Defensive Driving class coming to Muskogee, Nov. 14

According to the National Safety Council, so far this year in the U.S., there have been an estimated 879,487 crashes involving drivers using cell phones and texting. Learn how to handle distractions, aggressive drivers, inclement weather and more in the National Safety Council's Defensive Driving course coming up on November 14. Slots are still available for the course, set to be conducted by the Southern Plains TTAP at the Eastern Region BIA Offices in Muskogee, OK.

The National Safety Council's Defensive Driving Course strives to ensure that drivers get what they need to drive defensively--knowledge, skills and perspective that will help them continue to prevent injuries and save lives. This 6-hour course helps develop accident avoidance behavior and safe driving practices, which can significantly reduce the number of collisions

AARP recognizes Milton Sovo at Annual Honors Event

More than 600 family members, tribal leaders and honored guests from across the state recently attended the AARP Oklahoma Indian Elder Honors event which recognized elders from 30 Oklahoma tribes and nations.

Milton Sovo, Comanche, was among this year's honorees. Raised on a farm in Comanche County, Milton developed his love of Mother Earth's resources, thanks to the influence of his parents and grandparents. He used his college education in agriculture to further the conservation of all natural resources and to encourage his Native American brothers and sisters to recognize the cultural relationship between these resources and their use and care for future generations.

Sovo is president of the Oklahoma Tribal Transportation Council and is a member of the Oklahoma Department of Transportation Tribal Advisory Board. As a member of the Apache Town Board he has worked to use his knowledge of infrastructures, roads and water to better the community where he now resides with a large Native American population. Milton has done much to further government-to-government relationships with tribal and county governments, as well as state and federal government

Statewide Impaired Driving Prevention Campaign Kickoff
Join us at the capitol in Oklahoma City on Nov. 13

Tribal Safety Champions unite! Join us at the Statewide Impaired Driving Prevention Kickoff Campaign on Thursday, November 13 at
10:00 am. Every year, more than 10,322 people are killed by drunk drivers in America. This time of year is especially dangerous with the increase of holiday celebrations and frequent parties. In December 2012 alone, there were 830 people killed in crashes involving at least one drunk driver or motorcycle operator. On average, a third (31%) of all crash fatalities in America involves drunk driving.
This holiday season, make a plan, and encourage others to do the same.

FTA publishes new rule on CEs

On October 6, 2014, FTA published a joint final rule with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) that adds a number of new categorical exclusions (CEs) for FHWA and FTA pursuant to Section 1318 of the Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act (MAP-21).
The new CEs are effective November 5, 2014.

The CEs were developed based on responses to a stakeholder survey conducted in September 2012 and published in a notice of proposed rulemaking in September 2013 for public review and comment. The final rule adds three CEs to FTA's c-list (771.118(c)) and two examples to FTA's d-list (771.118(d)).
