Tribal Safety Funding Awards Announced

U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx announced Wednesday that 183 tribes will receive $8.6 million for 195 projects from the Federal Highway Administration's Tribal Transportation Program Safety Fund (TTPSF) to improve transportation safety on tribal lands.  Secretary Foxx made the announcement at the White House Tribal Nations Conference on Wednesday, November 13.

"Residents living in our nation's tribal communities need and deserve safe roads and bridges and we are committed to ensuring that everyone - regardless of where they live - has access to safe transportation," said Secretary Foxx. "These new funds will help improve the safety of roads in Indian Country for everyone who depends on them and will improve the quality of life for the tribal communities they serve."

The funds will be used for safety planning, engineering improvements, enforcement and emergency services, and education for tribal communities. This is the first year such funds have been awarded since the program's creation in the Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act (MAP-21).  FHWA received 240 applications requesting a total of $27.2 million in assistance.

Congress created the program under MAP-21 to improve highway safety on tribal roads and other transportation facilities - statistically, some of the most hazardous in the nation because of poor physical condition.

Recipients in the Southern Plains TTAP region include: Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes, Delaware Nation, Kiowa Tribe, Kaw Nation, Otoe-Missouria Tribe, Ponca Tribe, Citizen Potawatomi Nation, Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma, Kickapoo Tribe of Oklahoma, Sac and Fox Nation of Oklahoma, Eastern Shawnee Tribe, Wyandotte Nation, Miami Tribe, Peoria Tribe, Muscogee (Creek) Nation, Pawnee Nation, Absentee-Shawnee Tribe, Osage Tribe, Kialegee Tribal Town, Cherokee Nation, Seminole Nation, and Kickapoo Traditional Tribe of Texas.

Intersection & Interchange Geometrics: Safer, Faster, Cheaper!
EDC 2 - Half-Day Webinar on Dec. 4
1 pm to 3 pm at CLGT in Stillwater, OK

Every Day Counts
Nearly half of all severe roadway crashes in the U.S. are intersection related. As part of the safety focus area of the Every Day Counts (EDC) initiative, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) is promoting several proven techniques to improve the safety of intersections: roundabouts, displaced left-turn intersections, restricted crossing U-turn intersections, median U-turn intersections, and the diverging diamond interchange. Transportation agencies that apply these innovative intersections and interchanges can not only reduce crashes, but greatly enhance efficiency for moving traffic, often with substantial cost savings and accelerated project delivery.

This EDC Exchange will present information on these innovative intersections and interchanges and how they can help you to improve safety and mobility for all users at intersections in your jurisdictions. The Exchange will expand upon presentations and discussions that were conducted during the 2013 Spring Virtual Summit by offering a more in-depth look at how these innovations are applicable to local and Tribal transportation agencies. The Exchange will feature presentations from local agencies describing how they were able to implement these innovative designs to solve some challenging intersection problems.
