EDC Exchange ~ April 3, 2014
Intelligent Compaction

Join us at noon on April 3, 2014, for a discussion with experts on Intelligent Compaction. This Every Day Counts webinar and exchange will be held at the Center for Local Government Technology in Stillwater, OK, from noon until 3:00 pm.
Lunch will be served! Please register to reserve your spot!

Pavement is typically designed to bear traffic demands for at least 20 years with regularly scheduled maintenance. When pavement begins to crack and crumble prematurely, one of the potential causes could be that the pavement and base layer were not compacted properly, or there is not a uniform thickness.

Intelligent compaction (IC) rollers greatly improve the quality, uniformity and long-lasting performance of pavements today. Using vibration and a system to collect, process, and analyze the measurements in real time, IC rollers are able to compact greater amounts of pavement with fewer passes than the traditional static rollers sometimes in a much shorter time. IC efficiencies produce time, cost and fuel savings. With more efficient paving processes, production can increase and State Departments of Transportation (DOTs) can construct greater amounts of roadway daily.

Have you scheduled the Defensive Driving Course or First Aid training for your Tribe?

The National Safety Council's Defensive Driving Course (DDC), instructed by Karla Sisco, strives to ensure that people get what they need to drive defensively--knowledge, skills and perspective that will help them continue to prevent injuries and save lives.

This 6-hour course helps develop accident avoidance behavior and safe driving practices, which can significantly reduce the number of collisions and citations your drivers might experience.

With the National Safety Council, you can also rely on First Aid Training that gives your employees the skills they need to save lives and avoid injuries. And, with the significant financial risks associated with healthcare costs and potential OSHA fines or penalties, First Aid training from the industry leader in safety can give you peace of mind in today's business environment.

Each module is accompanied with an exercise for the participants to get hands-on experience with the Highway Safety Manual.

The Highway Safety Manual crash prediction models for total crashes on rural two-lane roads and crashes based upon lane width, shoulder width, roadside hazard, traffic valume (exposure) and other characteristics are also presented.

$600 Million for Sixth Round of TIGER Funding
U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx recently joined President Barack Obama to announce that $600 million will be made available to fund transportation projects across the country under a sixth round of the U.S. Department of Transportation's highly successful Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) competitive grant program.

The announcement was made at the Union Depot in St. Paul, which received $35 million in the first round of TIGER to renovate the facility and restore tracks. Combined with roughly $480 million in federal funding for the Central Corridor light rail transit line, St. Paul's Union Depot is proof of the impact that transportation investment can make, leading to job creation, downtown revitalization and economic growth.

OSU Native Americans chosen for International Research Program
OSU scholars Keely Redhage and Amanda Mathias have been selected to participate in an international research program that will allow them to work with globally-recognized experts.

Two Oklahoma State University students are among three Native American scholars chosen to participate in prestigious international research programs set for this summer in France and Brazil. Amanda Mathias of Inola, Okla., and Keely Redhage of Poteau, Okla., have been chosen to participate in the International Research Experiences for Undergraduates (iREU) program. The research program offers outstanding scholars opportunities to work with globally-known researchers, chemists and materials scientists while experiencing the cultures of their host countries.

Nationally, a total of 13 scholars were selected for the iREU (research) program this year, including the three Oklahomans who applied for the opportunity through the OK-LSAMP program for minority students.
