On Thursday, February 6, the TTAP will be holding a Tribal Safety Workshop in Stillwater.

Sheldon Kipp, BIA, will be here to discuss the importance of developing Tribal Transportation Safety Plans. The Workshop will assist the tribes in learning the process of drafting a document that communicates the story of transportation safety in their communities. The completed safety plan should cover all relevant travel modes (roads, trails, marine, air) and should not be focused on the requirements of funding sources, but on a comprehensive strategy that will address all the Tribe's transportation safety goals.

Tribal law enforcement, Tribal EMS, Tribal injury prevention coordinators, Tribal roads personnel, and others interested in safety are all good candidates for this workshop.

Defensive Driving classes held in January and more to come in February!

The National Safety Council's Defensive Driving Course strives to ensure that people get what they need to drive defensively--knowledge, skills and perspective that will help them continue to prevent injuries and save lives. This 6-hour course helps develop accident avoidance behavior and safe driving practices, which can significantly reduce the number of collisions and citations your drivers might experience.

On January 23, twelve students from the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes attended the course at the Native American Church Building in Concho, OK. On January 27, the Muscogee (Creek) Nation hosted the class for 20 tribal employees.

What's the Game Plan for this weekend?

Whether attending the game, watching at a bar, or hosting a party, NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, TEAM Coalition, the NFL and Southern Plains TTAP remind everyone that Fans Don't Let Fans Drive Drunk.  Before choosing to drink, choose your team's MVP - a sober designated driver.

  • Designate your sober driver before the party begins.
  • Avoid drinking too much alcohol too fast. Pace yourself. Eat plenty of food, take breaks, and alternate with non-alcoholic drinks.
  • Keep track of how much you have had to drink
  • Make sure your ride is sober before letting him/her drive you.
  • If you don't have a designated driver, ask a sober friend for a ride home; call a cab, friend, or family member to come and get you; or if possible stay where you are for the night and don't drive until you are sober.
  • Use your community's sober ride program
  • Never let a friend drive drunk. Arrange a safe way for them to get home.
  • Always buckle up. It's still your best defense against other drunk drivers.
