Tribal Transportation Safety Funds NOFA opens

Application details outlined with new option

For all who may be interested in applying for Tribal Transportation Safety Funds (TTPSF), another application option is available besides Grants.gov, although the grant opportunity is posted at http://www.grants.gov/web/grants/search-grants.html (search under CFDA # 20.205). This also means that the applicant does NOT have to register through SAM.gov. Instead, applications can be sent directly to FHWA at ttpsf@dot.gov.

The grant solicitation period has opened. The deadline for application submissions is September 19th.  Federal Lands Highway has updated their website to include all the information needed to apply. Please note that the NOFA does direct applicants to use Grants.gov; please disregard the NOFA instructions that tell you to submit only through Grants.gov. Instead, you will send your application, which includes an SF-424, a narrative as the attachment, along with any supporting documentation directly to Federal Highway Administration at ttpsf@dot.gov .

Details for the application process can also be found on the website: http://flh.fhwa.dot.gov/programs/ttp/safety/ttpsf-2013.htm. A webinar outlining the process will be posted at https://connectdot.connectsolutions.com/p702edmb975/?launcher=false&fcsContent=true&pbMode=normal

Please contact Russell Garcia, TTP Bridge and Safety Program Manager, FHWA, if you have any questions.

Developing Tribal Transportation Safety Plans

Webinar Announcement

August 14 and August 29, 2013 at 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm CST

Instructor:  Adam Larsen, FHWA

Webinar Description:

Tribal Transportation Safety Plans are a critical first step for developing a strategic approach to transportation safety risks. This training will be an overview of a recommended process for developing TTSP.

MAP-21 sets aside 2% of the Tribal Transportation Program (TTP) as TTP Safety Funds (TTPSF) to be made available to tribes on a competitive basis.  The funds will be distributed to tribes to develop strategic plans and implement multi-disciplinary strategies that are most likely to reduce the number of fatal and serious injury crashes that are occurring in Indian Country.   The top priority during the first cycle of funding will be funding the development of Tribal Transportation Safety Plans. The training will also cover key elements for Tribes to consider when applying for TTPSF dollars to develop a Tribal Transportation Safety Plan.

A Tribal Transportation Safety Plan:

  • is a living document
  • is data driven
  • identifies transportation safety issues
  • prioritizes strategies to address the top issues
  • is coordinated with the State Strategic Highway Safety Plan and any local government safety plans
  • and, promotes a comprehensive, strategic approach to addressing safety needs with input from a variety of stakeholders

Registration for this event is required.  This webinar is limited to 99 connections.

Registration is full for the August 14 session. To register for the August 29th session, please visit this link: http://goo.gl/mvbAb7  t

US 34 Bridge Replacement of Republican Creek in Wray
US 34 Bridge Replacement of Republican Creek bridge in Wray, Colorado
Innovation of the month
Every Day Counts - FHWA initiative

In August, the Every Day Counts spotlight is on accelerated bridge construction, technologies and practices that enable highway agencies to replace bridges faster, more safely, and sometimes at a lower cost. Every Day Counts is focusing on three ABC technologies: slide-in bridge construction, prefabricated bridge elements and systems, and geosynthetic reinforced soil integrated bridge systems.

Slide-in bridge construction involves building a bridge on temporary supports next to an existing structure and sliding it into place after the old bridge is removed. The bridge is installed and the road reopened to traffic in a short time-typically 48 to 72 hours-reducing traffic disruption and improving safety.

The Colorado Department of Transportation will offer a series of training webinars on lateral bridge slides from October 2013 to December 2014. Dates on those webinars are coming soon.

Mark your calendar for the next EDC Exchange
Locally Administered Federal-Aid Projects: What's in it for you?
September 24, 1:00 pm Central Time in Stillwater, OK

As a key transportation stakeholder in the State of Oklahoma, the Federal Highway Administration's Oklahoma Division (FHWA) invites you to attend the "Locally Administered Federal-Aid Projects" Every Day Counts (EDC) Exchange. The Exchange takes place on Tuesday, September 24, 2013 from 1:00 to 3:30 pm Central Standard Time via a live nationwide interactive video conference at the Center for Local Government Technology in Stillwater, Oklahoma.

The second round of EDC introduced a three-pronged strategy to aid local public agencies (LPAs) through the complexities of delivering and administering Federal-aid projects.

The strategy focuses on:  Stakeholder Partnering (ensuring effective communication), Certification Programs (ensuring technical capabilities to manage projects) and Consultant Services Flexibilities (improving the quality and performance of contracted services.  The session will highlight examples that demonstrate the successful use of these LPA initiatives.

In order to ensure adequate accommodations, we ask that you RSVP by September 16th by email to Jim Stevenson at FHWA at  James.R.Stevenson@dot.gov .  Also, feel free to call Mr. Stevenson at 405-254-3300 with questions or to discuss this program.
