will be held this spring and summer at the National Indian Programs Training Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Classes will be held Wednesday- Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for select dates in April-July. More

In April, SPTTAP will be offering Defensive Driving Classes at the Chickasaw Nation and for the Cheyenne & Arapaho Tribes.

KDOT Transportation Safety Conference

Leadership Skills for Supervisors and Managers

Whether you are new to supervising, or have been a supervisor for many years, this course is designed to help supervisors develop a set of foundational skills that will make them more effective leaders in a supervisory role. Topics will include leadership attitude, communication, performance feedback, and time management.

April 26: Grant Writing Basics
Stillwater, Okla.

In these times of tight budgets and competitive funding, the skills associated with good grant writing become even more vital for Native Nations. This Southern Plains TTAP course will help you and your staff further develop your grant writing skills in a half-day session.

Oklahoma State University Proposal Development Specialist Nani Pybus, Ph. D will offer information on the basics of grant writing, including how to find funding sources and how to develop a successful proposal. SPTTAP Program Specialist Amy M. Echo-Hawk (Yakama/Pawnee) will offer strategic grant writing tactics tribal employees can use to create evaluation, reporting and grant seeking systems that are easier to manage.

2016 National Tribal Transportation Conference

The 19th Annual National Tribal Transportation Conference will be held in Anaheim, Calif., Oct. 3-6. Native Nations are invited to submit proposals for conference presentations by August 12.

Workshops will be considered in the areas of Technology, Planning, Project Management, Safety, Technical Areas, Leadership or Transit. Proposals can be submitted online, via email to NTTC@nijc.org, or faxed to 707-579-9019.
